How to make my clothes more interesting

sunsetandcocktails · 07/08/2021 22:44

Over the last year or so I've been consciously buying clothes that are good quality and good staples...
Plain t-shirts
Good jeans
Navy trousers
Khaki wide leg cropped
White shirt
Cashmere grey jumper....

But now, when I go to choose what to wear in the morning, it feels more than a bit boring!! Grey, white, navy, blue are colours that suit me but it also all looks plain and too 'classic' for me...

How do I now make my outfits more interesting ? !

Think I might be avoiding prints and patterns as have put on a couple of stone !

Am now a size 18 on bottom half and 16 on the top. Hour glass. Aged 39.

Belts, necklaces, cardigans, nice shoes to style the outfit up, trying a not in T-shirt's ect 😊

Good, handmade earrings are my go to. I use Etsy a lot and find other pieces which make a classic outfit into something less boring.

I have hand cut silver and copper earrings that I love...the copper has been treated so it's a lovely blue-green colour.

Also different hairstyles! A basic outfit is amazing because you can style accessories and a hairstyle differently and it won't look too much

Completer pieces - like cardigans, blazers or jackets.

I have nice hair accessories like hair bands and clips, which always make me feel a bit more put together.

This is true...I have quite long hair and I wear it up in a messy bun type thing with a red silk scarf tied around it. Looks lovely but if I wore it with print clothing, it would make me look juvenile. But with a navy lambswool jumper and good jeans, it's nice.

Accessories!

Sunglasses.

These earrings - scroll down.

Get a scarf from here. Not one of the quiet sensible ones, choose something with a huge logo.

Then wear one of these bags cross body with your grey jumper and navy trousers.

Headband?

Or beanie?

Oh - these socks would go with the hat! (They are rather gorgeous.)

Wear everything with your most battered sneakers. Good to go!

£140 for a beanie!

The earrings were amazing. Sadly they would not suit me at all but they were fantastic on the model.

FortunesFave · 08/08/2021 05:17

I love the earrings! Beautiful! You could wear those and nothing else! Well...you know what I mean! Grin

Billandben444 · 08/08/2021 06:17

I agree with accessorise! You have a good-quality blank canvas of clothes to work with and the correct chunky necklace or scarf will elevate the look. Nobody will ever comment on a plain white top or khaki trousers but they'll all notice a scarf (in a colour that lifts you, for me that's an 'ice-cream colour') or distinctive earrings - are you a gold or silver person? And yes to a cross body bag - I wish the DofCambridge would add one to her casual styles instead of the dreaded clutch.

sunsetandcocktails · 08/08/2021 07:43

Ah ok so it's now about the accessories, that makes sense.
I've got classic Rayban Wayfarers but would love to branch out

@Edmontine Thanks for the links! Had heard of Acne Studios but never properly looked.
Definitely some great items that would make my standard outfits more interesting! Thanks ... off to browse the big logo scarves

I would mix up your staples with a few brightly coloured or brightly patterned pieces. E.g. a floral skirt, and interesting top.

Edmontine · 08/08/2021 07:58

Great! That was all a bit tongue in cheek, by the way - but yes, with really lovely classic clothes you need a few trashy accessories to mix things up and keep your style contemporary.

I would counsel against the ‘statement necklace’ though. Very strongly.

Edmontine · 08/08/2021 08:01

(I’m sure it doesn’t need saying, but the Acne scarves are presumably designed in a spirit of irony and fun ...)

Jumpingintosummer · 08/08/2021 08:05

Acessories
Good haircut and classic colour
Neat nails - nothing garish
Great handbag!

HelloDulling · 08/08/2021 08:10

Red lipstick, very good hair. They you can wear a navy crew neck jumper every day of the week.

AuntieStella · 08/08/2021 08:10

Get a rainbow of tshirts (try uniqlo) and a couple of more colourful jumpers (wool, but not cashmere).

A bit of accent colour will lift your spirits.

OhRosalind · 08/08/2021 08:13

If you like wayfarers try them in a bright, bold shade.

A nice watch - I like how a big man’s watch looks.
Dark/bright nail polish or lipstick.
Jewellery - small layered necklaces, cocktail rings.
Great bags.

EatingAllThePies · 08/08/2021 08:17

Brooches work well on plainer outfits

sunsetandcocktails · 08/08/2021 08:34

@OhRosalind Just seen that you can pick your own combination of coloured frames and lenses on the rayban website!
