Sun spots on Face

Blastandbollocks · 29/07/2021 08:09

I have large areas of skin where it's gone brown like an enlarged freckle which is sun damage (checked out) due to HRT.

Is there a miracle (cheapish) product to reduce the appearance of this?

Vitamin C serum!

DinosaurDiana · 29/07/2021 08:18

Can you put moisturiser on after the serum ? It makes my skin a bit dry.

doadeer · 29/07/2021 08:19

an acid exfoliate might reduce the appearance I think Glycholic is best for this.

Lots of Spf 50

endoflevelbaddy · 29/07/2021 08:43

You can try a variety of brightening products such as glycolic acid toners, vitamin c serum (the ordinary do a wide range of these and the Deciem website can point you in the right direction).

You also need to be using high spf every single day to protect from further damage. I really rate the Vichy anti age 3 in 1 spf 50.

I have large patches of hyper pigmentation from sun damage and all these things have prevented it getting worse, but not got rid of it. I'm currently having a course of Illumifacials at my local laser treatment place and I am blown away by the results. I've only had 2 of 6 so far and the difference is huge.

My facial suncream, Roche-Posay Anthelios, SPF 50, claims to visibly reduce dark spots. I don't have any, so no idea if it works.

Agree with recommendation of vit C. Tretinoin is also supposed to work, though I'm not sure where I'd recommend you'd purchase it from other than on prescription from Dermatica or similar (I bought some on recommendation from one of the overseas online pharmacies and never received it).

WhoNeedsaManOfTheWorld · 29/07/2021 11:01

I have them on my arms and legs. None on my face probably because I don't like the sun and always use a moisturiser with sunscreen in it
I'm currently using apple cider vinegar twice a day. Leaving it on for about 10 mins then wiping off. I think they are lightening
I'm on the look out for a product but most seem to have poor reviews

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 29/07/2021 11:02

I’m convinced mine are caused by my glasses! The trend for big glasses means sunlight coming through the lenses and my brown patches are right under my eyes.

Nivealove · 29/07/2021 11:07

I gathered your olive-dark skin as you have a hyperpigmentation mark? People who are English-rose don't hyperpigment (there's always exceptions!) whereas people with skin of colour do..

I generally use mineral sun screen opposed to chemical as this is better for hyperpigmentation. I use the Matte Supergoop.

I use the face theory Vitamin C- not all types of Vitamin C are good and some are prone to oxidise. I would leave the vitamin C serum in the fridge to prolong its use.

I then use azelic acid serum and niacinimide-- can't spell the names!

Then top it off with a non fragrant moisturiser

StepAwayFromTheEcclesCakes · 29/07/2021 12:31

Superdrug tranexemic acid is sorting out my spotted hands quite well

Perriwinkles · 29/07/2021 15:43

Yeah I have those too. I'm not sure what's supposed to work. Tretinoin I suppose...I was on a prescription of it for acne and I think it helped reduce (but not eliminate) some sunspots. I have so many of them though that foundation is my only friend!

jazzandh · 29/07/2021 18:30

Well I have really bad melasma and I think it coincided with perimenopause. I tried loads of different basic preparations, and then asked my Dr for hydraquinone. He couldn't prescribe it, so I got some from Wish!!! Tried it carefully - but it has really worked! I apply it every other day in the evening and apply SPF50 in the day. Whilst I agree it's probably not great to get drugs from Turkey (!!!!) it really has worked - so Dermalogica (?) or a private consultant may well be the way to go.

Nivealove · 29/07/2021 19:39

I would advise against using hydraquinone as there is a risk of it bouncing back (aka the melasma... hyperpigmentation coming back worse).

popularinthe80s · 30/07/2021 07:56

@nivealove, you're dead right there.
Started with Dermatica (I know elsewhere they get good reviews, but this hasn't been my experience) - had no hyperpigmentation save 1 fingernail-sized spot.
They prescribed hydraquinone - I now have over 10 patches and they're growing. Checked in with my Dermatologist, she was shocked at the change.
I was sceptical of the whole 'don't use an online prescriber, go and see a real Derm' line but now I've learnt.
Obviously just my personal experience, I know others rave about them.
I know it's the Dermatica treatment because having a scientific bent of mind, I didn't use any on my forehead. Forehead still clear.
Now having to fork out for laser treatment. Dermatica has cost me hundreds of pounds.

Sorry folks, I honestly posted but it obviously hasn't updated. Hmm

Ended up opting for Olay Regenerist Luminous Anti-Ageing Skin Tone Perfecting Serum with Cetaphil SPF 50 for the day, and a Vit C with Hyaluronic Acid for night combined with L'Oréal night cream.

I've been doing it now for about 5 days and my skin looks better - I'd like to say that I can see a difference in the marks, but I think that might be wishful thinking.

In answer to a few queries, I'm as pale as milk but freckle badly - think redhead colouring without the red hair, and perimenopause tracks with the timing of the marks emerging.

I don't want to try anything too radical such as laser etc, but equally, if a couple of £15 serums will reduce the effect then I'm cracking on.

Isn't aging fun... Hmm

I am pretty fair and pale and over the last year developed some (IMO) bad hyperpigmentation.

I started trying the dermalogica brown spot fader but after 8 weeks no change.

I'm now trying this as its well reviewed online and I think it is actually working.

I'm also doing a weekly glycol peel (the No7 one), twice weekly micro roller and loads of Vit C serum. None or which are particularly expensive.

Does seem to be slowly shifting!

Blastandbollocks · 08/08/2021 10:50

Well, the spot on my jaw line is definitely fading after about a week. The one on my face not so much but then it is darker. Even if it's just reduced a bit I'll be happy.

Blastandbollocks That's good to hear you feel they are making a difference. This is a problem I am having at the moment and wondered if you had a link for the Olay Regenerist Luminous Anti-Ageing Skin Tone Perfecting Serum with Cetaphil SPF 50 please, as I cannot find it online?

Thank you

Blastandbollocks · 12/08/2021 13:46

Got mine on Amazon - here. This one doesn't have SPF but I use a seperate moisturiser.

Charlottemh · 12/08/2021 14:16

I had this really bad for a few years from when I was about 30 - dark patches on my forehead, nose and upper lip, whenever I tanned, despite using SPF.

I've literally kept my face completely out of the sun for 5 years - always wear a hat, glasses, SPF. This year, I let it tan a little bit (with SPF 50) and the dark patches are gone! I'm not sure how - maybe completely removing the skin from sun exposure for a prolonged period helps?

I do use Vit C, hyaluronic acid and retinol, but no idea if any of that helped or not. Maybe its a combination of all of the above plus keeping out of the sun.
