Bit of advice (hairdresser by trade)if you are going to cut it youself take off less than you think because you can always take off more and most fringes jump up quite a bit when cut.

splishsplosh · 25/11/2007 17:04

I'm always doing it, because I suddenly get to a stage when i think how badly it needs doing, I can't wait another minute and decide to tackle it there and then.
Sometimes I gather it together, like a little forehead ponytail, and twist it, then snip the bottom end off. That seems to work quite well... but I am probably fooling myself, because ebery time I actually drag myself along to the hairdressers he always asks me if I've been having a go at it myself again, and reminds me that they do free fringe cutting anytime

HairyIrene · 25/11/2007 17:06

are you on the sherry?
i wouldnt dare cut my own fringe (when i had one)..

its not even one of those 'seemed like a good idea at the time' ideas

get a steady-handed trusted pal to help at least

Iota · 25/11/2007 17:06

do you ever watch the stylist cut your fringe?

I do mine like it's done at the salon

wet hair
comb down, clip rest of hair away in hair clip
grip a small section of hair between index and middle finger
trim with sharp scissors
repeat with next section of hair.

I do have very fine straight hair though, so it's an easy job

southeastastra · 25/11/2007 17:06

ooh hairdresser. do i do it wet and cut straight across?

OP posts:
Iota · 25/11/2007 17:08

agree with purpule pillow - I take off less than a quarter of an inch

Oblomov · 25/11/2007 17:13

My hairdresser cut my fringe for FREE, inbetween salon visits. I thought that was the norm ?
You are all nutters for even considering cutting your own fringe !

southeastastra · 25/11/2007 17:14

the stylist always pulls it upwards. maybe i'll just try a teeny bit.

lol hairyirene

HairyIrene, they MUST be on the sherry

Iota · 25/11/2007 17:18

Oblomov -it's a lot quicker to snip a bit of yourself than trailing over to the salon

Iota · 25/11/2007 17:20

off not of

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 25/11/2007 17:22

A tip found out the hard way. Don't snip your fringe while looking up at it. This raises your eyebrows and makes you cut your fringe a lot shorter than it needs to be

southeastastra · 25/11/2007 17:26

what scissors do you use?

OP posts:
Oblomov · 25/11/2007 18:07

Iota, only if you are traipsing, up to your local London Toni and guy. If you go all of walkeable distance to your local salon, not a problem. There are about 30 in a 5-10 mile vicinity from my house, - actually, one of those includes a Toni&Guy

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 25/11/2007 18:09

Scissors with long blades are the best. I think I got a pair out of dp's clipper set. Boots sell hairdressing scissors.

PurplePillow · 25/11/2007 18:12

Easist way is to comb fringe down and gently hold it between fingers without pulling it and carefully cut a couple of mm at a time
Good luck
Would offer to do it for you but probably too far away lol

woodenchair · 25/11/2007 18:30

Pull your fringe tight to the front to the length you want it. If you then cut it straight across it ends up longer at the sides than in the middle iyswim.

It's a bit more forgiving too as it's not straight across. I used to do it with the kitchen scissors but have now bought my own proper grown up hairdressing ones.

Don't do it!

Columbia · 25/11/2007 18:48

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

you should see what I did to mine last week

themoon66 · 25/11/2007 18:52

I cut mine all the time.

I wet it then comb it up with an old nit comb of DS's. This holds it steady so I can snip away gradually at it.

Seems to look ok.

Columbia · 25/11/2007 18:59
