Really hope this doesn't come across as boastful. Its not intended that way at all. I just wanted to share with you all how you've helped me this past year.
Late last year I ventured into town for some Xmas shopping. It had been a hard year, and I thought a day of retail therapy might make me feel better. I tied my greying hair up in a bun, put on my best anorak, most sensible bag and comfortable trainers.
I had one of those shop window moments where I caught sight of myself and was horrified. I looked as depressed as I felt, and felt very sorry for myself.
I decided the coat needed to go, so impulse purchased a lovely wrap coat in the sale. It kicked something off in me that has helped get me out of a funk, so I thought I would share as I know I'm not the only one in this situation.
I've since scoured this board for inspiration, and the following things have really helped me:
- actually having a skincare routine beyong slapping on a bit of moisturiser. I now use glycolic acid and retinol as well. No idea if that's a legit combo but it works for me. I look much brighter for it.
- minimally updating my makeup. When lockdown eased I went to one of those beauty counters in Boots and asked a lady to help me pick a few bits. I came away with a new blusher and foundation which are much more suited to my skin tone. I also bought an eyelash curler which makes a surprising difference.
- I cut and coloured my hair. I'm mega grey even in my 30's so have committed to semi permanents for life. I'd tried growing the grey out during lockdown but I was too young for it (imo)
- mari kondo'd my wardrobe, then spent time trying on the stuff left over to see what suited me best (colous/fit etc)
- signed up to stitch fix and had them send me stuff id never considered before. I sometimes keep the stuff, mostly not, but it has stretched my view of what looks good on me
- bought a lovely new bag from Ally Capellino following a thread on here. Its sensible, massive, yet stylish!
- lost some weight on intermittent fasting.
- improved my posture by just standing up straight rather than slouching all the time
Its taken a good 8 months or so but I can see such an improvement in how I look and feel, and its all down to this board. Small steps, one at a time, most of them not very expensive.
I just wanted to say thank you, show it can be done, and see if any of you have any other gems of style advice that have helped you.
