Funky eyewear - where in the UK?

Rafferty11 · 23/07/2021 13:56

I need the old eyes testing again and I'm sure my prescription has changed. However I don't want yet another dull pair of glasses. Where can I go to get some funky specs?

I'm thinking block colour or different shape. Not sure I'm ready for Philippa Perry style although I do love her look.

Anyone sporting some nice glasses and willing to point me in the direction of some suppliers? Thank you 😊

You need the best independent optician in your area. You probably won't find what you are looking for at any of the High Street multiples.

limesoda · 23/07/2021 15:24

Yep my local optician is fab for this, and tells me exactly what will work for my face shape and prescription.

check out the Prue Leith collection by Ronit First .. I saw some in an opticians window when on holiday in Suffolk.. I'd love some but need to find a local optician to me which sells them ..

You could get your eyes tested and take your prescription away with you (say you'll be back later to choose) and then go elsewhere to buy. Or you can order funky frames online - they prompt you to download your script.

Rafferty11 · 23/07/2021 17:39

I have a really good optician but they have very limited frames. I was hoping if I could find some frames I like, they could source them or something similar and make up my glasses.

I'm reluctant to use a prescription and have them made up elsewhere as there is little recourse if there are any issues.

Will look at the Prue Leith collection - thank you 😊

My optician will send for frames I've seen online with no obligation for me to buy them. They can't always do it - I once asked them about some Cutler and Gross frames and they couldn't get them - but mostly they can. They're an independent. My most recent frames were from Oliver People and before that, Face a Face.

I really like Jai Kudo frames from Asda.

XingMing · 23/07/2021 20:31

Apart from my most recent, which were from a Danish company, I have liked Tom Dixon frames, Face a Face and Oliver Peoples (as Flo suggested). My favourites, years ago, came from a German company called Dieter Funk. I also have sunglasses, which were originally everyday specs that DH hated for some reason, from Paul et Joe that have won a lot of compliments from random people walking around town.

@Rafferty11, I suggest you try on all the frames you can, and just buy the ones you like best outright after considering it, and take them to your own optician to have them glazed and fitted. If your prescription is at all complex, you need to know that you have a guarantee. And as you are likely to be spending £500 on frames and lenses, or more, you need to like them a lot, enough to wear them all day everyday for two/three years.

My approach (feel free to ignore it) is to buy the most fashion-forward frame that I like on my face, even if it seems too edgy, and slightly uncomfortably fashionista. Usually, the world catches up with your vision 12-18 months later, so your glasses look hip first, then current, then mainstream, before you need a new prescription. But you do need aesthetic confidence in your own choices. Depending on how old you are (I am nearly 65), your choice is between visible and invisible. I prefer visible and opinionated!

Alain Mikli, LA Eyeworks both very avant garde brands but well made and often surprisingly flattering, but spendy; Ace and Tate, David Clulow more London oriented. I have a whole archive of frames filed if I can find it.

Rafferty11 · 23/07/2021 21:30

Thank you @XingMing - I'm now on the hunt!! Love your suggestions and particularly the LA Eyeworks. If you ever dig out that file I would be very interested !!
