I've worn a blouse that's 110 years old today

It's a very simple ecru blouse with white work and very fine lace and taupe thread

Anyone else wearing (very) old clothes? Grin

I also ironed all my silk nighties for the summer weather (most are 1920's/30's/40's) - some are too fragile for night sleeping as I'm menopausal and move around a lot but I use them as slips under dresses

sounds amazing!

not quite the same but all of our kids and a lot of their cousins were baptised in the same family heirloom baptism gown that was used for a few generations before.
I think it's about 120 y old, FIL was definitely baptised in it (he just turned 90) and so was his father.
I think it might even be another generation older, I'd have to ask MIL

my mum has some vintage clothing, but I don't own anything so old apart from my Singer sewing machine which is 106 years old

I've got loads of 20/30/40s but they're so so small!

Bath. Or your local museum, if it's from the area

Lovely! Two of my children were christened in the family christening gown (from early 1890s) but the oldest item I have worn was a 1930s velvet dress that was my grandmother's- although she never actually wore it out as her dad said it was too revealing!

What a beautiful thread. Really enjoying your acquisitions vicariously.

@Catabogus

Sorry to derail, but is there somewhere which accepts/preserves antique clothes - maybe a museum or something? I have a very old family wedding dress from around 1800 that I have no idea how to look after and would love to find a better home for. Thanks a lot!
@catalogue

There is an auction house called Kerry Taylor Auctions who hold regular sales of vintage/historic clothing and accessories so it might be worth checking with them I'd you want to sell.

www.kerrytaylorauctions.com

I've just looked and they are accepting consignments for their next auction which is 19 October.

Sorry @catabogus my predictive text went pearshaped! My last post was for you!

This is so lovely to read, how fantastic to wear such old garments. I collect old handbags, in fact I prefer them. Most range from late 50s to 70s but I have an exquisite ivory beaded clutch bag from the 30s that I treasure. I like imagining the women whose hands they've passed through and what their lives were like.

@CheerfulBunny me too! I love vintage evening bags in particular. I've got a lovely 1950's one which is white and silver with pearls which a friend carried as her 'something borrowed ' on her wedding day. And my gold Whiting & Davis bag always gets comments. Looking forward to being able to get out to vintage fairs etc to add to my collectionSmile

I’m too big to fit into vintage now but here’s my dd in her vintage 50s net frock she wore to prom. We had the paneling taken in as she is a 4-6 but the fabric hasn’t been cut so it can grow with her. She looked beautiful

Your dd absolutely does look beautiful Kenworthington.

What a lovely thread. It brought back memories of my best friend and I back in 1969 adapting a navy and white spotted silk dress of her grandma's so one of us had a blouse and the other a maxi skirt. That would have been Victorian, and had exquisite tiny pearl buttons.

I really wish now that I'd kept some of my mum and mother-in-law's 1940s clothes. But at least I have a couple of my early 80s party dresses with boned corset tops. Maybe one of the grandchildren will want to wear one at some stage. Smile
