A PERMANENT Light Brown Box Dye, it's got to exist?!

My hair is due to be coloured again, but I'm holding off until we go away in a few weeks because if I do it now, although I use a permanent colour, it will have washed up/out before out the trip. the thing is, I really really like the colour result and I'm reluctant to try others in case they turn out too dark or too red. I don't want to go to a salon because if I am totally honest a) I can't afford it really and b) I'm never actually happy with what they do!

So I usually use Garnier Belle Colour in Natural Light Brown. My hair at the moment is just blergh. Its like a gingery, coppery medium blonde, it does nothing for me, it's my own fault it's ended up like this. Anyway the Belle colour in Natural Light Brown sorts it all out and I love the colour when its done, just a lovely light brown. Then after a couple of weeks or so, it washes up. I avoid washing it as much and use colour safe shampoos but no success.

I've looked at reviews for other brand hair dyes. The Garnier Nutrisee in Light Brown or number 6, reviews have said it leaves red tones. Same for Loreal Excellence. Some other ones have said the colour results have come out to dark.

I suppose I could use a shade down in the Belle Colour and go for the Brown but knowing my luck it won't wash up and be too dark!

Any recommendations for a good permanent light brown box dye? one that preferably doesn't leave red tones.

I used to use clariol nice and easy No 7 for a non brassy light brown till I eventually changed to No 8 which is a dark blonde.

I'm thinking it may be more of a mid brown but Live Urban Brown is quite nice.
I felt it was a bit light for me but most of their colours seem to last a lot longer than other brands.

Argh! So in desperation, well because my hair was looking so crap, in haste I picked up nice and easy 24 wash Light Ash Brown - I had read some good reviews and have actually used it a few years ago so thought I may as well do it, it’s a semi & even if it comes out a bit darker it’ll wash up.

The lengths and ends are really really dark (ds says they’re black) the root area is like a warm light brown :( from the pics you can’t really tell the difference between the root area & lengths but it’s definitely there. Yeah the pics are bad, I know!

So in my stupidity & haste I’ve buggered my hair up again! Looks like I’ll be washing it quite a bit over the next week & it’s already looking really dry.

Are you using two boxes? You should be with hair that length. You could be getting a patchy result because you're not applying a thick even layer of dye over your whole head. Also, I ignore the instructions and always leave dye on for 45min after I've applied it and combed it through (so it's probably on there an hour or slightly longer). Otherwise it's not on every single part of my head long enough to 'take' properly. I use L'Oréal Excellence Crème.

In your case I'd leave it a week then do it again, same colour with another two boxes.

I've found anything marked 'light brown' on a box is actually medium brown. Try dark blonde next time.

And they're never ashy, no matter what they claim! Always warm.

Have you tried the Herbatint range, made by Antica Herbavita? I like them because although they are permanent you don't have to use the whole bottle at once; you can mix up a small cupful to do your roots. The colour quality is good. I've only ever seen this range in health food stores IRL, but you can get it online too.
By the way, I think your hair looks really good. Not dry or uneven at all.

Nice and easy always go much much darker than the colour on the box.

This range is true to the colours in the box and the dark blonde or the light brown may be what you need in the future once the nice and easy has gone.

What you need is a double 7 with 1 for ash. So 77/1
Have a look at Wella Perfect.

Yeah I used two boxes, my hair isn’t actually that long, I’d say probably just on shoulders.

The Garnier Belle in Natural Light Brown is my favourite, it turns out just that, a very light neutral brown, but it’s permanent yet washes out too quickly. I wish I had just used that again!

Will see how this washes up over the next couple of weeks & see what it’s like. I think it’s just a bit of a shock as I haven’t been this dark in about a year & when ds said it looks black I was like shit what have I done!

So this is interesting! Just an update….

My hair did lighten up so phew! It turned out it was actually a nice colour that I had used. It did wash up, rather quickly, too quickly in fact.

So I’ve taken the plunge & used Clairol Light Ash Brown, the same shade (same brand, Clairol) but in the permanent one. And it’s turned out much lighter and dare I say, a little bit warm? The semi version was more ‘ashier’ definitely cooler and darker.

I actually prefer the result of the semi, over the permanent. But it does wash up a bit quick, doesn’t last 24 shampoos & I wash my hair every other day, sometimes every two days. Use a colour safe shampoo. I don’t wash my hair until 2 days after colouring to give the dye time to set in. I know this permanent one will wash up too, they all do on my hair, I don’t know why but my hair doesn’t hold colour and it’s far from being in fab condition, it’s dry so should soak colour up!

I did a quick google search the other day & apparently Garnier Olia in Light brown or Brown results in a really good ash brown, I don’t know how long it lasts for as I’ve never used it.
