So today I wore a dress. It was one I bought last year (but couldn't get into it and due to covid never returned it). It now fits brilliantly but my children pulled a face at me when I put it on.

I had compliments from friends today and I love it but wonder if my children just don't think of me as wearing a dress! My husband was also a bit meh about it too.

Of course I will just ignore them but it's just a bit depressing when you've made an effort and your family pull a face!

Did you feel good? dress for you, not your dh or your children, how you feel in what you have on is far more important than the opionions of small people who are entitled to none or a dh who is just a bit disconnected - start being 'you' again and shake them up a bit! Grin

I 've bought 3 dresses these past few weeks and never wore them as I was too self conscious. But I wore them this week to work because I was too hot and bothered to care about what other people thought I looked like. I was told I look summery, but no actual you look nice comments Hmm however I don't care . I like wafting about in dresses even though I'm still bloody hot in the them (all cotton). And I'm looking forward to wearing more dresses through to the winter with boots. Wear your dress proudly. I'm sure you looked lovely. Kids think anything different from the norm is weird and husbands, pah, I'm impressed yours even noticed you wore something different Grin

Perfect post!

Enjoy your dresses op. I bet you look lovely.

Carry on wearing them! Your DC and DH will get used to it, especially if you've not really work them before. But also, dress for yourself as others have said.

I always wear jeans or leggings and yearn for a dress. I buy them, try them on, think I look Ok and then take them off again and return them. I think it's just that I'm so used to seeing myself in jeans that I don't allow myself to get used to seeing myself wearing anything different.

Ridiculous really as I feel so envious of ladies I see floating around in cool swishy dresses whilst I'm hot and grumpy in jeans.

I have bought numerous dresses for weddings. Events etc which are all worn just once as I decide I hate them after wearing them

ILoveShula · 23/07/2021 07:59

Just do it. You get used to it quickly.

I was also a person who wore trousers a lot and felt like dresses were “dressed up” - for special events or for going “out out” with heels. It’s a bit easier nowadays because it’s popular to wear them with flats & trainers and the loose style means we don’t need to constrained by them. I think our friends and family just get used to us in a certain light and notice when we make changes. I’m usually in black, navy, grey so when I bought a sugar pink dress last year my DH & DD were very bemused “It’s very…. Pink!” I’ve since named the dress The Richmond Sausage dress and have never worn it. ( but Ive decided I will… it’s being altered at the moment). You just have to adopt a devil may care attitude. If other people can’t be arsed about clothes and style then that’s up to them but I’m into it and don’t want to restrict what I find fun because it doesn’t happen to fall into their definition of me. ( here’s hoping that sentence made sense)

Divebar2021 · 23/07/2021 09:14

There’s loads of T shirt dresses around - a much less formal style.

I want to hear more about the Richmond sausage dress!
Procrastatron · 23/07/2021 09:23

Wearing a dress for the first time is always a shock because it’s a block of colour or pattern when a lot of the time people wear muted top and bottom combos. I don’t pay much attention to my husband’s opinions because as lovely as he is he always plays it safe with clothes, decor, furniture etc…. “How about…grey?”
As the poster says above you will get used to seeing yourself in dresses if you keep wearing them.
Can you share what the dress is like?

Divebar2021 · 23/07/2021 09:40

@Procrastatron

It was one of those sale purchases you wonder about afterwards. I’m going to bloody rock it! Ha. Going to clash it with the Red bucket bag and a jaunty attitude.

OMG @Divebar2021 that dress is GORGEOUS and will look ace with the red bag!!!!!

Divebar2021 · 23/07/2021 09:51

@MrsFelicianoLopez

Ha ha. Thanks for saying that… it’s very out of my comfort zone but I’m done worrying about it. Nobody else cares what colour dress I wear.

Procrastatron · 23/07/2021 09:59

@Divebar2021 I LOVE it, especially with the bag. Where is the dress from?

Divebar2021 · 23/07/2021 12:11

@Procrastatron

Thank you. The dress was from Arket but last summer.

MrsFelicianoLopez · 23/07/2021 14:22

@Divebar2021 if you decide that you don’t want the dress after all, please let me know Grin

hopeishere · 23/07/2021 14:27
