New Doc Martins

My husband bought me a beautiful pair of doc Martin's for my birthday.

However I am finding them quite uncomfortable. My question is do they take a bit of time to be broken in?
Thanks

My DM’s rubbed huge blisters into my heel for a couple of week. It was agony after the first day but, once they were worn in, they were beautifully comfortable.
I remember putting padded plasters on the inside heel of my DM’s for a while until they stopped rubbing.

Yes, they are notorious for it, but they will break in after a few wears and become the most comfortable thing you’ve ever worn.

madamecake · 16/08/2021 15:25

They definitely take a couple of weeks to wear in, but I have few pairs and can honestly say they are most comfortable footwear I own!

I wear them around the house with a couple of paid of thick socks at first, and use lots of their wonder balsam to keep the leather supple too.

StarfishDish · 16/08/2021 15:40

Apparently if you gently hammer inside the boot where they rub, it softens them Smile

Bagelsandbrie · 16/08/2021 15:45

Yep they will take months to wear in.

Compeed blister plasters, lots of socks, wear them for short periods at first.

Ah thanks ladies! As I suspected and probably because they're leather I need to grin and bear them until they wear in a bit x

Ahhh they are lovely op. But probably do need to be broken in and softened with a bit of your blood first Grin Once they are, they'll be the comfiest things ever. Two pairs of socks (I always wear two pairs of thin socks with docs, even fully broken in ones, blister plasters, maybe vaseline and I've also bashed the back of mine with a hammer!

Badabingbadabum · 16/08/2021 16:06

Has anyone tried doc socks? I heard about them on here I think, they are padded for docs. I have a pair which are over 20 years old that I have never managed to break in.

Another tip I’ve heard of was to spray deodorant on the inside where they rub, no idea if it works though but cheapest & easiest option to try I suppose.

Chocolatecoatedkettlebell · 16/08/2021 17:00

As above, preventative bluster plasters for a while. I also found that thick tights worked better than socks for reducing friction.

Cautionary tale: Having worn them many times before, I left the house in mine and knew within 100m that my socks were not providing the necessary comfort/protection but I persevered. I probably only walked 1-2miles but ended up with blisters that got infected and gave me cellulitis. This has not stopped me from wearing them, the moral of the story is to turn back and change socks if you feel them rubbing.

I swear by Doc-Socks They work for me - and you can avoid paying the blood and blister sacrifice!

There are some silicone things you can buy off Amazon, a bit like like an ankle sock but it ends in the middle of your foot.

Elsajk · 16/08/2021 19:39

@mrswishywashy1 thank you for the recommendation. Smile

DM do a thing called Wonder Balsam which is a bit like the “dubbin” my dad used to put on new golf shoes. The sales assistant told me to rub in loads of it, then put the boots under a (on) radiator for a few days. Apparently the heat helps it absorb to soften the leather.

I did balsam/wear round the house/balsam/house for a couple of weeks before wearing mine out.

murasaki · 17/08/2021 11:48

My dad used to rub a bar of soap on the inside of my teenage docs. I tried it last year with a new pair and it still helps.

murasaki · 17/08/2021 11:49

Also, the docs are now made in China, try Solivair who now use the original doc factory, the quality is much better.
