How much do you spend on clothes each month?

Just that really. How much do you spend each month or year on clothes relative to your salary?

Just spent £100 and was feeling guilty but then relative to my salary, maybe this is just "normal"?

After saving for a deposit for years and buying everything in charity shops / going without / borrowing from friends, I am unsure what is a sensible amount to spend.

Maybe I'm just trying to justify my purchases! 🤣😂🤣

Not as much as you might think! I bought a pair of Chloè boots, a Loewe bag, a B&sh skirt, a cashmere roll neck from Joseph, Prada sandals, a Raey dress, a pair of Russell and Bromley clogs, a pair of Veronica Beard trousers, a Proenza Schouler leather skirt and some MeandEm sandals.

Reading that back it does sound quite a bit!.

I don't work in fashion, I work in tech. It's a competition to see who can be most dressed down. I don't engage!

I do not have a set budget but I only buy clothes when I need them. Last big splurge was for a family wedding, that meant three outfits as a three day wedding celebration. I did have an evening jacket already. That was about 1k but was 2 years ago. Since then I have spent a tenner on some knickers, literally that’s it.

@BeeOnADandelion

Does anyone else feel that other people feel threatened if you look smart?

Totally. Round here everyone wears drab clothes for everything. Jeans or leggings or joggers. Black, grey, navy, beige, dark green. There's the occasional sunshine yellow or fuchsia pink raincoat, but that's about it. Women in town on Friday or Saturday nights maybe in something sparkly or a minidress. It's like a dress code of depression everywhere I look and nothing else is allowed. If I wear eg an ordinary floral sundress I'll be asked by friends where I'm going or where I've been. As if it's compulsory to wear scruffy clothes if all you're doing is staying home or running errands. I was quite shocked about what happened in lockdown with so many people having the approach that if nobody except family will see them it's ok to dress in any old thing and relax on personal hygiene/presentation. I thought most people dressed for themselves and not for others, but I was wrong. As for your friends comments about people staring at you if you went for a walk in a blazer, that's so bizarre and says a lot more about her than you, she was obviously uncomfortable about that prospect. The poster who said "what if dogs jumped up at you?" is showing their true colours too. It's totally unacceptable for anyone to let their dog jump on someone else ever, unless it's your close friends and you know for certain they don't mind. It's damn rude to expect anyone to put up with it. Owners should train their dogs or keep them leashed and hold the collar when passing others.

True colours, haha! I absolutely hate dogs jumping up on me. I don't own a dog and probably never will. Not sure why you jumped to this conclusion? I wrote it because it's happened to me on a number of occasions.

I buy everything reduced on Next account during sales. Over the summer have spent c £200.

Middleagedfrog · 22/08/2021 08:13

About £50 per month mostly ebay and sales.

I am in my 50s and had years and years of not buying very much because I didn't have the budget for the clothes I liked. With online shopping and ebay I've had much more success.

Also, I used shop for an outfit for an occasion without much luck. Now if I see something I like on ebay I buy it. I don't usually getting into bidding wars and I have a limit on how much I will spend on an item but I've bought some lovely clothes this way, it's much more fun than when I used to traipse around shopping centres for hours trying to eek out my modest budget.

Depends. In September last year I spent £100 birthday money on a Celtic and Co jumper and £220ish on some boots. Some months I'll buy one £10 pair of jeans from Sainsbury's, or some socks. Averaged out I reckon about £70 a month.

I spend at least £3000 on clothes a year. That's about 10% of my take home salary, but I do not have a mortgage. I don't tend to buy every month, I go a few months then end up buying a few bits in one go online. I had my colours done and it's helped me to avoid poor choices and allows for a better coordinated wardrobe.

I mostly buy higher end high street - Whistles, Jigsaw, Sweaty Betty, Celtic and Co, Hush, Baukjen etc as this is the price point I am most comfortable with. I usually buy with a code. I try to get quality items that will last for longer. I send a lot to charity shops when I no longer love them or if they are beyond further life, I re-cycle the material at my local tip.

I’m buying new ankle boots for work this week. That’s it until Christmas. Determined to use what I have.
