If you are an hourglass, what do you wear?

I am nearly 50, hourglass figure (always have been), between a UK size 8 and 10, 5.4. I'm stuck in a bit of a rut, wearing mostly fitted clothes because I don't like baggy stuff. The 'issue' is that I'm a 32G, meaning that anything that doesn't fit my waist, hangs off my boobs like a tent making me look very boxy. My go-to outfit is treggins with a fitted top and either heels (wedges or stiletto) or flat, knee-high boots. If I dress up I usually wear a pencil dress with heels. I wore bootcut jeans with boots for a few years but now I'm back in skinnies or straight jeans. What can I wear that is not frumpy/boxy but that's a break from what I've been wearing most of my life? Help please!

Jump suits or play suits, blazer dresses, skater dresses, any maxi dress that's a little fitted.

Athleisure I am very sporty so live in gym gear

I'm a very similar size and shape to you and I've been getting a lot of mileage out of anything paper-bag waisted: www.zara.com/uk/en/z1975-baggy-paperbag-jeans-p05862168.html?v1=124501190

I have these jeans in three colours - legs are baggy, but you can cinch in the waist so you don't look boxy. They're def not frumpy if worn with the right top.

Also, high waisted shorts with a drapey shirt or top. I buy a size up and get the waist tailored so they're not skin tight on my bum and thighs.

I find a fitted vest or spaghetti straps worn with a short cardi/bolero type top looks good. Seems to balance out my top half so the boobs don't look giant. Was wearing this in black today with some patterned shorts with a deep waistband. Similar to this picture. Worn with trainers.

Your figure sounds unbelievable! Lucky you!

I would recommend wrap dresses or slightly A line skirts with super fitted waist with a shallow v neck top

SirenSays · 28/07/2021 01:44

I'm a very similar figure but I'm 5'9. My wardrobe mostly consists of midi dresses, fitted maxis, v neck dresses, wrap dresses. Lots of pencil skirts, crop tops, paper bag shorts, high waisted trousers, jumpsuits and play suits and loads of gym gear.

I am almost the same size as you ( but finding my waist is currently trying to disappear for the first time)

I like jumpsuits, belted paper bag jeans with tucked tops in them and wrap dresses sometimes.

Try a body con sweater dress. They can look sporty or dressy depending on shoes and accessories and will accentuate your waist.

I’m a tall hourglass (5ft 7) and wear whatever I like but make sure I emphasise my waist as much as possible. Most days I’ll wear a fitted dress or jumpsuit or a jumper dress with a narrow belt. If I do wear jeans they’re high waisted and I try and balance with a top with some detail at the shoulders to balance me out.

obeabdabother · 29/07/2021 00:48

I'm an hourglass.
My figure looks best in dresses with a waist /belt, I look 'sexy'
But I'm fairly tomboyish and I prefer jeans and to follow fashion so I wear things that spark joy, fashionable or are comfortable rather than things that suit me.

Perriwinkles · 29/07/2021 07:33

@obeabdabother
That’s really interesting. My friend is the exact same as you. I dress to flatter my figure whereas she is much more aware of the outfit, fashion etc. It’s interesting how we can have different approaches to dressing. I often look at my friend and think: ‘with her figure, I’d wear XYZ’ but she probably looks at me and thinks: ‘with those jeans I’d wear XYZ.’

Applesarenice · 29/07/2021 07:37

Wrap dresses

icedancerlenny · 29/07/2021 07:55

Fit and flare dresses mostly.

So many ideas, thank you. I will review them this weekend and try to find a couple of pieces to experiment with. I must confess some of the ideas sound nice but are way out of my comfort zone!

@InTheNameOfAllThatIsHonest life's too short to always stick to the same, my advice is try loads of different things on as you can never tell how it will look until it's actually on you. With your figure you should be able to wear a lot of different styles and look good.

cherrypiepie · 29/07/2021 16:39

I'm a much larger hour glass and I'm loving wearing high waisted midi skirts with (mainly with elasticsted waisted so Snug on waist to cinch) with a tight t shirt and a belt.

Or similar with culottes.

Would this be too baggy for you?

WasThisSexist · 29/07/2021 16:46

I’m a tall hourglass (currently also a fat one due to lockdown weight gain) and recognise everything you’ve described. My failsafe additions to your list would be pencil skirts + blouses and jumpsuits. I only tried a jumpsuit a couple of years ago and didn’t think I’d be able to pull it off, but they are super flattering and I now own loads.

My other tip is to find a good seamstress and get things taken in at the waist - game changer.

EllaBlaire · 29/07/2021 16:48

Highwaisted jeans or paper bag trousers with top tucked in. Can either be a tight top or loose shirt as you’ll still get the shape from tucking it in.

huuuuunnnndderrricks · 29/07/2021 16:49

I'm the same size and shape but I'm 5 foot .. I think it's the easiest shape to dress . Just make sure whatever it is goes in at the waist !
