... Don't completely irritate my ears and make them hot and swollen!

My lovely fiancé bought me a pair of 9ct white gold and diamond earrings to match my engagement ring, I wore them for one day and today my ears are just agony! Hot, swollen, crusty and if prodded, they ooze ☹️

I'm so upset! I don't know what else I could try. I'm wondering about gold..?

Any ideas?

Are they nickel free ?

Platinum or titanium (nickel free) tend to be the least likely to cause allergy.

My daughter recently had her ears pierced and the jeweller said stainless steel is least likely to cause a reaction. Nice and cheap too!

Silver!
I can't wear anything else in my ears. DH bought me a beautiful white gold and emerald pedant and confused the jeweller by insisting on a silver chain for it - but a white gold chain will bring me out in a rash.

Thanks everyone! I wonder what it is, if it's an allergic reaction! It's strange!

Yes, it's an allergic reaction.

GreyJeans · 09/08/2021 19:05

My ears do this with all normal earrings, inc gold, silver etc.

I now look for medical grade materials which might be used if you were having surgery eg, sugcial steel (not just stainless steel), titanium and medical plastic. I have purchased quite a few pairs from Serenity Jewellery.

Smartiepants79 · 09/08/2021 20:21

What were you wearing before? Has this never happened before?

honeybuns007 · 09/08/2021 20:34

18ct gold may work or stainless steel or titanium. 9ct gold is too low a gold percentage. Too much other metal in there that you may be reacting to

Roasteros · 09/08/2021 20:42

I couldn't wear earrings for 20 years because of a nickel allergy - I didn't know it at the time. I only wear silver now, as gold / white gold causes the same reaction as yours, OP. I have no problem with silver.

Roasteros · 09/08/2021 20:43

Also, I occasionally buy non-allergy earrings in my local chemist, which are fine.

MrsPsmalls · 09/08/2021 20:46

I have nickel allergy. For hook or hoop earrings I dip the hook bit in clear nail polish. Can't do it for butterfly tho as the butterfly scrapes it off the post.

9ct gold isn’t real gold it’s gold plating; and the backings are often not even that. I have a severe nickel allergy and have found I can only tolerare wear 22c gold earrings, but you need to go to an Arab / Indian / Jewish jeweller for that I think as I don’t trust the big name stores to know enough about the purity of the gold they use. Even De Beers and Tiffany have let me down lol.

ComingToGetUBarbara · 09/08/2021 21:06

I have developed this out of nowhere and my lovely collection of earrings over the years are now unwearable. So upsetting.

WisestIsShe · 09/08/2021 21:21

I agree with pp stainless steel is the least allergenic metal. For me silver is the worst precious metal but 18c gold is fine. I imagine it's different for everyone.

solacejewellery.co.uk do allergy safe earrings, with 100% happiness guarantee. Great customer service too. I ordered for my daughter, very happy.
