Hair experts - toner advice for brassy brown hair

Are there any toners or blue shampoo that work on medium to darker hair? The only one I've found is Josh Wood gloss but it makes your hair reeeally dark (almost black) which is too ageing for me. It does tone away the red (it has green tones) but is way to dark. The lower half of my hair is brassy due to his total box dyes. My natural hair is cool medium to dark brown but the lower half is brassy reddish brown which doesn't suit me.

Is there a toner or shampoo that would work to retain the level of the hair as medium brown as opposed to making it darkest brown?

Thanks

I find the L’Oréal purple shampoo is very good for when my natural (hated) warmth starts to show through my coloured hair. My hairdresser also rated it for brunettes.

Hmmm, but purple is for blonde no? Blue is for orange and green for red. Pretty sure purple won't touch dark brown?

Don't have any advice (sorry). But following with interest, as I have a similar issue, balayage highlights on dark brown hair looking a little brassy.

Which Josh Wood gloss have you tried? My natural hair is a super dark brown, so the level of darkness might not be an issue for me. Also how many washes did it last if your hair before fading?

Matrix dark envy mask is good for brassy brunettes. It’s green. My hair has some lighter brown in it so I need to be careful with the time I leave it on for as it’s gone green before! But it sorts out the brass. It only lasts one or two washes on me though which isn’t ideal.

Someone on here recommended the dark envy mask, I can honestly say it’s awesome

@cannaethink is it very dark?

Yeah that's the problem with toners- they are v temporary. Sad

When I had box dyed dark hair it built up over time. If I were you I'd remove the colour using Colour B4 and then do a Clairol Nice n Easy semi permanent brown dye with Ash in it (watch out as I find they go darker than the box on me so I used their shade 'light Ash brown' which was actually more of a medium Ash brown. Not a hairdresser but worked well for me.

cannaethink · 15/07/2021 12:48

@KentishyTown no, it’s not, I don’t think it really darkens it much, more just gets rid of the red.

Hopeislost · 15/07/2021 13:17

I agree with @Bluecheck679 about removing the colour buildup if you want a more permanent solution.

If you want to use box dyes afterwards, the L'Oréal Excellence Cool Creme range is good for ashy colours. But (seemingly like all box dyes) they come out a bit dark, so go a shade lighter than they say.

KentishyTown · 15/07/2021 15:22

@SummaLuvin it's the Josh Wood gloss toner. There's only one - in cool brown. But it's darrrk.

I use Aveda Blue Amalva to get rid of brassy tones in my dark hair.

Livinthedream84 · 15/07/2021 16:18

I tried the dark envy mask and it turned my hair green! I only left it in for a bit too :(. Be really careful especially if you have any ashy bits in your hair it really clings lol
