Is this experience at the hairdressers normal?

Just wondering if I need to manage my expectations better or if I’m being ripped off a bit. Sorry for the rant- no one else cares to listen and I need one! Looking at the pics I think it looks slightly better on camera- it looks patchy in places when I put it up in a ponytail which I don’t think I’ve captured.

I went to the same hairdressers for over 6 years, however lockdown and having very young children meant that it was getting harder and harder to drive to my nearest city. Early this year I started going to a more local hairdressers. The place has some good reviews and seems very busy. However, this is where my problem lies.

I’ve been about 5/6 times now and It’s almost like the hairdressers is too busy to pay me full attention and each time I feel almost like a nuisance or imposition. Bearing in mind I usually have to get childcare for my children- we don’t have family around and so it’s hard for me to have any time to myself for a few hours.

At first I just attributed it to lockdown having just lifted and them obviously having a huge backlog but now it seems like that’s just how it is. At my old hairdressers, I would go in and have the same woman do my hair right up until she took payment from me- occasionally someone else would wash or dry or even more occasionally (I.e on a Saturday someone else might cut). However, at this place at least 3 different people will work on my hair/go through the process with me.

Every time I’ve been I’ve had an apprentice or trainee work on my hair (e.g, doing part of the dye or blending). The first few times I thought fair enough- they need to learn somehow- but I’ve still had to pay the full extortionate price each time (usually well over £100) and it’s been every single time!

Sometimes I’ve gone in and it’s been so busy and hectic no one has even paused to ask what I wanted, they’ve just gone straight in with prepping the dye/the highlights as - even though I said I wasn’t sure over the phone when booking- They’d put me in for a full head of highlights (this was after the third lockdown so I had substantial root growth). I literally didn’t even get time to speak.

The last time I went felt like the last straw. The hairdresser who started my hair was over 20 minutes late (don’t want to be too outing but it wasn’t because of an emergency, it was a non- reason). I was told this as I turned up for my appointment and I had to just sit in the chair and wait for her to get back. Bearing in mind I’d had to pay to have my children in nursery for the afternoon so I could attend the appointment. An experienced hairdresser foiled my hair and then an apprentice added bleach and blender to my roots, washed and dried- I still paid £110. I was there for over 4 hours in total (for a full head of highlights and root blending I think), the process always seems to take ages as I’m left for large chunks of time while they work on other people’s hair.

It’s been a week and I don’t even think the job is very good? There are lots of clear lines near the top of my head and it doesn’t seem all that well blended. My hair is now probably in the worst condition it’s ever been in- but I appreciate that’s probably just the bleach.

Are my expectations unrealistic?? Especially at the moment given the last year? Happy to be told they are as I can struggle with wanting things to be perfect. Or is this a bit of a crappy job?

Definitely not normal! When I go my hairdresser spends 3 hours just with me if I have a full head. She puts on the toner as well and makes sure everything is ok before the backwash girl does my Olaplex and rinses etc.

You are paying good money, I’d find another hairdresser who values your custom!

MaverickDanger · 13/07/2021 11:32

This happens with my hairdresser sometimes if I’ve booked the appointment online or if someone else books in - the system assumes certain things ie highlights will take a certain amount of time & it will then show a space for someone else to book in for a cut with your hairdresser in the “gap”. Now, if your hair processes quickly, it isn’t really a gap, but they can’t just cancel the other booking.

What she’s also found is after lockdown, people are wanting radical changes but still booking the same appointment length, so everyone is running over.

Carelessdresser · 13/07/2021 11:44

@MaverickDanger that’s interesting! I’ve been booking weeks/months in advance (at the end of my appointment) but it feels like she is too busy for my custom really. I don’t tend to ask for massive changes- I’ve been having a full/half head of blonde highlights for the last 10 years pretty much.

@ThankYouVeryMuchGerry thanks for your perspective! I think I’ve answered my own question a bit just by writing this post.

What do people think of the dye job- is this ok? Or should it be better?

I think your hair looks nice but you’re rightfully peeved after your experience. I wouldn’t be going back.

TableNiner · 13/07/2021 19:38

I guess they are desperately trying to maximise their income after COVID which is their prerogative but I wouldn’t be going back. 4 hours is too long. Is it a small town where this is the only place people can go locally so there’s a lot of business and a captive audience?

Oblomov21 · 13/07/2021 19:40

That is poor!

HelloDulling · 13/07/2021 19:43

My hair takes 4 hours each time, so I’m not sure that’s such an issue, but you’re not happy with the result, or feeling relaxed and happy while you are there, so I’d go elsewhere. Your hair looks nice, the colour is lovely, but if you don’t like it make a change.

Clementine8 · 13/07/2021 19:44

If it was my hair i would go back and ask them to fix it

Twickerhun · 13/07/2021 19:49

I’d not be happy with that experience and result.
I’ve found it pretty hard to find a decent hairdresser - too many bad highlight jobs.

