What hair home dye would you recommend?

Hi,

Looking for some advice. I started going grey when I was 19 years old and since have always has to use home hair dyes. Six weeks ago I decided to go to the hairdressers and get my hair done professionally thinking that maybe the Greys wouldn't be seen as quick.
Anyways literally after a week the Greys started coming through again.
It cost me £100 at the hairdressers and obviously if I'm doing that monthly I can't afford it so home hair dyes is probably the way forward.
I normally use and nice and easy but recently I feel like it's not working as good I'm not sure if they have changed the chemicals in it.
Can anybody recommend a home hair dye that they use which works quite well? I am a medium brown xx

Have you not thought of just saving your money and letting the grey grow out ?
Grey hair is lovely, regardless of age. People pay good money to have it dyed grey Smile

HonMayo · 15/08/2021 15:35

I use Olia.

smith5715 · 15/08/2021 15:41

I'm in a similar boat!
Can't afford the upkeep of salon dying - I used to use nice and easy on my roots which covered the grey but the last 2 times, the dye seemed much darker and it didn't look great - I also assumed they've changed the formula.

I tried a schwarzkopf dye in an ash brown (to try and avoid it looking too dark/red tones) - the colour is great but greys appeared almost instantly so i wouldn't recommend that brand.
I'm still on the lookout for another dye!

I would never go grey naturally - sod that, it’s just not me. I used to have it done by my hairdresser but lockdown stopped that so I have been doing it myself ever since. Got quite good through practice, and YouTube videos! I use Garner Nutrisse now after trying many different ones. It works well for my hair and hides the grey well (I was dark brown originally, but dye it various shades of red or blonde)

courtney251 · 15/08/2021 15:52

@Neveranynamesleft I'm only 30 so I don't think I'm really ready to go grey yet lol maybe when I'm 50 I will. X

I also use olia, the coverage is very good (I've got dark brown hair but always go deep red) and have a few greys and it always covers them brilliantly. Also it smells lovely too - kind of fruity smell - not the usual bleach/peroxide/ammonia smell, and my hair feels lovely when done Smile

Passmealargewine · 15/08/2021 16:04

I also started going grey really young & did use nice & easy at first but started finding it didn't work as well. I put it down to me getting greyer or them becoming more stubborn.
Like a couple of others have said, I use olia too or lloreal preference (depends which have a deal on) both are good

TheWholeWorld · 15/08/2021 16:05

From a recommendation on here I recently dyed mine with wella koleston. I had to buy 2 different colours to get the right grey coverage but it looks really good. More expensive than box dye (probably 3x the price with buying developer as well) but I think the finish is really good.

Ilikecakes · 15/08/2021 16:06

Josh Wood - quite a bit more expensive than the others mentioned, but I tend to buy a few when they’re on three-for-two at Boots and stockpile. Nice colour and the shade shots help eliminate my pet hate: the orange tinge that always emerges on my hair 3-4 weeks after the dye job!

Coffeeandcake36 · 15/08/2021 16:29

Good thread op. I'm trying to combat the greys myself in my experience garnier nutrisse doesn't cover well,my greys would be showing again after 2 weeks but may work well in other people's hair. I'll be trying the other brands suggested.

Inthesameboatatmo · 15/08/2021 16:35

I'm the same as you OP.
Have you thought about a root touch up powder ,temporary but does the job.
I get mine from Amazon .

Inthesameboatatmo · 15/08/2021 16:36

But also it depends how quickly your hair grows so if completely grey you will get regrowth after a week starting to show .

Parker231 · 15/08/2021 16:38

I recommend eSalon. High quality and only £25. Nearest match to the products used as the hairdressers.

Noshowwithoutpunch · 15/08/2021 16:39

I used to dye my hair at home.
The only one that would cover my grey's was a Live colour brown one ( urban brown ?).

BillieSpain · 15/08/2021 16:40

Olia here too. Better thann the hairdresser. No amonia. I'm light blonde.

+1 for esalon although I don't have grey, so entirely helpful. I can say it's easy to use, doesn't smell as bad as most box dyes and it left my hair in good condition Smile

  • NOT entirely helpful Confused
Onlyagirl · 15/08/2021 16:52

Esalon, even my ( very expensive) hairdresser is impressed with it.

thesunwillout · 15/08/2021 16:54

Belle colour by Garnier.

No 6 here!

Morrisons, Wilkos

Makemedoit · 15/08/2021 17:24

I have to dye mine weekly to stop the regrowth showing and the hairdresser doing it makes no difference as my hair is quite fast growing. So I have accepted the fact and just add hair dye to my weekly shopping. I used Nice and Easy for a number of years but have switched to Garnier Nutrisse in the last year which seems to work well on my hair. I can usually get 2 boxes for £9 in Tesco, Superdrug etc and would be open to trying other brands if at a good price. I have tried the sprays and powders to hide the grey along my parting and hairline but they are only temporary and the colour does come off on hands / pillows so I would rather just dye it now.

ICouldHaveCheckedFirst · 15/08/2021 17:32

Have you tried Superdrug's own brand, Colour Effects?
It's a wash in, wash out type. Dead simple, basically just a shampoo. Cheap too, and a bottle, though small, lasts me several goes as I only use it twice a week.
I'm not sure how well it covers if you have a lot of grey, but it won't cost you much to find out.

Mumdiva99 · 15/08/2021 18:33

I use Nutrisse (the one Davina advertises)....for a while before lockdown I was using Josh Wood....which is a bit more expensive. Boots did a few good deals but I haven't seen any since so back to the cheaper one.

MancMum2000 · 15/08/2021 20:52

Can I ask about the shade shot - is it the Smokey brunette you use? Wondering if I should try this as mine goes brassy too and need something gentle to get back to ash brown. It’s expensive but hopefully you get more than 1 application and it lasts a few washes? Thanks!
Ilikecakes · 15/08/2021 22:11

It was actually the icy blonde I used. Would never have chosen it myself but I used their online chat tool, which I’d really recommend, where they asked me what I wanted to achieve, looked at a photo I uploaded and advised accordingly.

I went off piste next time and used the smokey brunette one as it was all Boots had in stock and I didn’t find it lasted as long before fading 🤷🏻‍♀️
