I have PCOS and have more hair than Chewbacca. In the summer I find it really hard to cope with the hair on my thighs. They're so hairy and bumpy on the back, I remove the hair and literally have 2 days of ok thighs before the stubble kicks in. Am I the only woman in the world with hairy thighs?

My dd has PCOS, I have just spoken to her GP (dd has ASD and is 15, she doesn’t really care about the hair), gp said there was treatments to reduce hair growth so it might be worth talking to your gp? DD’s grows back a few days after shaving too 😭, might be worth trying a epilator or even laser hair removal?

Pinktruffle · 31/07/2021 22:59

I'm covered in the stuff everywhere. I honestly think I am hairer than my husband and the hair is black so very capable. Makes dressing in the summer a nightmare. I've tried everything, laser has been helpful in the reduction of the hair but has not gotten rid of it. Before TTC and failing miserably, the body hair was the worst part of PCOS for me.

Pinktruffle · 31/07/2021 23:01

*visible not capable - silly autocorrect

Thank you, I've been to the GP so many times but they're unwilling to do anything and just advise to lose weight.

I've used an epilator, gosh they hurt, and am currently having laser treatment on my face. I just feel such a freak and when I see other women in shorts I feel sad that's not me. I hope your daughter gets some help and good results.

I am hairier than most men I know! Am having laser on my face at the moment, I'm not sure I can afford to have my legs sorted out too.

It's such a phaff particularly this time of year.

Aw, I hope the TTC works out for you.

You're not alone. I am so much hairier than DH. I can't epilate, I just find it too painful. Shaving causes rash or bumps, even with decent barrier and fresh blades. So hairy, urgh. Backs of thighs especially bad as well, from knee to butt cheek. I'm such a catch!

Yup, the backs of my thighs are like a forest and they're bumpy too so shaving is a complete no no. I use hair removing cream on my legs and bum... I'm such a catch too 😉

I’m kind of pleased that dd isn’t bothered (due to her autism), she is very hairy, she has hair on her back and lower tummy. I’m unsure what to do about her facial hair as it’s getting worse, if I shave it I’m worried it will come back darker but I’m not sure she will let anyone wax it or laser it.

Have you tried hair removal cream?

Lovemusic33 · 01/08/2021 16:33

Sorry, just seen that you do use cream, I might have to try it with dd.

Not on my face though. You can get more sensitive creams for the face but I've not got on with them very well, I don't know if it's because I've shaved for a long time beforehand.

Laser, for me, is the best thing and only takes about 15 minutes. It's great that she's not bothered.

Thank you, I have shaved DD’s face twice so her hair is still quite fine so I might give the cream a go 😬, getting her to sit still and to not touch it for 20 minutes might be a challenge.

I bought a phillips lumea. Literally changed my life. I had thick dark hair on thighs especially the backs like you say and stubble back by the afternoon and now I could go a week or two without shaving! Doesn't work on my face though unfortunately as the hair there is lighter.

I've heard great things about the lumea, worth the investment then?

For PCOS I found the most effective/effortless solutions were from the GP - the pill &/or spironolactone. The cause is the hormone imbalance so makes sense to address that.
My hair was on my upper arms and chest and I found a sympathetic (female) GP.
Vaniqa was another prescription cream I tried (slows regrowth) but felt less effective.
Other than that I opted for waxing as I got longer hair free periods.

DoylyCarte · 01/08/2021 23:46

I second the lumea - it’s definitely worth the investment as long as your skin/hair type is suitable; works best on dark hairs against pale skin (oh, the joy!). I think that the main thing is that the hairs are dark rather than blonde.

After only 4 treatments my legs are basically smooth a week after I last shaved; no stubble as such, just a couple here and there and some more almost unnoticeable blonder ones. Also bikini and armpits are basically sorted.

You have to do a treatment every 2 weeks for first 4 treatments, I’d recommend doing it on the same day every week but alternate areas (as it’s easy to forget and it has to be adhered to or you start again). So I do legs one week, then from the thighs up the following lol.

I didn’t splash out on hair removal previously in the sense of salon waxing so haven’t saved money, but the mental load lifting of not having to think about it and feel self conscious etc also has a value. And clearly a monetary one as I was going just about to pay £000’s laser treatment but then tried this first as it was so highly recommended (I didn’t actually have high hopes) and now don’t need to. So worth the investment as was in fact a significant saving!

Msgiggles30 · 02/08/2021 10:55

Yes 100% worth it. So much so that 4 of my friends now have one too 😂. Although they just have 'normal' hair not the PCOS madness like me! I just got the advanced one not the prestige which worked out cheaper and works brilliantly anyway. Theu often come on offer. Shame about the face but been brilliant for legs and pubic areas.

TragicKingdom · 02/08/2021 17:55

Thank you both, I will definitely look into and try and nab one on offer!

Another vote for the lumea- I have had incredible results with it. I’m fair skinned, thick dark hair. Sensitive skin so hair removal cream really irritated me. Could shave my legs and underarms at 9pm and when I woke up in the morning I’d feel stubble there already. Was the bane of my life. I got a lumea second hand off eBay and in 4/5 sessions it has got rid of I’d say 70% of my hair. I did get a rash after using it the first few times but it went after a couple of days and the results were so so worth the rash. I’ve used it on my bikini line too with brilliant results x

Msgiggles30 · 02/08/2021 21:42

Just to say just seen someone post on a PCOS group that i follow on Facebook that costco have the lumea on offer for 199 if you have a costco card x