I also have small kids and totally get how precious time is and how frustrating it is to juggle everything to have time to get your hair done. Sympathies. I’d be going somewhere else next if I could.

theotherfossilsister · 13/07/2021 19:51

It's a lovely ashy blonde, but I think the roots aren't great as it's been done so recently.

dementedpixie · 13/07/2021 19:54

The roots are bad if you went for a full head of highlights.

You need to go back and get the root patches fixes. Lovely colour but needs redone on those parts. I'd get it fixed then find a new hairdressers for next time.
Popcornbetty · 13/07/2021 20:11

Sorry didn't mean to quote a pp in my response Confused

SparkyBlue · 13/07/2021 20:28

I'd look elsewhere OP as it's not a nice relaxing experience. I've young DC as well so I 100% understand how difficult it is to fit in the time for a visit to a salon. I've to co ordinate it with DH work schedule and I enjoy the couple of child free hours. I've found a new hairdresser who is fab and I keep getting compliments on my colour which is the first time in years that that's happened so Im delighted with myself

itcouldhave · 13/07/2021 20:28

I would not be happy with that experience and agree with other posters that they need to redo your roots. My hairdresser is really popular so they’re always busy but they always ask what you want and take the time to discuss any tweaks. You have the same person from start to finish too, unless someone else has run over and they rejig drying/styling but as it’s a small salon, I know them all and they’re all excellent.

thecatfromjapan · 13/07/2021 20:45

Not normal here, either.

I've been twice since lockdown ended. Each time, they've clearly been busy (lots of staff and clients) but I felt really looked after. Indeed, I felt they were delighted to see customers again (me included).

Honestly, so many hairdressers are so good at their jobs, and so pleased to see people again - take yourself to somewhere like that!

I loved going back to the hairdresser. It was just a lovely experience. I really hope you find somewhere that makes you feel the way I was made to feel. 💐)

MassDebate · 14/07/2021 13:24

There are very obvious lines from the foils - it’s a poor job. I wouldn’t go there again in your position - for that money it should be far better. The time isn’t that unreasonable though - I’m often at the hairdresser for 3 hours for a half head as I need a lot of foils. The quality of the colour job is the real issue.

MouldyPotato · 14/07/2021 13:33

You can see the lines, the last photo in particular i wouldn't be happy with after a week.

I've had 2 people going my hair before but that's becuase they always fit someone else in as there's a lot of waiting around with colour. Usually it's the one person. Your experience doesn't sound great, one or two of those things as a one off would be ok and only if happy with result of hair. I wouldn't not be happy with them starting to apply it before you've even spoken to them. I'd fine somewhere else.

Lakeshore6 · 14/07/2021 13:42

First of all I would say whilst an apprentice is learning, they are generally left with the root retouches and basic applications that don’t take long. (Normally…) I wouldn’t expect to pay less for that- it’s not the most technical skill.

As an apprentice sometimes I was put on the floor the odd time to do highlights, and I kept being requested after that because I got them so close to the roots. Try not to assume an apprentice won’t do as good a job - they don’t have to rush to the next client like your stylist does, and the apprentice is probably putting their heart and soul into your hair.

Did you say the experienced hairdresser did the foils? Then this isn’t on. That’s sloppy.

ExConstance · 14/07/2021 13:43

I've been having my hair coloured with a mixture of 3 colours for high and lowlights the same for years Each time I go my hairdresser talks me through what I want. Sometimes I want it a little darker in winter and lighter in the summer. Only when we have had the "consultation" does she mix the colours. I get her undivided attention for the time I'm there and due to covid there will be a gap before the next person arrives. Pre-covid she would sometimes do another cut - often a male customer as they are quicker- while my colour took.
Going to the hairdressers, especially if it is for 3 or 4 hours, should be a relaxing and enjo;yable experience.

ZenNudist · 14/07/2021 13:44

I'd agree it's patchy where you lift your hair. I would not go back definitely. You could ask them to fix it. It's such a hassle. It looks good in the first picture you posted.

I used to go to salon and always got messed about like you describe. The more expensive the salon the worse they were for getting colour "technicians" to do the colour and the stylist would do consult cut and blow. I got fed up of them sticking me at the backwash for ages claiming a "treatment " (that costs more money).

But colour takes ages so the time you described isn't too bad.

I just voted with my feet if I'd been left for too long unnecessarily. It was exhausting at some salons being shoved back and forth.

UrgentExit · 14/07/2021 13:47

It's not the time or moving between clients in the waiting period with colour, it's the end result and the way the experience made you feel.

I'd been going to my salon for many years and had already begun to feel on a conveyor belt and that the stylist didn't really listen particularly with regard to my colour. I've voted with my feet and had a far superior appointment where I felt well considered and welcome and got a great end result.

I really wouldn't be happy with the roots and would speak to them about fixing it.

BestestBrownies · 14/07/2021 13:57

It does look a really patchy/poor job for £100+ sorry. I echo pp and say vote with your feet. Similar happened to me the last time I used a salon (piss-poor job, overpriced, took forever and disinterested staff).

I have since found a lovely mobile hairdresser who comes to my house at my convenience, does an amazing job and charges less than half the price of the salon
