Keratosis Pilaris (chicken skin)

Anybody successfully got rid of it, it’s so bad on my legs that they feel like sandpaper and the bumps are really visible, I’ve tried moisturisers that say they help (Ameliorate) but it did nothing. NHS website says don’t over exfoliate or use heavy perfumes creams. Body brushing or coffee grounds scrubs?? Any particular moisturiser?

I used Lidl foot cream but there's probably a reason you shouldn't. Smile

ThatIsQuiteACrane · 12/08/2021 12:38

Mine has disappeared during this pregnancy! Bit of an extreme solution though.

Didn't find much else to help, Ameliorate etc maybe faded it slightly but it didn't cure it. It's on my lower arms as well so really noticeable in most items of clothing. Sad

SusielouP · 12/08/2021 12:59

Thanks both, I’ve debated using foot cream for hard skin on feet so will give it a go, interesting re pregnancy as I have wondered if this was hormone related because it’s so extreme.

I used the flexitol dupe and after one application it had almost vanished.
Even the tops of my arms looked better.
It was so effective it made me worry about Sun exposure Grin for all three of the days my arms see the sun.

fitbciz1 · 12/08/2021 13:30

I think I've tried everything that has ever been suggested, and nothing has got rid of it. I've been using a glycolic acid scrub and lotion for the last few weeks, and it's looking better than it has for a long time though.

Also, shout out to the GP who told me it would be 'gone by the time I'm 30'. I'm now 49!

FizzyPink · 12/08/2021 13:33

I use the ordinary’s glycolic acid on mine and it’s honestly changed my life. Even after just a few applications my arms and calfs feel so much smoother

MrMeSeeks · 12/08/2021 13:37

At home laser

Mojitomogul · 12/08/2021 13:40

Agree about glycolic acid!! It really helps mine. Also really recommened Ceraves Smoothing cream SA, it comes in a big tub. It is absolutely brilliant and my arms have really terrible KP thats gone right down since using it. I exfoliate almost daily with the korean exfoliating towels, then apply that, then get the in the sun as much as possible, thats what works for me!

SusielouP · 12/08/2021 14:31

These are all great suggestions thank you so muchSmile it’s nice to at least have things to try!!

Oh god these threads always make me splurge on yet another wonder product that promises to eradicate my lifelong (49 yrs) kp but actually has minimal impact on it, if any.

....ok please tell me about home lasers, and I'm going to get some Cerave. Baaah.

NotMyCat · 12/08/2021 14:39

Soap and glory clean on me body wash and ameliorate cream shifted mine

ChardonnaysPetDragon · 12/08/2021 14:42

I have this huge bottle of glycolic acid toner, if I only use it on my face it might take years to finish, so I also use it on my arms for KP and feet. It really works there.

JesusMaryAndJosephAndTheWeeDon · 12/08/2021 14:53

A body lotion with urea in it will improve it. I use the Aldi copy of Eucerin.

SusielouP · 12/08/2021 15:15

I had been debating cerave so will give it a go and if it doesn't work I can try something else.

BruisedPear · 12/08/2021 15:15

I used a Turkish mit thing from Amazon to get rid of it immediately, the amount of dead skin that came off was amazing!
Now I use the glycolic acid from the ordinary in a fine mist spray bottle and regular body lotion to stop it coming back.

cosmopolitanplease · 12/08/2021 15:24

@BruisedPear could you link to the cloths you mentioned please? Did you have to soak in the bath first?

I bought these on the recommendation of another kp thread and they're next to useless.

Mcmcmcmc · 12/08/2021 16:30

I had KP since I was about 8 years old, and tried lots of things (lactic acid, salicylic acid, urea, exfoliation, moisturisers etc). Most of these things helped a bit when I used them consistently but did not get rid of it.

Earlier this year I developed a really severe itch all over most of my body (no rash, just an itch). It was so bad I could not sleep. Scratching with my nails didn’t alleviate it and got me covered in red marks, so I started using a body brush made for dry brushing, or (I know this sounds extreme) a nail brush to scratch my arms and legs, as this alleviated the itch better and did not scratch me. I was also moisturising after every shower with E45 cream (apparently dry skin is more likely to itch). Surprisingly, a week later the KP had completed disappeared - even the little red marks that resisted even the most effective treatments were GONE.

A few weeks later the itching stopped completely. I then found out I was pregnant but I doubt that pregnancy was the reason the KP went away - I’m pretty sure it was the strong exfoliation with dry brushes daily (plus moisturising).

This was over 6 months ago. I don’t dry brush every day anymore, just once a week. I still moisturise daily but with E45 cream only and not with any acids of urea. Still no sign of the KP coming back!

MoltonSilver · 12/08/2021 16:33

I used the highest strength flexitol on the back of my arms and it worked really well.

MoltonSilver · 12/08/2021 16:34

Mine went away with each pregnancy and came back about 6 months post partum. There's definitely a hormonal element.

BruisedPear · 12/08/2021 16:57

@cosmopolitanplease I used these ones you wet the mitt a little but no need to soak it.

Kelebek Kese -Turkish Hammam Bath Glove Skin Exfoliating Glove Spa Keses Mitt www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B071GK1LFK/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_glt_fabc_BXX1E5RWKHM0CBE9RPSR?psc=1&_encoding=UTF8&tag=mumsnetforu03-21

I tried the ones you posted but I didn’t find them any good either.
For me the mitt works best if you soak in the bath or have a hot shower then stand up or turn the shower off and make long sweeping motions over your skin. Don’t use a acid on the days you exfoliate with the mitt as it’ll sting just use regular body lotion.

thinkfast · 12/08/2021 17:05

Have you tried a Korean Italy towel? They hugely helped me with this issue.
