Getting rid of red hair dye qq

DD (16) dyed her hair red in lockdown with a box dye. All good. Then she got bored with it and dyed it brown (box dye). This looked good for a while but then the brown started to wear off but you can still see the red (now a gingery colour) underneath. She's done one more brown box dye since and is really fed up of the gingery colour. She wants to get back to a dark brown (a shade or two darker than her natural hair colour).

Can any hairdressers please advise? What can she do? Will she just have to wait for the red to grow out? Why doesn't it fade like the browns?

My sister did this and had to get the red stripped. No idea why it clings so much.

She needs an ashy brown rather than a warm one. Look for dyes with 'ash' or 'cool' in the title or head to the hairdresser for a colour correction.

She needs a permanent colour. Those don't fade unless they're weird unnatural colours. A permanent brown will stay brown and not wash out.

The box dyes she used have been permanent...

She's rung loads of hairdressers but they're all massively busy at the moment.

The box dyes will have contained chemicals which lightened her hair at the same time as colouring it. That gingery tone could actually be the colour her hair is underneath the dye, rather than the result of colour deposits.

I put some dark brown permanent dye on my hair back in Feb and it's absolutely faded to a warm-toned mid-brown. Underneath the dye my hair was kind of orange (bleach disaster) so it's not surprising.

I did this back as a teen now almost 23 , I have ended up having to grow my hair out to get rid of the red/orange tinge it's taken since last jan to grow past my shoulders

I'm still growing my red out 3 years on from when I last had it done and the hairdresser completely ballsed it Up to the point my hair wouldn't take any dye at all afterwards!

To get rid of the ginger that was becoming a problem I used a clarifying shampoo for a month then did a dye strip. I then continued to use clarifying shampoo for another month. By which point my hair would then take a dye so I could cover up the multicoloured bits! I only use semi perm dye until the remainder has grown out..... Not long to go now I don't think!

My DD did this as a teen. She ended up with sort of tartan hair where patches of red kept coming through. Only a hairdresser was able to save her and get her hair looking normal.

Use a Dye stripper to try and get rid of the red then a cool brown dye. Red and black dyes are very hard to get rid of though, so don’t be surprised if it’s not successful.
I’ve gone from a violet box dye shade to mid brown and had to get hairdresser to use bleach as the ends just didn’t let go of it.
