I need a new handbag but feel very out of touch. At the same time I want to like my new bag rather than just following fashions. I'm nearly 40, and its just a bag for pottering around the shops, visiting friends etc and I work from home so it doesn't need to be fancy at all and not high fashion else it'd look ridiculous on me.
I'm not really sure what my style is. I had a quick look at bags and quite like the look of this one www.next.ie/en/style/st390496/648630#648630
What do you all think, and can you make any suggestions please?
How did I get to the point where I don't know myself enough to buy a handbag without it being a big deal?!!
Thank you

It’s not very practical - that style is hard to keep on your shoulder. It’s more of a work bag.

There are lots of smart but practical cross body bags

ttcsucks · 14/08/2021 21:23

It's ok - check out a brand called Polene they do high quality leather ones that won't break the bank

CommanderBurnham · 14/08/2021 21:25

That's a lovely bag, but probably too formal for everyday non work days. Fossil are a good shout for everyday good quality casual bags.

ttcsucks · 14/08/2021 21:27

And check out coach too - especially if you live near an outlet store you can pick up a bargain

Row1n · 14/08/2021 21:29

This is how badly I need help! What sort of style would you recommend for day to day?

Personally I do cross body bags for day to day - unless you need to fit a laptop in for work in which case a tote

thirstyformore · 14/08/2021 21:57

I was about to say Fossil, but been beaten to it! Great for good quality, reasonably priced every day bags.

I'm also a fan of coach.

Row1n · 14/08/2021 22:34

Thanks @CommanderBurnham thats a good style.

And to all the other suggestions too, I look forward to a lazy Sunday looking at bags!

This is a lovely everyday bag, I have it in 2 colours, just the right size, it actually fits a lot, and great quality.

Have a look at Megan and Bee especially if you're thinking about cross body bag.

Polene are lovely, but whilst not ridiculously expensive, are at least double the price of the one the OP linked to.

What is your budget?

AnneShirleysNewDress · 15/08/2021 00:39

Meg and Bee do lovely crossbody bags.

DietrichandDiMaggio · 15/08/2021 00:41

I have a few Coach bags, all bought in sales, so at least half price. Some of the bigger ones can feel quite heavy though.

I also have a couple of the Aurora Gigi bags - they are great when you don't need a big bag and are actually quite roomy.

allfurcoatnoknickers · 15/08/2021 00:43

My every day bag is an APC Demi-Lune. Fits more than you think.

If I need something bigger, I have a couple of plain leather totes. One from
Away and one from Mansur Gavriel. You can get nice ones in Zara though. You can find nice leather without it being too spendy.

If you’re unsure what you’re looking for OP then I suggest looking in person. Some really good advice from Anna Murphy here:

www.thetimes.co.uk/article/how-to-pick-a-handbag-the-arm-candy-guide-d9kbcgp7b

“One secret to getting it right is to test-drive it properly. Ideally always buy in person. Size first. Put the contents of your present handbag into a cotton dustbag and transplant wholesale into the bag you are thinking about in the shop. Does everything fit with enough room, but not too much room to spare? If yes, now you need to do a proper trial-carry.

Walk around with your putative purchase, sit down with it. Try it on over a heavy coat, as well as lighter garb. Is it good to carry? Or is it heavy or bulky? Or wrong in some other difficult to describe but ultimately love-affair-dooming way? Finally, do due diligence with any fastening. Make sure it’s properly functional. So many — unbelievably — aren’t. Of course, you can do all this at home if you buy online. You just have to be rigorous about sending it back if it doesn’t tick every single box.”
