Best raincoat/ outdoorsy coat?

What's the best waterproof/walking jacket I can buy that isn't totally frumpy?

Ideally something that's long enough to cover my bum, is properly weatherproof but comfy and not all plasticky/feels like I'm wrapped in umbrella fabric.

Bonus points if it can can be worn on top of a baby carrier without making me look like Quasimodo.

I'd like to spend less than £100 but budget can stretch if that's totally unrealistic.

Hopeful bump 😊

I've looked at the likes of Joules, Barbour et al and I'm not loving anything so far.

You need to look at mountaineering brands for serious weatherproofing - Merrell, Patagonia, North Face etc
Get a separate cover for baby carrier.

Rains or Protected Species

Didrikson coat? Pricey but for good reason - ebay is your friend

MerryGoRoundBrain · 02/08/2021 21:43

I’ve got this one:
www.seasaltcornwall.com/porth-mellin-waterproof-coat
Not sure if this counts as stylish but it covers my bum (and I’m tall), it’s waterproof and isn’t ugly. Also, the hood is good size and really stays on in bad weather.
The only thing I’d say is you need to size up if you’re quite booby, it’s not very big around the chest.

Helly Hanson is the way to go

I've got a Seasalt winter waterproof that I bought in the sale, I think it's the High Water one. I do find it a bit frumpy tbh (bought it in a boring grey colour which doesn't help) but I have to say it's TOTALLY waterproof and really warm too.

…. and one of these for the baby

Bitofachinwag · 02/08/2021 21:54

Google babywearing raincoats .

Rainbowshit · 02/08/2021 21:59

Protected species

DeathMetalMum · 02/08/2021 22:01

Probably not for baby wearing but I like lighthouse by target dry.

Agree with what others have said about hush quality. Some items that I've bought have not lasted well. I recently ordered a couple of pairs of trousers, and the styling is great, but the fabric is really awful.

They are made of a very thin, viscose type fabric - the kind that you would expect to find in Primark. I know that they will crease like mad, so will reluctantly have to return them, which is annoying as the style is ideal. I wouldn't mind if they were cheap, but they're very pricey for what they are.

If you want warm the North Face Arctic Parka lasts years and is fully waterproof.
In fact, all my North Face waterproofs last well

Another vote for Seasalt. I have a knee legth hooded one in a sort of raspberry colour and it's fantastic. Totally waterproof and a fairly warm lining. I'm wearing it today It's August FFS.

Something like this

Seasalt, Didrikson and protected species. I have all three and they're great.

mrssmiling · 19/08/2021 16:50

Another vote for Seasalt - I have a Janelle coat. Maybe not terribly stylish, but warm, comfortable and a decent length - waterproof too.
More than your budget, but they last years.

@Rainbowshit

Protected species
I have a Protected Species trench coat, it looks nice and is properly waterproof but the sleeves are very long and can't be shortened. Also the hood makes it look like a school coat so I took it off which sort of defeats the purpose of a raincoat.

I treated myself to one of these from Fat Face a couple of weeks back:

www.next.co.uk/style/st742140/209087#209087

Like you, I have been longing forever for a properly waterproof cost that's not frumpy, is long enough and isn't all nasty and plasticky - this meets all those criteria and more!

I've linked to it in Next so that you can see all the colours but it's in the sale on Fat Face for only £60 - only navy and mustard online but possibly the other colours in store if you have one close by:

www.fatface.com/women/clothing/coats-jackets/taylor-waterproof-jacket/955872.html?dwvar_955872_color=navy&cgid=women-clothing-coats-and-jackets#start=1

I hope you find your perfect waterproof soon 🥰
