Hi can anyone help or have any advice? Since turning 40 my gums a shrinking at a rapid rate. I have some gum disease so have deep clean regularly, but it's not helping. My teeth and gums feel itchy all the time. My teeth were one of my best features and I'm so self conscious. My dentist doesnt seem to offer much help...

Are you using corsodol? It does stain with frequent use but should be fine for occasional use.
Your dentist doesn't sound that great. Is it nhs? I would urge anyone to go private. You really do get what you pay for. I don't think there's that much you can do though actually, other than veneers (expensive and painful)

blisstwins · 11/08/2021 17:24

Flossing. Water pick.

bettybigballs · 11/08/2021 17:38

I've had very similar, also with a rapid acceleration post 40! Mine is so bad i can't have a hygenist appt without full numbing. My dentist is brilliant and he's talking about treatments options later down the line but in the meantime the advise he's given me is use an extra soft manual toothbrush (as electric can exacerbate it), use a 45 degree angle to brush your teeth. Use teepees and also use durphat toothpaste. No idea if this is helping my my teeth are less sensitive...

Seeress · 11/08/2021 17:41

I've noticed this getting a bit worse since 40 too. Is it hormonal?!

bellalou1234 · 11/08/2021 18:12

Beytybigballs I am terrified of the dentist and hypersensitive to pain so also need a full numbing and find the whole experiance traumatic.. I bought an electric toothbrush last year and feel it's got worse since, my dentist says it wont have but I'm convinced.

My dentist told me to dip a tepee brush in Cordysol and floss NOT rinse with it as it will stain your teeth.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 11/08/2021 18:15

My dh damaged his gums with an electric brush, he's had to go back to a soft manual.

bellalou1234 · 11/08/2021 18:22

I got the toothbrush for my 40th last year and it's worse month by month. Any recommendations on a good manual?

Anything soft.

You sound like me. I have to have a gum graft. Terrifi3d more of the price than anything else.

I go to a periodontist and have to get injections to numb the sensitivity.

bellalou1234 · 11/08/2021 19:35

Pearl Friday how much is it?

OP posts:
TableNiner · 11/08/2021 19:36

This is me. I was recommended:

Oral B electric toothbrush (round head) with the sensitive gum heads
Teepees every evening. Bleeding should stop eventually as the gums get healthier.
No mouthwash when brushing teeth as this washes away the fluoride, can be used at other times of day
Professional cleaning every 4-6 months. I spend money on the hygienist not the dentist.

Im not sure, on monday i saw a prosodontist ??? And he is writing a report and sending it to my periodontist who will do the gum graft with the best cosmetic result. I had to pay the prosothetic dentist 210 euro
Im sure everything is way cheaper in the uk. Im bracing myself for a bill of €4,000 approx.

But more than the price, his use of the word harvest as in gum from the roof of mouth 😵🥶 omg.

And although the result could be really good, also, there is a chance that the graft might not stick.

I hope the report that he's sending to periodontist tells me what the chances of success or failure are.

It's so annoying.

Maybe i should have hypnosis to accept that my gum line is uneven and receded.

PearlFriday · 11/08/2021 19:58

Ok i had to google him to get the word, the dentist i saw was a "prosthodontist"
My normal dentist referred me to him and he will plan the surgery but not carry it out.

It all sounds very ccomplicated.

Is it this convoluted it the uk?

Luckily he confirmed id be heavily sedated.

66babe · 11/08/2021 20:00

@TableNiner I was told almost exactly the same

Mild gum disease ... gingivitis
Phillips Sonicare electric toothbrush with the smallest heads I can find twice daily
Enamel protecting toothpaste - I buy sensodyne
Small picks ( don't know their name ) daily - ignore the bleeding
Floss daily -
Mouthwash in between and try to cut out as much sugar and citrus acid food and drink as possible
Don't know if mine any better yet but had a deep clean and been doing all this for a month

Elouera · 11/08/2021 20:08

My DH, late 40's, also has receeding gums. His is genetic. His dad and grandfather both have it. I don't think he has gum disease, but also needs more regular cleaning at the dentist. These are the things he has done/bought which his dentist recommended:

  • water pik machine
  • flossing with those tiny brushes
  • corsodyl gel on the gums
  • mouthwash at a different time of the day to when he brushes

After having them cleaned, they are very sensitive, so he applies orajel dental gel which helps to numb them. So far this year, 4 dental appointments have been cancelled by the practice and still awaiting another one! Pending how above helps, he will get referred for grafting if it gets worse.

MWestie · 12/08/2021 10:06

This is also me. I've had 3 gum grafts where they take gum from roof of your mouth and graft over receding areas to stabilise them. Private in the UK so expensive but same specialist periodontist I believe takes some NHS referrals. Procedures were uncomfortable but not painful as was numbed up by injection in same way I do if I'm having a filling.

PearlFriday · 12/08/2021 17:33

Glad it wasnt too painful.
Did the gum grafts stick or 'graft'?
Was it a successful procedure?

MWestie · 12/08/2021 18:07

Yes they were all successful and have strengthened those areas though to be honest my gums aren't great (genetic) so am expecting to need more work done at some point.

I'm so nervous of any dental work given my history so was apprehensive about the whole harvest from the roof of your mouth concept but in practice it was fine and the idea of it beforehand was worse than the reality.

PearlFriday · 13/08/2021 18:41

Oh same, genetic sadly. My dad has terrible teeth and gums. My brother got the kind of teeth Tom Cruise paid for from our mother's side of the family and I got weird Queen mother teeth and had braces as an adult which improved by teeth a bit but caused gum recession 😪

PearlFriday · 13/08/2021 18:54

Im glad the procedure was successful and that it sounds worse than it was. The use of the word 'harvest' oooh 😵🥴

curlyfries · 13/08/2021 20:14

I have a routine that seems to work, had receding gums from 40, now 52 and teeth gums have never felt better
Brush with Corsodyl, soft manual brush
Interdental sticks dipped in corsodyl mouthwash and used wherever fit
Oral b ultra floss between teeth closer together
Brush with whitening charcoal toothpaste to prevent staining
Gingigel rubbed on gums if ever feeling sore
Takes ages but so worth the results

There are quite a few dentists and specialists who offer sedation dentistry so not only pain management but you can feel really relaxed or even not really have any recollection at all @bellalou1234. His might be really helpful if you’re putting off any dental work.
