Is there a safe way to dye 13 year old’s hair?

My DD wants to dye her mousy hair dark brown.
From what I’ve read box dye (even semi) is a total no no for under 16’s due to allergy safety.

Is there a wash in one that would do the job and that is safe?

Hmm OP, I’ve never read that. My DD dyed her hair last summer at 13 with a semi permanent dye and had no problem. I would think as long as you do a patch test 24 hours in advance and there is no reaction it should be fine?

I’d be curious to see hairdressers’ replies.

My friends 13 year old colours her hair all the time - honestly it’s different every time I see her. She’s been fine with it - didn’t think there was/would be, an issue..?

Maybe try henna from lush?

Pens?

I use Adore on my dd, it's semi permanent with no peroxide, ammonia or alcohol. Works well on her brunette hair although it can wash out fairly quickly. There's a ton of colours to choose from too.

purplecat it may be that she uses safe dyes like Manic Panic, Directions etc. General permanent box dyes (like John Frieda, Loreal etc) are not sold to or intended for use on under 16s.

My ds has been bleaching (with box dye/bleaching kits) and colouring his hair (with crazy colours/manic panic) every summer since they were 12ish. Sometimes we've had to dye it back to his natural colour before school restarts. I always do a patch test and never had an issue. I've only ever seen on here that you shouldn't do it, and been called a terrible parent in the past for doing it. Hmm
DS2 did his once when he was still at primary school.

One of my best friends is a hairdresser and she said the worst thing that could happen (other than an allergic reaction, which we patch test for) would be damaged hair. Having boys isn't an issue as we can just shave it all off if needed.
