Please convince me to keep this coat....

Got it yesterday as a birthday present from dh, here, but I really don't think I like it.... I love the colour (it's the blue one) and the fabric is gorgeous but it's so shapeless.... When I put it on I feel like a sack of potatoes, specially if I button it up. But dh always tries so hard to get something I really like.... he even looked for my swatches from my colour analysis to see if the colour is ok, that I feel so bad to change it. I managed to say that I thought it was shapeless and did nothing for me, but he said change it if you want but I think it looks really good on you... We just have opposite tastes, we never like the same things .

Someone tell me it is nice and I should keep it?

And also, who (what shape) is it flattering for?

tugamommy, am going through the same dilemma. It is a gorgeous coat but worry too about the shapelessness aspect. A friend thought it looked good and said it's just the style - she also told me to make sure I stood up properly! I think you just have to get used to the 'swing' aspect of it. I agree a belt probably wouldn't work due to the lovely detailing at the back. Maybe you need to try it on with various combos of boot/shoes/trousers. I'll try it on again in a day or so and make a decision then.

It's tough isn't it, having such problems

LaCerbiatta · 30/11/2007 13:07

Thanks ninedragons, that's a good plan.... except that he saw me wearing it and still likes it.

I don't understand... he always wants me to buy shaped belted coats, I don't understand how he can like this one....

I'm a looooot better but I've alsways been very insecure about myself and what clothes suit me and I still don't have the assertiveness to say: no, that shape is wrong for me, it is not flattering.

I really hate myself for feeling so down because of such a silly thing...

What about taking it to an alterations shop and asking if they could give it a bit more of a waist? That might work well (though of course you couldn't then send it back after that, if it didn't)

zeebee · 30/11/2007 14:20

Just read the thread properl.Sorry tgm, didn't mean to sound flippant at the end of my post as see now you have more than one dilemma, so that probably didn't come across as terribly tactful. It's certainly a tough one.

Maybe keep trying it on and go with it? It's hard to describe the style as it looks a lot 'straighter' in the pics. The sale starts in a couple of weeks, I wonder if it will be massively reduced, perhaps hinting that others have the same problem?

brimfull · 30/11/2007 14:29

I would say you need to be quite tallish and not have big norks for that coat to look good.

Love the coat but know it would look like a sack on me.

TracyK · 30/11/2007 14:31

Just don't button it up - it's not that cold in this country to need it done up anyway. Just wear scarf, boots and tights.

LaCerbiatta · 30/11/2007 14:33

Oh no, you didn't sound flippant at all.

I KNOW I'm an idiot and let the most stupid things get me down like this. I have either a nice, expensive, coat or a £125 Boden voucher! I just have to see it in that prespective!
I'm actually starting to feel quite embarassed by this thread...

So zeebee, have you ordered the same coat? Which colour? I don't dislike it as much open but I'm not mad on having the silly pattern of the lining on show...

OP posts:
LaCerbiatta · 30/11/2007 14:44

Really ggirl? I was hoping that someone would say that it really suits someone with big norks or something like that... someone unlike me. I am not short (5,6) and have small norks (34B) and it sure doesn't suit me. When it's buttoned up I feel like I'm wearing this: what children in Portugal wear in the nursery to keep their clothes clean!

That's why you need the sexy boots

SilentTerror · 30/11/2007 17:05

I bought that coat with the Preview discount when it first came out,but the shape was awful, much to flared and from the wrong point, sort of on the bust not under or even above.
I sent it back, but think a size smaller may have worked....

inSanityClaus · 30/11/2007 20:14

Maybe change it for the Vlevet Going Out Coat from Boden? He might not even notice ...

LaCerbiatta · 02/12/2007 11:02

Decided to keep the coat.... Tried it on with a short skirt (so that only boots and tights show) and with jeans tucked inside boots and it was almost ok. Not great, won't wear it more than a couple of times, but the fact that dh threw away the invoice for changing it sort of made the decision for me.

Interestingly I saw a woman wearing one yesterday and she looked fine, she was a lot bigger than me and was probably wearing a small size. Because I have broad shoulders I can't go any smaller or I won't be able to move my arms. I suppose it's a coat that, unbottened, can be flattering for the larger size...

So, I was just going to post that I've decided to keep mine (grey).............but I'm not large of size!! I'm a bit of a short arse though fairly large norked! I've got the size 8 and is a roomy fit.

Decided I liked it, though does look better undone. Had it's first outing this afternoon, to a kid's party, and I got 3 compliments and all from poeple who are pretty stylish.
I did think I'd see loads of them worn around here but haven't which is a bit odd. Maybe they will be bargain basement in the sale. Try to enjoy wearing it tugamommy and let us know if you get compliments.

maximummummy · 03/12/2007 01:04

oh i think that's a lovely coat and what a great dh for buying you it
but i have to admit i'm a right ungratefull cow and exchaged a fatface hoodie my dp bought me last xmas
there's no point keeping something so expensive if you don't lurve it

LaCerbiatta · 03/12/2007 11:02

Clara, dh threw away everything not realising you would need it for an exchange, he's never ordered clothes online before and never sent anything back. He wasn't being presumptuous at all .

zeebee, maybe it's the large norks that do the trick! You're tiny if you've got a size 8!
