Upping my skincare regime, thoughts please!

Hi all!

So I've been continuously adding to my skincare as I've gotten older, but it's still pretty basic. I'm nearly 37 and I probably look it.

My skin is good, or ok, and I'm looking to ward off wrinkles without getting too involved or expensive, and to generally look better with minimal or no makeup, because I'm lazy and masks mess it up etc.

So my current stuff is:

Wash with water/Dove, occasionally use a foaming or cream cleanser.

Day: Nivea Q10
Night: Superdrug serum and vit E night cream.

I've recently added the Boots Ingredients hylauranic acid serum in the morning, and M&S Priya neck cream morning and night.

I've just ordered some new stuff and want opinions on how I plan to use it, and general thoughts on my regime

I ordered The Ordinary Buffet and Hylauranic acid, and Pixi Glow tonic. My plan is to use buffet in the morning, pat it in a while before moisturising, and to use the HA at night, again pat it on (that's what I've seen recommended) a while before night cream. And use the pixi maybe twice a week as a toner before the serum in the evenings.

What do you guys think??

Also if I added The Ordinary Vitamin C, where would I add it to my regime??

Thanks!

I’m a similar age to you (almost 36) and use very similar products! I love The Ordinary hydraulic acid serum, feels like I’m coating my face in moisture, I put it on every evening after cleansing, wait for it to completely dry, then put on moisturiser. Sometimes I use Ren AHA toner inbetween cleansing and serum, but only when I remember.

I also use retinol in the evening 3 times a week (I read somewhere that you should use it the same number of decades old that you are so 30something - 3 times). I really like Kate Somerville for retinol and moisturisers.

Similar to you I use The Ordinary Buffet and recently bought The Ordinary Vit C but I have no idea when to use it! It sort of seems a bit dry/powdery? I’ll keep an eye out for other people’s replies on that one!

I also always use Elizabeth Arden 8 hr SPF 50 in the morning, particularly after retinol the night before.

I mix vit c powder with my sunblock every day.

I think I would just get a prescription for tretinoin, niacinamide, etc (from dermatica or skin & me), plus a good cleanser and moisturiser with hyaluronic acid, etc built in, eg Cerave.

Peptides and vit C are good in theory but don't have the proven efficacy or tretinoin and niacinamide.

I'd also steer away from the soap and foaming cleansers, too drying and irritating.

Thanks all!

Yes I seldom use the cleaners really, just if I've put on a lot of sunblock that day or otherwise feel too geasy. What's a good (cheap) cleanser if avoiding the foam??

Where does one get vit c powder? I've not heard of that. If I use the serum is it after the buffet and before moisturiser?

It does feel complicated sometimes!

I will check out the 8 hr SPF 50, that looks great!

If you can afford it, try Clarins stuff. You can ask for samples to start with. I like the SPF day cream and night cream, and I also think the Santal treatment oil makes a difference. www.clarins.co.uk/skincare-face-face-treatment-oils/270/

It is expensive, but I do think it's worth it.

LambChopsMcGee · 09/08/2021 16:10

Not sure I can @houselikeashed! But I will definitely keep it in mind for when I'm in a better place money wise, thanks!

Vit C mornings after HA. Or before, doesn't really matter. SPF 50 every day.
If you're not adding a retinol in the evening, you can build up to using the glycolic every night (not immediately though)
If you watch some of Nadine Baggott videos she says you only need
AM cleanse -anything you like, no need to spend on cleanser, it goes down the plug. Superdrug Vit E is great
Vit C
HA
SPF

Evening
Cleanse
Retinol/acid toner
HA
Moisturize if you need it.

Superdrug's Simply Pure cream cleanser is good and highly rated by Dr Dray from YouTube. It's cheap too: £2.99 and often on buy one, get second half price. If you would like an oil cleanser, Primark Prep + Perfect do a nice one for £3. I've recently been using Child's Farm fragrance free moisturiser (£2.90 from Amazon) to remove my makeup. It's beautifully creamy with shea & cocoa butter. The Cerave non-foaming cleansers are also well thought of, if a little pricier. All of these options are fragrance free.

I'm on a budget, so I prefer to go cheap on cleansers and moisturisers so I can afford my tretinoin.

doadeer · 09/08/2021 22:15

What's your skin type?

LambChopsMcGee · 10/08/2021 09:05

Thank you all, this is great to know!

@doadeer I'm not really sure! Normal? I don't get many spots or anything these days, and it seems just fine most of the time. I need my moisturiser but it's not too dry when I do use it, and it's not too oily unless I've piled on lots of sunscreen etc.

I don't really have any skin complaints I want to address, just want to keep it in good condition as long as I can and ward off wrinkles etc where possible!
