DMs for a 17yo girl?

Notebooksarefabulous · 16/08/2021 20:41

Quick question I hope

DMs - a stylish choice for a 17yo girl off to college or no? If not then what?
Must be durable and suitable for wearing all day everyday. Shes got trainers but Im thinking that a pair of trendy boots would be a nice extra for a 17yo not into fashion but not wanting to look fuddy duddy. Help appreciated!

Dd's 20 and has lived in DMs or Converse for years, she has loads of pairs.

llmk · 18/08/2021 12:44

She is 17, what does she want?

Notebooksarefabulous · 18/08/2021 13:10

llmk - She like me has no idea what is currently in and what isnt, hence asking here. Ive been wearing DMs on occasion since the 90s but Ive no idea if they are "in" for young people. She needs durable footwear due to walking a lot each day. Dms fit the bill - I just wanted to check they were considered ok by teens still.

They're in with Dd who couldn't give a shit what anyone else thinks!

LarsErickssong · 18/08/2021 13:39

I wouldn't say they are 'in' for young people in general. The vast majority of people wouldn't wear them but for people with a more alternative style they are still very popular. I've been wearing them since I was a teen and so have most of my friends but at school we were the 'Indie kids' not popular kids.

LarsErickssong · 18/08/2021 13:40

Sorry to answer your question a bit better I would say there will be other girls wearing them but probably not that many, trainers are still very much the most popular shoe but if she doesn't care what people think then she should wear docs!

RedHairAndAHandMeDownRobe · 18/08/2021 13:41

I recently brought a pair and think they are timeless. At the moment everyone is wearing them with dresses. I like them in the winter with thick tights and dresses.

nicky2512 · 18/08/2021 13:42

My Dd (19) has a pair of the pull on type ones. They are burgundy and vegan - were a bargain in their sale round this time last year.
She can’t be bothered with laces! Got them as she needed something sensible. She has so many shoes and boots but they are mostly more decorative than functional!

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 18/08/2021 13:54

My dd 15 has got 2 pairs.

Bagelsandbrie · 18/08/2021 14:10

Dd aged 18 has two pairs- white and black ones. But they need a lot of breaking in, she won’t be able to get them and wear them all day straight away!

isthismylifenow · 18/08/2021 14:25

They are absolutely very in for teens where I live.

My dd has 3 pairs of 4160's in different colours. It's the style she prefers. The patent leather seem to take a bit longer to break in.

The pascal are soft and are usually wearable all day from the get go.

SymbollocksInteractionism · 18/08/2021 17:15

My DD (14) has a couple of pairs. She also wears converse.

liveforsummer · 18/08/2021 17:19

DM's span the ages. My super cool 8 year old has a pair for her school shoes this year. A good few of DD's friend in high school have them for their school shoes. The teachers/school staff I work with ranging from young and trendy to older and more conservative wear them (the latter often the Chelsea boot style rather than eyelet boot) so I'd say yes, they are a fashionable and comfortable choice

SionnachRua · 18/08/2021 17:22

Is she on social media? If so, have a look at what peers are posting and wearing. I like DMs myself but it's no good buying them if she doesn't have things to pair them with (I know they're only boots but if she's not into fashion, a bit of outfit planning could be helpful).

SionnachRua · 18/08/2021 17:24

Tbh I'd say a pair of trainers in a different colour/style to what she has could be just as versatile. Particularly if she's not too into the idea of DMs themselves - trainers are definitely in. And the trainers are more likely to be comfy from the get go Grin

overthethamesfromyou · 18/08/2021 17:25

Let her have a look in the first two weeks of college and then decide?

Three0fivepointfour · 18/08/2021 17:30

DMs are timeless and great for inclement weather. They take ages to break in though and I think always look better with a a bit of age to them. I like the pull on style but they don’t suit my high arch. I need a lace up.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 18/08/2021 19:52

The shoes are absolutely standard for girls at secondary schools. But buy plenty of 5x3 inch wound dressings and get her to put them on in advance, as they still cause evil blisters until they're broken in.

Livinthedream84 · 18/08/2021 20:02

my 14 year old has a couple of pairs and her friends wear them. Im a teacher and ive seen 6th formers wearing them. Using classics in black

Notebooksarefabulous · 18/08/2021 20:46

Thankyou so much all, this is all so helpful. They arent cheap of course (even 2nd hand!) so you've all helped me to know it will be worth the spend.

For reasons I wont go into here we are both of us totally clueless about what is in and what isnt - the mn voice really helps!

I have the fur lined DMs, they are so comfortable, no issues needing to break them in and they keep my feet warm.

AtPanAtPan · 18/08/2021 20:55

@notebooksarefabulous I agree they’re timeless and are very versatile. Came here to say they can be difficult to break in if you get the standard DM shoe. I got 1460 Pascal Virginias - upper is softer and already worn in essentially. DM store assistant gave me the recommendation and they were comfy from first wear
