Sustainable and ethical fashion and beauty (for those interested in style and beauty)

I wanted to start a thread about sustainable and ethical fashion, for people who like to look their best or who need to look good for work or whatever.

I love secondhand shops and am always on the lookout for tips on how to shop better in them. I am also a fan of sites like Vestiaire for secondhand, higher end items.

I also like finding eco friendly brands, who are 'walking the walk' as well as 'talking the talk'.

Obviously, the best thing for the planet is to make do with what we have in our wardrobes, but for people who also like to look current or who wouldn't be taken seriously at work if they came in in clothes which were worn out, I'd like to discuss looking good and also being as sustain as possible.

I like doing fashion 'fasts' and also follow a few low buy fashion content creators, like Alyssa Beltempo.

Would anyone like to join me for some sustainable and ethical S&B chat?

People who have no interest in how they look and only wish to stay warm and protect the planet, I truly applaud you, however, this may not be the place for you, although of course anyone is welcome Smile

Meant to add, on Wolf & Badger you can even filter your searches by your sustainability requirements such as being made from at least % recycled materials, paraben free, vegan, net zero carbon footprint, etc.

That's really good, I've noticed a few places (e.g Zalando or thread) where you can toggle on sustainable brands/pieces but it doesn't good into that level of detail on what makes them sustainable
Squiz81 · 16/08/2021 15:26

I do that too @BeeOnADandelion and the bags sliced bread come in are a perfect size for the bathroom bin 😅

Spindelina · 20/08/2021 11:46

As the weather cools, I need new pyjamas (current ones are falling down). Trousers and vest or short sleeves. Preferably separate items (or option to buy different sizes for top and bottom). My go-to would normally be White Company, these ones: www.thewhitecompany.com/uk/Lace-Strap-Pyjama-Set/p/LSCPH?swatch=Navy

I've had a look at a few places and they are either £££ (which I can't justify for something that might only fit for a bit - I'm still losing weight, and I don't think the idea of clothes that will fit a range of weight works for PJs) or shorts which I don't need. Any ideas? Or do I need to wait a bit for autumn - Organic Basics do Tencel shorts which look like they'd be great if they were longer.

While I'm here some other stuff...

I bought a dress for work from Palava.co a few weeks ago (fitted top half with cap sleeves and big skirt which will survive more weight loss) which seemed to tick boxes and is on the Wolf and Badger site mentioned by pp. Noticed immediately by my colleague when she walked in Grin.

I was looking for info re sustainable underwear and came across moralfibres.co.uk/ which I thought might interest some of you.

And one to add to the memory trip, which I was reminded of yesterday: Fry's chocolate cream was the one vegan chocolate bar that you could get in most corner shops. I ate a lot of those.

@BeeOnADandelion

I haven't bought any small binbags for a year because I use the plastic bags my new clothes come in instead.
So do we!

I saved them because I've been planning to sell some clothes, but they are a good size for many of our bins.

Although, if I'm not ordering anything for any of us we'll eventually run out.

I get away with reusing paper ones in my bedroom bin because nobody puts banana skins, satsuma peel, and apple cores in that one.

Not as glamorous as the lovely White Company ones but I love the bamboo simple stuff like these

bambooclothing.co.uk/category/short-sleeved-tops/

Plus they have a decent sale on.

But perhaps not the type you are after

Spindelina · 20/08/2021 18:33

dramaz those tops would be perfect, but it's the loose trousers (not leggings) that I'm struggling to find.

I'm not set on glamorous!

Hullabaloo30 · 20/08/2021 18:40

Hi @Spindelina there are nice pjs here:
noctu.co.uk/ Although maybe too £££? Not sure what your budget is.

Spindelina · 20/08/2021 20:51

Ooo thanks, Hullabaloo. That's just the ticket. And actually I don't really need a top (they fit), just trousers, so I can buy just trousers. Bit of a revelation that, tbh.

Hereforthedramaz · 20/08/2021 21:08

Hullabaloo those look really nice, especially the harem style for lounging/sleeping.

For what it's worth I've always loved the feel of Chelsea Peers pyjamas (although a lot of their designs are a bit twee/ aimed at young-uns) and I'm pleased to see they now have an eco range (sustainable materials and they plant a tree for every pair).

They have a sale on so I'm going to try some and see if they still have the silky softness

AwkwardSquad · 21/08/2021 05:43

Some lovely recommendations and suggestions on this thread. I’ve got a few pieces from this shop in Edinburgh, it’s really lovely and owned by a very nice woman shoptreen.com/

Mammyofonlyone · 21/08/2021 09:02

I'm keen to be part of this thread. I notice a lot of the comments on here are about fit. A colleague and I are launching an online platform to help women buy ethical clothing that is fitted to their individual body shape in the aim that we are able to 'help women buy better'.

I don't want to use this thread as a marketing tool though but I can DM anyone links to our SM it it would be of interest? I hope that this doesn't seem like a post-hijack!

Hereforthedramaz · 21/08/2021 11:18

I went for a charity shop trawl, trying to focus on good quality denim and higher end items.

Happy with a my finds, a fat face denim jacket (with a nice bit of stretch in it) and some mint velvet silky joggers which should be good for my transition between 18 months of only wearing leggings to a smart casual office! Although I am short so I'll need to take them up a bit! Thank you Oxford Scope and Oxfam!

Unfortunately I also fell off the wagon abs bought a gorgeous sweatshirt from Oliver bonas!!

This is an interesting thread but surely the most sustainable thing is not to buy new stuff?!

madamceladon · 27/08/2021 16:42

I've just done a blog post about repairing a wool jumper and a leather bag that people in this thread would enjoy.

HumbugWhale · 27/08/2021 16:45

Thank you for starting this thread, I am trying hard to buy second hand and I don't buy much anyway but I definitely need some ideas and inspiration.

Beebumble2 · 27/08/2021 16:59

I’ve enjoyed reading this thread. I love searching through charity shops for good quality bargains. Like Here I’ve just bought a FatFace denim jacket, a slightly different style and a Masai 100% cotton tunic top which was £2.50!
I find the best bargains are in shops that support local charities. I suspect that people donate because they know where the money goes directly.

Spindelina · 27/08/2021 19:30

Bryony of course, you're right. But sometimes you do need new (or new to you) clothes.

Likewise, the most sustainable thing would be to never travel, but as a compromise I use public transport and don't fly. I eat food that's been imported. We're all making the steps we can and helping each other to do that.
