What bag or bags do you fly with?

As in, what do you have in terms of hand luggage? Do you just take your 'normal' size handbag, plus a bigger bag or small case to shove in the locker? Or one large handbag?

While on the subject of luggage - what cases do you recommend for checked luggage?

Totally depends on the trip. If just me I'll have a carry on suitcase for the overhead locker for my clothes etc, and a larger handbag, if it's a work trip usually Aspinal Marylebone or Mulberry Bayswater for laptop etc. If I'm with the kids it's a rucksack instead and a check in suitcase.

Sometimes also a small crossbody for passports and credit cards.

boomoperator · 12/08/2021 07:20

Medium sized suitcases which are checked in. I need new ones.

A Mia Tui Jennie for onboard. This is a big handbag. Plenty space for meds, passports, chargers, iPad, kindle etc etc.

Change of clothes in a rucksack for the three of us which also comes onboard.

Rucksack or handbag as my ‘hand item’ - depends on whether I’m travelling for work or not and need laptop, heavy books, kits… Or just purse and chargers IFYSWIM.

Carry on suitcase if included in the price or I added it on (eg easyJet and Ryanair have different requirements). I’ve been very happy with all my sets from Roncato - I have Modo Starlight 2.0 currently and I love them.

If work is paying for my ticket (I’m freelance so it’s not guaranteed) they’ll normally include checked in luggage, or with certain airlines I get it through loyalty schemes. Then I check in my biggest suitcase - or the carry on if a short trip - and have my rucksack/handbag on me.

The best thing about Covid where I live is that they automatically check in all suitcases for free now, it’s lovely to travel hands free at no extra price!

I take a cross body and a larger cabin bag for laptop, books, papers, etc. I'm looking for a leather version of the Mia Tui Jennie that a previous person mentioned- I like that style - in the region of £100-200. I'm going to look at Osprey now, as I quite like their bags

nicecheesegromit · 12/08/2021 07:30

Osprey London, that is

HeronLanyon · 12/08/2021 07:33

Reading with interest. My in flight at seat bag has NEVER been good.
If I ever do fly again I need to sort this. I need something which is secure whilst in airport, can stand on floor without falling over, has diffidently large opening to be able to see and get things needed easily and in dark, is not so deep that things have to be removed to get things at the bottom, will not take too much foot room, has useful small secure accessible document pockets
Keeping eye on this thread for ideas. Have never once got it right.

mdh2020 · 12/08/2021 07:41

A small cross body bag and a rucksack that fits under the seat in front. A medium size suitcase in the hold.

Kiitos · 12/08/2021 07:54

Depends entirely on the trip and the airline. Long haul I would check in a medium-sized suitcase (one of those hard on one side and soft on the other) and have a backpack as cabin baggage.

Short-haul I’d take a cabin-size hard case and a large handbag (Longchamp Le Pliage or similar).

Ryanair city break and all my packing would go into a single backpack that fits under the seat in front. Fjallraven Kanken is good for this kind of thing and might be worth a look @HeronLanyon - the boxy shape means it stands up and the zip opens to give access to all the contents.

CeeceeBloomingdale · 12/08/2021 07:59

It depends on the trip. I have a Fjallraven Kanken, several Longchamp Le Pliage. a couple of DAY ET Gweneth totes and various other totes. I tend to do a tote for a holiday with a small handbag that fits inside. For work I have a Kipling cabin case (minus the monkey, it's a really useful size and very lightweight).

HeronLanyon · 12/08/2021 08:01

kiitos that’s it exactly. Forgive me if you are on ones whose bag I have scrutinised during a flight as I scrabble about with my crap decision !

Kiitos · 12/08/2021 08:06

Haha no problem. There’s a reason why they’re so popular. You can fit much more in that you’d expect, plus they’re well-made, comfortable room carry and smart enough for a city break!

Kiitos · 12/08/2021 08:06

*comfortable TO carry

NeedWineNow · 12/08/2021 09:14

We only fly short haul holidays (Greece/Spain) so check in medium cases which are the make called IT and very lightweight. For the flight I carry a tote - my LV Neverfull style which has a large matching clutch which holds the passports - and DH has a small backpack both of which fit under seats.

When I travelled on a weekend break to Spain I went hand luggage only and took the large Kipling Art which went in the overhead locker together with a small Longchamp Pliage for passport, ticket, tablet which squashed in the top of the Art for boarding - I was travelling EasyJet who only allowed one bit of hand luggage - and took the Pliage out for the flight as I don't like leaving my passport etc in the locker.

Coogee · 12/08/2021 09:14

I generally use a Karrimor Hot Ice rucksack because it is useful at the destination. Sometimes I’ll borrow my husband’s Fjallraven duffel bag that secretly covet.

Checked luggage needs replacing and I’m looking for ideas. It needs wheels.

DelphineMarineaux · 12/08/2021 11:56

I travel with these bags from Reisenthel:

cdn.connox.com/m/100035/238027/media/reisenthel/Easyfitbag-Rucksack/reisenthel-easyfitbag-Rucksack-olive-Situation.jpg

They're lightweight, hold all of my things, and I can chuck them in the washing machine which is very important to me. I'm a bit of a germaphobe and like to be able to keep my things clean.

PeacheyPeach · 12/08/2021 14:46

Hi with the mau tui Jenni is this the allowed size for hand luggage?
That's the bit that stresses me out the most, that my bag is going to end up being to big and I have to leave it behind!!!
I never get my bag right. I've always got stuff spilling out of it and once I even ripped a bit handle seam because it couldn't handle the weight in the bag!!!

ShaunaTheSheep · 12/08/2021 14:58

Longchamp Pliage long handled shopper is versatile as hand bag and beach/day bag. I usually stuff a small crossbody bag inside for documents phone etc. , and for evening use.

Small soft wheeled case if hand luggage only, medium hard case for check in.

Or for airlines with teeny tiny bag sizes we have a couple of soft holdalls that can be squished when checked then stuffed with coat etc once on the plane.

gogohm · 12/08/2021 15:14

Usually just a large handbag, have a large bag for long haul (remember that?) I hate rolling cases

HeronLanyon · 12/08/2021 15:50

Great recommendations. Thanks.
