I am awful with make up. I buy it and never use it. I only wear make up occasionally but would love to know what to wear for a natural day to day look and also some more vibrant colours for night time.

I have quite sallow skin and am a brunette with hazel eyes so any ideas or recommendations for colours or specifc products (with links if poss) would be most welcome.

I dont want to buy a lot as I wont use it all and dont want to spend a fortune but definitely need some help.

Go to a big department store, or even a large Boots, and get them to do a trial makeup on you. You really need to see what colours suit you.

If necessary, have a makeover with someone like MAC (they do lovely ones) and then look for similar products in Boots!

Agree with Lydia. Find a counter in a big department store that you like the look of and get them to do a trial and show you what they are using.

I like Bodyshop for makeup that isn't too full on and not very expensive.

The problem with beauty counters in department stores is the women who work on them tend to be make up addicts and can never seem to get to grips with the make up shy.

I'm not a big wearer of slap, but when I do I use a powder for my skin. this is what I use. I have a big powder brush and just dust a little bit over in a circular motion. It evens out the skin tone without looking like you are wearing anything.

If you are looking for a daytime look, I would suggest going for eyes only. Browns seem to suit anyone. Try a neutral shade on the lid and line your eyes using a darker shade of brown and using a brush like this The Body Shop do a good set of mini brushes including a great eyeliner one.

Finish it off with some mascara. I find the stuff always clumps, so I always comb the stuff after I've put it on with an old, clean mascara wand.

For a flash evening look, try, initially, glamming it up with funky eyeliner, then move on to something a bit more exotic when you feel braver.

if you're new to makeup I'd avoid 'vibrant' colours and do 'smokey' for evenings - can still be dramatic but less full-on.
