Can you help me pack? a week near Lake District

Going for a week to a cottage. Will be doing some ( light) walking, I don't like really long walks. Maybe visiting Hadrian's wall and nearby. Can't decide what to pack.
I've been mostly wearing dresses and flipflops for the last few weeks, not sure if those would work there.
Do I need wet and cold weather gear? Wellies? Jumpers? Help me please....leaving at dawn tomorrow and nothing packed!

Surely the first thing you do is look at the weather?!
I looked up the lakes on my phone and it looks like rain every day.

I would definitely have waterproof jacket and boots. Light layers in case it's warm. Don't wear jeans out walking if it's raining, they take an age to dry off.

I live nearish the lakes forecast is showers most of the week and mid teens for temperature.

Light layers, trainers, waterproof boots and jacket. Hopefully you’ve booked restaurant reservations because everywhere is rammed!

AOwlAOwlAOwl · 08/08/2021 19:12

Hadrian's wall isn't that close to the Lake District. It's a good 50 miles away, or at least the bits worth seeing are.

Other than that, casual clothes. Wellies are pointless, unless they fit well you can't walk in them any sort of distance. Any sort of sturdy shoes are fine though. Lots of people in casual clothes round Rydal water.

I met a man in flip flops halfway up a big fell the other week so although they're not ideal walking gear it can be done Wink

I mostly wore shorts and t shirts in the lakes this week. Weather was glorious.

We left the Lakes this morning and had the wettest 3 days there. Didn't change what we did-walking and kayaking- but we did get very wet twice a day so lots of spare clothes and keep a change in the car in case you don't go back to base between activities.
Loved it though, my first time there and can't wait to go back.

Littlefiendsusan · 08/08/2021 19:16

And I'm gong to invest in a waterproof rucksack too.

FreekStar2 · 08/08/2021 20:04

I was in the Lakes a couple of months back.

If you are out and about doing hill walks and visiting Hadrians wall you will need some waterproof trainers/walking shoes, a waterproof lightweight coat, leggings or walking trousers or shorts if hot. Long and short sleeved t-shirts, maybe a fleece or hoodie to wear when chilly.

In the lakeside towns most people were wearing walking gear, jeans, trainers/walking shoes- or the posh old ladies it was full of were wearing cardigans, shirts, chinos and shoes like they sell in Hotter.

DelphiniumBlue · 08/08/2021 21:03

OK got a rainproof parka and some boots and trainers. Got leggings, maybe not jeans then.
We are between Hadrian Wall and the Lake district, I'll look at booking somewhere to eat then, I guess!

I have looked at weather, it looks like sun and rain! I can never manage to think what to wear for weather other than the weather I am experiencing at the time, hence asking. Plus having never been there, don't know if it has micro-climates, like in Devon. Having thoughts of looking for where the rain isn't and driving there, but don't know if that is possible. Thanks for the tip re jeans, wouldn't have thought of that, maybe shorts might work better. Think I'll keep my clothes, or at least some, in the car.

In all honesty the Lake District is it's own micro climate I experienced all weathers in one day on more that one occasion!
