Is the Philips Lumea worth the money?

And if so, which model?

I have dark hair so assume it’s suitable?

Thanks in advance

Also going against the grain, I would have to say I’m really disappointed. No difference at all to face/chin/neck. Armpits still have hair but it’s a bit more sparse. Nothing like the claims in the marketing material. I have dark hair on pale skin and always use the Lumea on maximum setting.

If you do go for it, I would say to get the cordless model. I got the corded, and it’s a right pain to have to get out an extension lead to use it in front of a mirror in good light...

EileenGC · 27/08/2021 06:02

I have the Lumea Advanced (corded) and it has done a great job on my face.

Stomach and armpits are also noticeably better but I’m still shaving regularly.

Legs - impossible mission, I stuck with the twice-monthly treatment for 5-6 months, I noticed a bit of reduction but nothing close to having to stop shaving every day. It also gave me terrible rashes on both upper and lower legs which became incompatible with wearing jeans or tights for any amount of time. However, I also have hirsutism so that may be way it wasn’t as effective.

Personally it was worth the money for the results achieved on my face. Definitely wouldn’t have spent extra on the Prestige, but we have plugs in the bathroom where I live so I’m not faffing around with extension leads all the time Grin

CherryMaple · 27/08/2021 06:21

@EileenGC You have plugs in the bathroom??? Shock

Greaterthanthesumoftheparts · 27/08/2021 06:50

@CherryMaple plugs in the bathroom is quite normal outside of the UK. I have 2 in mine, one with the light switch and the other in the mirrored cupboard above the sink. Very useful.

EileenGC · 27/08/2021 07:09

Yes, plugs in the bathroom are very common in the rest of Europe and everywhere in America/Asia I have visited. When I moved to the UK it was hard to adapt to drying and straightening my hair in my room, without mirrors (student house so no fancy dressing tables or money space for mirrors…). Eventually became an expert but my, are plugs useful in the bathroom!

I got atrocious acne from using it. Deep and painful cysts. Took months to clear. But I used too frequently so maybe that aggravated my poor skin.

Budsaway · 27/08/2021 23:02

Absolutely yes!

megletthesecond · 28/08/2021 08:49

Pale skin and dark hair here. It's taken 9 months and it's finally working. Nothing like as quick and pain-free as the ads would have you believe.
Lots of spots and itching during the first two months. I was sleeping with icy flannels on my legs to calm them down. I'm still on fortnightly treatments and shaving despite apparently being able to only zap them once a month.
30yrs of waxing probably gave me incredibly strong leg hairs, they weren't giving up without a fight.

Coronado2 · 28/08/2021 08:53

I always see people seeing how amazing it is, but for me it really wasn't and I regret buying it.

SnowyCactus · 28/08/2021 08:53

Yes yes absolutely!

I read a long thread on here called 'Lumea changed my life' after doing loads of research and took the plunge a few weeks ago.

I am only early 30s but have a VERY hairy face. Not sure what causes it really but I have to pluck every morning, approx 50 hairs at least. I've always struggled with shaving rash on my legs too and have tried everything over the years and basically given up.

I was convinced the Lumea wouldn't work for some reason, but after only the second treatment my face is near enough hair free which is genuinely life changing for me. Legs are about 70% hair free I'd say, and started growing back much thinner/weaker after the first session. I've just done my third and looking forward to seeing even more improvements.

It has been worth its weight in gold for me. It really has. I've not seen much change in my underarms but will persevere as it doesn't take long to do. Going to try my bikini line too next!

SnowyCactus · 28/08/2021 08:55

Forgot to say I got the most expensive version as DH ordered it as a gift but I would have been more than happy with the basic one. I never use the cordless function at all.

MissTrip82 · 28/08/2021 09:04

It was worth it for me.

Very pale skin, very dark hair. Basically designed for me!

lifehappened · 28/08/2021 09:05

Everywhere apart from armpits has worked great

CherryMaple · 28/08/2021 21:34

It would be interesting to know if all the people who have been disappointed have got the corded model. Is it meant to be less powerful?

Noapplejustcrumble · 28/08/2021 21:40

I've got the corded prestige, just use it on my bikini line. Been using it fortnightly for about 6 months now and it is only just making a difference. Hair much sparser now. Not sure how long I should be using it fortnightly for though.

Workinghardeveryday · 29/08/2021 01:27

I got one for Christmas, I really wanted one as have to shave my legs every day.
Read the instructions and said something to the effect if you are immune system was compromised you couldn’t use it. Gutted.
Has anyone used it and been okay if on meds that effect immune system? Sometimes I think I will just do it! Then chicken out and think it might burn me or something!!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/08/2021 07:44

My friend is on immunosuppressants and uses it with no problems. Don't think she knew about that! Worked really well for her.

Workinghardeveryday · 29/08/2021 10:01

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor thank you! I am going to try it out this week when my fake tan wears off 😊

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/08/2021 11:46

Perhaps just try a patch first and see?

Workinghardeveryday · 29/08/2021 13:56

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor I did when I first got it, went up my leg and zapped once on each level and was fine, just worry I will do it and come out in burns the next day, can that happen?

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 29/08/2021 14:38

I have no idea ShockGrin

PenguNoodle · 01/09/2021 17:35

Which model have you bought?

I was looking at the Philips Lumea Prestige BRI947. Is this any good?

BippityBoppity87 · 02/09/2021 23:21

I have the Philips Lumea Prestige. It has worked brilliantly on my legs and armpits. Hardly any hair there now. Hasn't done so well on my face. Particularly upper lip and neck, and I have pale skin and dark hair. Maybe takes a bit longer on the face? Not really sure. Have been using it for about 3 months now

torquewench · 03/09/2021 06:37

Mine was cordless as well as useless
Ninkanink · 03/09/2021 06:43

Definitely worth it. I have the prestige, but I use it plugged in because it’s faster that way.

I have almost no regrowth. Usually do a maintenance run every few months.

Make sure you charge/use it every couple of months or the battery will die completely which is a very expensive mistake to make!
