Best pick me up for tired, beginning to age skin?

Lizzie523 · 23/07/2021 22:03

I will be this 30 year and have noticed a change in my face recently.

I'm not sure what I thought would happen as I got older but although my face mainly looks the same I now have dark under eyes almost all the time/sockets more pronounced and a horizontal line on my forehead. I have fair skin and red hair so I try to remember SPF but forget sometimes.

I accept I'll never have my aged 21 skin again, but Id like to not be thinking 'ugh' whenever I look in the mirror. A random shopkeeper commented on how tired I look lately when I didn't wear concealer!

I feel my skin needs a real pick me up or revitalisation treatment. Can someone recommend treatments or products for sensitive skin?

There’s not all that much you can do about dark circles ultimately. Sleep helps.

Difficult to advise without knowing your daily routine at the moment, since it’s really just about being consistent. If I was your age and worried about ageing, I’d be starting on prescription skincare (Dermatica or Skin and Me).

For your forehead Superdrug collagen, it's much cheaper than most if he similar products. I'm a great fan of not mucking around with the skin and this just plumps up the skin making the lines less noticeable

You need to stick to your spf every day, factor 50, it's what every skin specialist/beautician has been advising me for the past few years. It's supposedly the best preventative treatment and cheapest anti aging option!

If you find one that fits into your routine that you wear every day without fail that's one of the best things you can do. And extend it down to your neck and decolletage as well.

I've just started using an led mask which has surprisingly had good effects so far, reduced crows feet and pigment.

I'm 43 and I use the ordinary caffine serum under my eyes and I've definitely noticed an improvement.
I also use the ordinary lactic (10%) each evening all over my face.
Every other week I use the AHA 30% peeling solution (also the ordinary!)

This is the best skincare routine I've ever had and the differences are noticeable.

I'm mid 30s. I started using tretinoin for spotty, uneven skin through Dermatica. My skin looks amazing. I will happily now just wear a bb cream on a night out. I'll keep up for long term aging.

What are you using at the moment?
I’m 38 and I found that my skin improved a lot after I changed from foaming to cream cleansers when I was about 30. Dry patches were gone and my skin started looking plumper and more glowy.

Agree with PP re sunscreen. Every single day. My favourite one at the moment is Nivea UV Face (sensitive or anti-shine versions). I normally avoid face products with alcohol, but these sunscreens have a minimal amount of alcohol only and don’t dry my skin out.

Vitamin C also helps and you will see an improvement in your skin in about a week if the product uses ascorbic acid (actual vit C) and extras like vit E and ferulic acid, rather than vit C derivatives like sodium ascorbate or others (which are better for very sensitive skin, but less effective overall). I like the one by SR Skincare, it’s super cheap and effective. It’s a light cream/lotion formula which is good for normal to dry skin. I tried others which are more liquid-y, like Garden of Wisdom, and they dried or irritated my skin a bit.

Using a humidifier at night also helped plump my skin and make it look and feel more hydrated.

Once you tackle the basics I’d look for stronger actives like prescription retinoids (Skin + Me or Dermatica sell them as PP mentioned).

Following as I'm exactly the same as you except 29 this year!

Agree with all the above, but will especially vit c serum! I use Super Facialist and my skin feels brighter and lovelier!

Bbub I was using the factor 50 Roche Posay every day for three years when I lived in Spain. I've been back in UK 2 years now and still use a 15 SPF but I've come out in more freckles than I ever had abroad this summer which shows it is not enough. I think Ive become lazy with it.

Can I ask what you are using? I am using cetaphil and simple toner. I have skin that is a bit oily and acne prone.

I had a quick look at their website. How does it work exactly? Is it possible to request a specific product like you mention here or is it tailored to you

@Lizzie523 I use a balm/cream/milky cleanser, am not faithful to any in particular, but I really like the ones by Ren (cleansing milk from their sensitive skin line, and hot cloth cleanser from the rosa centifolia line). Balm cleansers may be too rich if you have oily skin. Cetaphil is a good brand, so you may not need to change this step if it’s working for you.

I always remove cleansers with a wet cloth (superdrug bamboo cloth is my favourite). If my skin is feeling a bit oily I follow with a very gentle gel cleanser, like Ren’s rosa centifolia or a “top to toe” baby wash (Asda make an excellent one!).

I went through a few deluxe samples of high-end vitamin C (Sunday Riley, Omorovicza, Kiehl’s and others) and did not like any of them. I’m going back to the one from SR skincare that costs £5.

I don’t use toners at the moment, but I like to spritz rosewater after cleansing and before serum/moisturiser. I sometimes use a hydrating serum with hyaluronic acid, but most I’ve tried don’t seem to make much of a difference. Most moisturisers (and some vitamin C serums) contain hyaluronic acid these days anyway…

I like to use any gentle moisturiser that doesn’t make any ambitious claims. At the moment I’m using a night cream from Simple, or Versed gel cream moisturiser on really hot days (it’s great and should work well on oily skin). I really liked the texture of Drunk Elephant Protini but I don’t think it’s worth the £55 so I haven’t bought it again. I love E45 cream as an eye cream, face mask or even all-over-face cream if my skin is feeling dry, but I imagine it would make many people break out.

I also like using oils as moisturisers at night. Rosehip, squalane and jojoba are my favourites, but it’s really important to test on a small area of your face before going all out, to make sure it won’t break you out. If my skin is not feeling too dry, I use oils around my eye area only.

In terms of actives, I normally use tretinoin (prescription retinoid) 2-3 times a week, but I’m pregnant so am not using it for the time being. I use The Ordinary lactic acid 5% or 10% a few times a week - I think this makes a massive difference to the texture and look of my skin. The effect is similar to the old version of Sunday Riley Good Genes, which was made with lactic acid until a couple of years ago… now they changed the EU/UK version to glycolic acid and I can’t use it because glycolic irritates my skin too much.

Although I’m not oily (I took Accutane 10 years ago for cystic acne, it left my skin extremely dry for a couple of years and normal/dry-ish since then) I usually get spots on the sides of my face, some of them are the painful cyst type. Tretinoin helps prevent and treat them. Luckily during pregnancy I’ve not had much acne, but I’m missing the tretinoin anyway, and will go back on it as soon as I can.

It’s good to try changing one step at a time rather than anything at once, so you know what works and what may cause irritation, breakouts etc.

You upload your photo and tell them your main concern and what you would like. They often start low strength but reassess every 3 months.
It sounds expensive but a tube easily lasts 2 months so you can postpone a couple of months occasionally.
