Hmmmm. I think I'm style-less. But where to start?

Comfort is no excuse for looking like one has no taste, according to a thread here. Immediately I feel faintly uneasy. Attired in combats and a hoodie, with a fat arse and a post-baby belly-apron, I'm wondering if there's a valid point there.

So, I've established that my wardrobe is severely limited, I'm scared of anything other than hoodies/jeans/gilets/long sleeve t-shirts/combats, I have no cash and I'm always going to be short and a little bit fat. Where to now? I would love to have style, flair, glamour - but all I have is an embarrassingly large selection of fleeces and frizzy hair .

Should I just ask for a really good pair of jeans for Christmas? Or a large paper bag?

Your not going to be able to change your whole image overnight, unless you win the lottery.
I live in comfy clothes, sod em, those that say such things about style and comfort. Go with what suits your lifestyle and you.
A good pair of jeans goes a long way - as does a good hair-do/cut/style.
I spend a fortune on my hair to outweigh the comfy type clothes. And it does seem to help.

My wardrobe consits of jeans, leggins and combats. Worn with plain hoodies mostly. Trainers/caterpillar boots and one pair of slouchy type ugg style boots. Wardrobe is built around comfort, cost and lifestyle with a int of fashion.

I dont let it bother me, i feel warm, comfortable and it doesnt matter if i get covered in dcs snot/dinner/glue or whatever.

I think you need to overhaul your self esteem first and then the rest will follow. Stop naming yourself chubby and short and think curvy and petite. Take a look at what other curvy petite women are wearing and try some stuff out.

self esteem!

I love my wobbly bits, I'm fine with my clothes but I'm sure the rest of the world think I'm a vagrant!

start by getting some key pieces that look decent and can be worn always, like a nice black cardi in which you can invest so it will be of good quality, and shirts to wear underneath which can be plain cotton, any color. buy some nice shoes, i'm sure you can find some at next.
try wearing dresses or skirts. you will always look much more feminine in these and the right dress can look good on any shape/height. wear them with tights and your new shoes from next. it is also much comfier than jeans or pants.
it helps to invest in your wardrobe as you will feel better about yourself when you are dressed in a pretty and well fitting outfit.

try morgan for handbags they have nice inexpensive bags. if you dont have any decent bag, put a wallet in your pocket and thats it.

invest in a nice jacket, when your wearing it it doesnt matter whats underneath.

Skirts and dresses in this weather?

No way, i feel the cold too much.

ChubbyScotsBurd · 26/11/2007 15:51

I love looking at pretty things - like the "help me find x item of clothing" threads, just never think I'd pull of posh clothes I guess. I think I need a pair of killer boots.

From a fellow chubby, scots bird. A good pair of jeans will serve you well, but a good pair of stretchy-pull on boots are a good idea, too, cos they're good for covering up calf/ankle issues and can be worn to great effect with skirts or trousers (and they're good and practical for the winter).

I know people are probably going to want to have me hung, drawn and quartered for this {involuntary duck}, but Trinny and Susannah do have good guide as to the best looks for people of our dimensions. Funnily enough, I was flicking through their book in bed last night.

I'd rethknk the fleeces TBH and get a nice fitted coat. They are really practical but v v unflattering IMO. Asking for a pair of nice jeans for Xmas sounds like a v good plan.

What about some layers to break up the long-sleeved tops - maybe a vest top with a cardi/sloppy v-necked top? I'm pretty clueless as well though - I live in tatty jeans and plain cotton tops. The one thing that I have splashed out on is a) a decent coat and b) nice boots.

dragonstitcher · 26/11/2007 15:53

I live in jeans and tye-dye t-shirts. Sod'em!

EffiePerine · 26/11/2007 15:53

(when not at work that is. Work outfit is smart trousers/skirt w plain top and jacket)

Mercy · 26/11/2007 15:58

Your wardrobe sounds very similar to mine CSB!

How would you like to look? Can you name someone whose style you like? Or do a link to some clothes you would like to wear?

Btw, 2 of hte most stylish people I know do not wear 'posh' - they get their clothes and accessories from markets, charity shops etc. And they both are into accessories.

ChubbyScotsBurd · 26/11/2007 16:03

Mmmmmmboots, yes. Work's half the problem, I don't need a smart outfit there so I'm just scruffy-casual everywhere!

are these a no no?

Very nice boots !

Buy them buy them !

Also second nice coat/mac .. instantly makes you look smarter

New jeans (dark if poss) new boots

Sorted

EffiePerine · 26/11/2007 16:24

Like the boots . Good for jeans and skirts. Re coat, try a fitted style in something other than black. I have a burgundy fitted leather jacket that cost a ridiculous amount (at the time) but has lasted me about 7 years.

Carnival · 26/11/2007 16:25

Perfect boots - get them.
