Day bag for short city breaks?

Errno · 15/08/2021 00:02

Can anyone recommend a good bag for two day city breaks that usually involve lots of walking? It needs to be big enough to hold a book, water bottle, change of clothes and a bit extra.
I have a North Face Borealis that I’ve been using but it’s quite bulky and uncomfortable (I’m quite short) and I also feel too much like a tourist! Not sure if I want another rucksack or more of a crossover bag or if a mix of both might work. Ideally not leather. Or too shiny.

The small longchamp backpack would fit this bill. Lighweight and comfy!

bookish83 · 15/08/2021 06:56

Actually clothes might be a squeeze depending on how much you want to fit in!

SpeckledyHen · 15/08/2021 08:20

I always use a Longchamp Le Pliage shoulder bag to cart my stuff around on city breaks . Light , comfortable and secure top zip .
The Lonchamp back- pack is fine for a few items too , but not big enough for a change of clothes .

Longchamp backpack is good - if clothing is something like leggings and T shirt you may just about be able to squeeze them in with a book, water bottle, phone and purse.

Kipling have a lot of different styles

e.g. www.kipling.com/uk-en/backpacks-c10565/seoul-blue-jeans-ki6363l1800-999.html

Thanks for the suggestions.
I have quite narrow shoulders and bags constantly slip off therefore a bag that is a crossover would probably be better than a shoulder bag but with the option of turning into a backpack when it gets too heavy. Can’t seem to find anything that fits the bill.

Never seen these before but could fit the bill for your narrow shoulders?

DesperateForSun · 15/08/2021 20:26

This is very roomy and completely water proof.

Do you mean you want to be able to carry everything with you that you need for the two days? Just a bit confused as you mention a change of clothes, but not toiletries.

JohnNutLips · 15/08/2021 20:29

I have a tote pack from Fjallraven which has long shoulder straps and turns into a back pack. www.fjallraven.com/uk/en-gb/bags-gear/backpacks-bags/shoulder-bags/totepack-no-1?v=F24203%3a%3a7323450451455
Back pack isn’t the comfiest ever but I find it really useful for travelling for work. I usually have a mini cross body bag as well to keep purse and phone to hand.

cherrypiepie · 15/08/2021 20:39

@DietrichandDiMaggio I was wondering that too!

Errno · 15/08/2021 21:08

Thanks for the Eastpak and Fjalltaven links.

@DesperateForSun Thanks for your link. I had trouble opening it. Are you able to try again.

@DietrichandDiMaggio & @cherrypiepie I travel very light in terms of toiletries; along the lines of tiny hotel size shower gel & shampoo bottles, a small tube of face moisturiser and a deodorant - that’s about it Blush

Try Madlug. They gift a bag with every purchase to a child leaving care too so lovely company.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 31/08/2021 17:41

I've got a Sweaty Betty rucksack. It's big enough for a couple of outfits plus Kindle and makeup bag. I just wish it had more pockets. Kipling backpacks are better ime. My daughter always uses a Longchamp tote.

MarigoldGloves · 31/08/2021 17:50

Try Crumpler

Loads of options but something like this?

Depends on what you are looking for style wise and how much you are intending to carry clothes wise for how long.

I've found the combination of a smallish cross body bag with a folding backpack can be rather handy. Just open up the backpack when you need to carry to clothes (or chuck everyones stuff into a cloakroom at a museum) but small bag the rest of the time

If you're cross body the Kipling bags are about as light as you can get which is best for carrying stuff cross body. I could get a change if clothes in most of the medium sized ones. If you are happy carrying your bottle in the bulk of the bag a cheap knock off does the job well enough, otherwise the Kiplings with the bottle holder on the outside are remarkably handy. The soeal backpacks mentioned above are incredibly capacious but a little floppy, they don't really hold there shape and dont have anything to cinch them down flat. But you can carry more in them comfortably because they are, backpack and cross body, both comfortable and so very light

The Fjallraven's you can make more comfortable if you get the shoulder pads. By careful on size as some sizes the side pockets on the straight backpacks dont actually fit a water bottle (I tried a lot of waterbottles). They are remarkably hardy bags.

Caramellatteplease · 31/08/2021 18:35

Also the cheapo Fjallravens you get on Ebay do seem to be genuine. If they aren't they are so close there is literally no perceptible difference in quality, material or branding.

Also if you are intending of travelling easyjet soon the large Fjallravens, large size Kipling seoul and some of the kipling totes are about the largest capacity bags that still fit the new cabin luggage size. Surprisingly few bags fit so precisely.

How about a Roka backpack. Lots of styles and colours. I have one and so does my DD. She is very slim and fussy about straps falling off.

Thanks for all the replies. I still haven’t got one so will be looking at all your suggestions.

Caramellatteplease a cross body & fold up rucksack is a good option.

Bottle holder is definitely a must as I’ve had too many leakagesSmile

The Longchamp Le Pliage Neo has a crossbody strap.
