Secondhand lovers - a thread for buyers and sellers of second hand clothes

Thought I’d start a thread for preloved clothes fans.

I’ve always bought loads secondhand, used to buy a lot via eBay but now I live somewhere with amazing charity shops I mainly shop in them.

I’ve always sold second hand too, but have found the market has plummeted since Covid started. I guess so many people are having clear outs, money is tight & certain clothes like work wear are no longer sought after (although maybe that will start to change?!)

I used to use eBay but found I was paying a lot in fees. I’m now trying Vinted. I’ve listed 30-odd items and sold 6. Prices are very very low though, and I turn down some exceptionally cheeky offers!!

I’m currently getting less on Vinted than charity shops ask around here (!) so I’m being very mindful only to buy stuff in charity shops that I absolutely love as I can’t guarantee getting my money back on Vinted / eBay these days if I change my mind.

I’m also noting there’s look loads of overpriced tat on Vinted - like well worn H&M /Zara for stupid money. Assume those people aren’t selling anything?

As a very regular eBay buyer, I'd say unlucky. I can't comment on the other sites, but that's very rare for me to get something like that.

GingerBreadTeddy · 19/08/2021 13:29

@ilovecherries I’d say bad luck. I’ve had 13 orders from Vinted arrive (all kids clothes) and all have been as described and I’m very pleased

Thanks - I maybe won’t give up right yet then. Especially as the first pair was exactly what I was expecting. Should I just leave negative feedback now (eBay)? Or just write it off to experience and resolve never to buy again from a seller who was arsey throughout the entire transaction? I know I’d have got a PP refund if I’d raised a case, but frankly can’t be arsed with the hassle and can’t get them back to PO this week. I’ve washed them twice by themselves and stuck them outside in the sun, and they have cleaned up fine. Although after the dirt is out it turns out they are black and not the advertised grey!

If I ever get a faulty item, I take photos and raise an issue immediately. More often than not I get a full refund without being asked to return it

GingerBreadTeddy · 19/08/2021 21:02

I’ve bought loads on eBay over the years and only had one item I had to complain about - a dress with yellow armpit stains Envy (not envy). I got a refund

I sell and buy on eBay. I’ve downloaded the Depop app and heard of Vinted and want to try them out for selling , will I need a printer?

I tend to buy more in charity shops then sell online.

GingerBreadTeddy · 20/08/2021 11:42

@Thighdentitycrisis I use Vinted and I only offer Hermes post as the Hermes drop off point is so close to my house. (Post office is too far away and open weird hours so I don’t offer Royal Mail)

I have a printer & the buyer pays for post & the system automatically sends me a label I print out & stick on - much less faff than eBay. So simple .

If you don’t have a printer I think some Hermes drop off points have a label printing function, but my local one does not

GingerBreadTeddy · 20/08/2021 11:43

But I guess if you use Royal Mail you can just address parcels by hand?!

I buy a fair bit in charity shops , you can see what you're getting and if it doesn't fit i think of it as a donation to the charity.

I buy on ebay only occasionally , and v carefully as I've been disappointed in the past .

Ew to the dirty trousers with crotch stains! If anything deserves bad feedback that does.

Thighdentitycrisis · 20/08/2021 13:42

@GingerBreadTeddy
Thanks I will look into it then

Ye all need to have a look at Depop Drama on Instagram; it’s so funny! It does put me off buying from there though. It seems a bit chaotic!
I usually stick to eBay and charity shops, but I’ll check out Vinted if it is as cheap as you guys say it is.

PrincessNutNuts · 20/08/2021 17:09

My secondhand bra off eBay is great so no problems there.

And I've sorted out some stuff to sell. I just need to get started.

Am I right in thinking that Vinted is better for the low value items?

Or should I just start with low value stuff on both eBay and Vinted to get me started?

Do people care about eBay feedback any more?

GingerBreadTeddy · 20/08/2021 19:24

@PrincessNutNuts in my experience people aren’t willing to pay much on Vinted. I’m not hugely experienced but I’ve made over 40 sales in the last few weeks since I started.

Kids clothes go well if they are decent and I’ve bundled them. I’m tending to get £10-£15 for a ten item bundle. Good brands in good condition though.

My dresses have gone for £5 - £15 and that’s good brands (Reiss, Whistles, Jigsaw, Hobbs, Cos etc)

I guess it depends on if you want a quick sale. Sure someone will be along to tell me I’m doing it wrong! But for me it’s about clearing stuff out not making mega-bucks
