How do I ask for this at the hairdresser?

I came to the conclusion that my thick, unruly hair could never be short again and set about growing it about 6 months ago. It's now way past my shoulders but because it has no shape it just hangs like a heavy curtain. The problem is the last 8 times I've been to the hairdresser I've hated what they have done - usually they've cut off the ends and insisted on trimming the layers that have been a problem since they were cut in, essentially making the problem worse every time. Added to this I've had a nightmare with my fringe. Trying to grow it out, I got so fed up with feeling so ugly that I took the scissors to it myself. This latest time I sort of razored it using just the blade and I've realised this is what I need all through my hair - to thin it- but I don't know how to ask for this. So my question is, what do I ask for at the hairdressers to get them to only take the weight out and not trim the layers that I want to grow because they are already too short? And how do I get them to fix my fringe but following the line that I've cut in? I absolutely do not want any more hair added to the fringe. Essentially, where do I go to get a haircut that doesn't tick the usual boxes of taking an inch off all over, cutting the fringe in exactly the same way and a curly blowdry that seem to be unavoidable any time I go to the hairdresser?? Would appreciate any suggestions/advice!

Sounds like he’s given you a wolf cut

Henrytheehoover · 17/08/2021 12:50

You need long layers.

I go in and literally point to the length I want my hair to be and the length I want the layers to be.

Never heard that before but I like it! Grin

I did but he didn't account for the spring-up :(

Hi OP, I have extremely thick hair (the second thickest my hairdresser has ever dealt with). If you do make a special trip to London, I can recommend you a good (but not cheap) place that will do this for you. I ask my hairdresser to "take the weight out" and he knows what to do. He basically goes to the underneath layers with a pair of scissors and cuts in random places, my hair feels about half as heavy afterwards. I really recommend it!

spacecadet · 17/08/2021 13:51

Yes that's totally what I've got PhoenixFreesias although mine doesn't even look a bit cool like that one. Honestly, who would ask for that as a desired haircut unless they specified they wanted a sort of lead singer in a rock band look??

It’s the cut du jour.

It’s been a way for hairdressers to sort out the home cuts people have been giving themselves in various lockdowns. Especially the lockdown mullet a lot of teen/twenty somethings went for.

Very big with the youngsters- think Billy Eilish and Miles Cyrus. It’s definitely influenced by Debbie Harry/Christie Hynde/Joan Jett new wave rock chick. There was a lot of that around in the late nineties/early noughties too. This time it’s a bit shaggier, bit less wispy/feathery than then.

So I think in essence it’s just that 20 year fashion cycle thing.

spacecadet · 17/08/2021 14:54

I really want to post a photo but thats the 8th time I've tried now and it does the same thing every time - maybe it's a permissions thing. Anyway that's an interesting point about the wolf cut - but I would really expect a hairdresser to make it very clear that was what they were planning before inflicting that kind of haircut on someone unsuspecting as it's not an easy cut to grow out!
I'm very interested in the name of the recommended hairdresser in London as I'm definitely prepared to pay at this point. Was even considering putting myself forward for a Trinny London makeover just for the Josh Wood haircut!

spacecadet when I moved somewhere new I literally looked for women on the street who had hair vaguely similar to mine (very thick and dense, slightly wavy) and decent haircuts and stopped them, told them I liked their hair, and asked them where they got it cut. Took me about 3 tries but via that I was able to find a hairdresser who razor cuts my hair. She's not even expensive!

MasalaBeans · 18/08/2021 19:50

Try Lee at Boone and Last in London!

spacecadet · 18/08/2021 20:58

Right MasalaBeans that is a recommendation I might just follow up. Do you have hair similar to mine?

Yep, very thick hair, although mine is wavy rather than curly. Lee is great!
ChippyTea16 · 19/08/2021 03:35

Oh no sorry you don’t like your haircut OP that’s so devastating when that happens. I have very similar hair to you and I only go for a cut once a year now as I can’t face my hair being cut wrongly anymore (as I’ve moved so don’t have my regular hairdresser anymore).

Would it be worth splashing out and getting your hair chemically straightened? It won’t change the shape/length but makes it more manageable? I just find that having to blow dry and straighten or style my hair is such a faff. And I cannot get anyone to razor my hair any more which is rubbish as that’s the only thing that’s ever worked for me.

But yes to echo pps, take lots of pictures with you and book in for a consultation beforehand. Oh and just start being very firm - I had my hair cut a few weeks ago, I literally only wanted a trim as if got it to a length I really liked and she talked me into having 1.5 inches off. I know it doesn’t sound like a lot but my hair too bounces up and it just felt so short and like it’s going to take me ages to grow again now - I wish I’d been firm and said half an inch and no more!!

spacecadet · 20/08/2021 16:03

The thing is I don't want straight hair - in fact, my hair looks terrible straightened because of the shape of my head. I actually want to embrace the wave and want a haircut that does, but I need a hairdresser who understands that any length that goes to chin length or above when dry DOES NOT WORK on my hair! I have yet to find this elusive creature...

Completely sympathise as someone with thick curly hair but no haircut is so bad you should turn down invitations for months. Tie it up, wear a scarf, slick it down...whatever, it really doesn’t matter that much. It’s just hair! Maybe a Brazilian blowdry might help calm it?

spacecadet · 20/08/2021 18:42

It's perfectly calm when it's long - frizz only becomes a problem when it's cut too short. No blowdry is going to help atm. All I can do is wear it up and even then it's a pretty pathetic bun from the volume I used to have. I'm just furious that there's no consequence for the hairdresser - that his needs to have it look a certain way in that hour trumped mine who has to live with his vanity project for the next six months. It's about the only profession where the customer doesn't really have any power to change things which is why I think an online rating platform can't be too far away.

Moonface123 · 20/08/2021 19:16

I have long thick hair.
I just ask for long layers, it has a natural wave, but the layers do lay right without being straightened, so l can wear it just relaxed and natural. I have a long fringe which has gradual long layers, l love that it doesn't just hang like curtains, but that it has movement in it when l walk. l use a very small clip to put about a third of the fringe up for some height on top, then just have a few longer strands loose.
Maybe wear it up whist you grow the layers out ? Then ask for long layers.

spacecadet · 20/08/2021 19:36

Moonface123 I think I want your exact haircut. Can you post a picture - or give me the name of your salon??
