Please help me with my thinning hair! 😩

Hi,

So I'm another one who used to have gorgeous thick, glossy hair, but over the past few years, it's really really thinned. I used to need to use special hair clips for thick hair, as nothing would contain it. Now, when I bunch it all together in a pony tail, it's the diameter of a 10p piece Sad

Because my hair is quite coarse, it can still look reasonably thick, but I would say it's half the thickness it was 10 years ago. The loss has really accelerated over the past few years.

Every time I run my fingers through, I get anywhere between 2 and 10 hairs. When I brush before washing, it's loads. Same as I dry it. Hairs are all over the carpet and it's a constant battle to de hair.

Thinking about it though, I've always lost a lot of hair, but it always stayed thick, so never worried about it. I'm obviously not getting enough/any re growth. Although I do have a few baby hairs at the top of my head, thinking about it. I hope it's re growth and not breakage anyway!

I'm also getting loads of grey and desperately want to dye it, but terrified of this increasing the loss. I have very dark brown hair, so it's a harsh contrast.

I do have quite low ferritin levels, due to heavy periods, so assume it's that, but can't seem to top it up enough. Started at 10, think it's now low 20's, but I heard it's needs to be 70 plus for regrowth...so a long way to go. I take as much ferrous fumarate as I can tolerate - 1 tablet ever 2-3 days and eat more red meat, spinach and have started taking floradix the past 2 or 3 months, but no improvement. If anything, the loss seems to have accelerated the past few weeks.

I'm having a thyroid test next week, but is there anything I can do in the meantime?

TIA

My GP recommended taking a silica supplememt as well as iron. I found it really helped and it wasn't too long before I started to see regrowth. You can get it on its own but it's also in hair and nails multi vitamins.

@MoltonSilver, I actually do take a hair/skin/nails supplement too (Florisense) and have been for a few years now, but nothing seems to really help.

Ah, was just reading about silica and it's more about slowing hair loss than re growth, which I'd take right now!

Your hair/skin/nails supplement probably covers this, but biotin is needed for hair growth (vit B6?). You can also get shampoos/conditioners with biotin- the Moroccan oil brand do a biotin one it's in purple bottles (they're squat and wide, and maybe Opa, Ola sorry can't think of the name)
I use the conditioner and leave it in for about ten minutes then rinse out. My hair sounds similar- used to be ridiculously too much of it, now thinned loads...but I think for me it will be hormonal (peri age I'm afraid)
I lose loads every time I wash it Sad

@LostInTime, sorry you feel my pain. It really does suck doesn't it? The Florisense does contain biotin, but not a huge amount.

I do wonder if I'm peri actually. I'm only 37, but I know its not that uncommon.

I wouldn't have thought a shampoo and conditioner could do much tbh, but will do a bit of research.

I just looked in the bathroom- it's OGX, sorry! Blush

I take a vit B supplement daily, rather than the hair/skin/nails one, just because I thought I was low on B12 (apparently B12 deficiency can also lead to greying!) it's just the vitabiotics one.
Peri at 38 is not unheard of I'm afraid! The menopause/peri-menopause threads on MN are v good though if you wanted to read up.

37 sorry! Thanks
I'll blame fat fingers Wink

I'm going to see a trichologist later this week for the very same reason. I am late 50s so it could be attributed to post menopause but it came on so suddenly and my scalp feels tender a lot of the time. My hairdresser says there are plenty of new hairs growing but the texture has also changed suddenly to more frizzy than wavy. This has come on over the last 6 months. I seem to shed more than the dog ever did !

Iliketequilatoomuch · 20/07/2021 12:20

@LostInTime, yes, I know it's certainly not out the realms of possibility Sad

@TheDogsMother, sorry you're experiencing this too, but hopefully once your hormones settle down, hopefully the shedding will slow. How much are you losing?

@Iliketequilatoomuch
I'm not sure if it is hormone related as it came on so suddenly and my periods stopped at least 5 years ago. I don't know exactly how much I am losing but it is absolutely everywhere ! It's longer than it used to be so that would account for it looking like more but its definitely thinned at the scalp. I really hope the trichologist has some ideas.
