Does it matter if you don’t get your haircut?

Daft question probably but I’ve got it in my head that you should get your hair cut fairly regularly so it looks and stays healthy. I’ve not had my haircut for about 18 mths - it’s fairly long but not crazy long. It’s fine and a bit wavy and limp. I can’t be bothered getting it cut really or spending the money as I’d just get it trimmed for the above reason. Is that an urban myth or true? If I want to keep it long, will I regret not keeping it trimmed?
I’m not after an immaculately styled look in life but don’t want to look like some crazy haired person either :)

Get this from Amazon and you can do it yourself!

I'm like you OP, really can't be bothered going to the hairdresser just for a trim. In lockdown I learned to trim and layer my own hair, and I'm never going back to a salon ever! Like a PP said, look for YouTube tutorials, it's really easy. And this is from someone who has just enough styling skills to do a ponytail...

BastardMonkfish · 12/07/2021 09:32

Gave myself a Mumsnet haircut last night!

TableNiner · 12/07/2021 09:47

I think if you have long hair it doesn't need cutting so much. I used to go twice a year back when my hair was close to my bum. But I have a long face and ageing makes it longer so I have to have a shorter cut which needs cutting regularly as obviously hair grows...

Oldraver · 12/07/2021 09:53

I've not been to a hairdresser for 19 odd years, always snip it myself when I get fed up of it

Fuckinellitsme · 12/07/2021 10:41

I cut my own hair - no way am I going to pay £40 for someone to take a couple of cm off it when I can do to myself for free. If you just want to trim the ends OP it's the easiest thing in the world - there are loads of YouTube tutorials but I just put it into a low ponytail, drag the bobble to about 2cm from the end of my hair and chop. Sometimes I level off the sides, sometimes I leave it (cutting it this way leaves the front slightly longer, so it looks like a slightly inverted long bob).

I do have quite thick, wavy hair though which probably hides any mistakes!

I've been cutting my own hair for the last three years, it's straight with front layers and a fringe, just past shoulders in length, I wish I had done it years ago, the money I have wasted and nearly always coming home not happy how it was cut, they always seems to put too many layers in and cut to much off.

LalalalalalaLand123 · 13/07/2021 18:37

I had a graduated bob with blunt ends for years and years, and a hairdresser who did a lovely job on it, I got complimented a lot on my hair. Then for reasons known only to her, she started adding more layers and 'feathering' the ends. It looked awful, my hair is thin enough to begin with. The next time I said 'please do it like in the past, fewer layers and NO feathering'. But she still feathered; and the next time. So I stopped going. Couldn't be assed to find a new hairdresser, then covid came along - so it's been easily 3 years since I got a haircut. It's long now and I just trim the ends myself. I like it!

I do my own, I hate other people touching my head.

Lira91 · 13/07/2021 18:51

It probably depends on your hair. DM has always been low maintenance with her hair, she'd slather her hair with amla hair oil once a week maybe half an hour before washing her hair, and use bog standard shampoo. She had the most luscious long hair all the way down to her waist and would just trim it herself whenever she'd remember! So I just follow suit although I'm a bit more particular about the shampoo and conditioner that I use, but I also just trim and layer my own hair at home :)

Zipperdidoodaa · 13/07/2021 19:33

My friend never has her hair cut. I think only once since I've known her (30yrs) has she ever been to the hairdressers. She tips her head forward and trims it herself - she has the loveliest hair!

I trim my hair myself, long hair is quite easy to trim and the length hides any wonkiness! I've done it for about 15 years now as it seems silly to pay someone to cut an inch off the ends when I can do it myself !

twolittleboysonetiredmum · 13/07/2021 21:41

Thanks all, I am convinced! Husband has also said he’s happy to do it so saves me being totally cack handed too :)

Ok now I want to know how to cut my own hair. It’s poker straight, fine but loads of it.

TiddleTaddleTat · 13/07/2021 21:50

I got a pair of hairdressing scissors over lockdown and am now resident hairdresser. Couple of YouTube videos later and I don't think I need to visit a proper hairdresser again. Just simple taking off W couple of inches of dry ends. It's easy.

Manzanilla55 · 14/07/2021 10:59

I wear a fringe and find although I trim it myself every three weeks ie just the fringe it still needs reshaping every three months ideally.

Metabigot · 14/07/2021 13:59

I tend to get mine cut extra short and let it grow out so I'm only at the hairdressers every 3 months or so, this strategy worked well in lockdown anyway

happymummy12345 · 25/07/2021 02:54

It’s fine. I don't get my hair done. The last time I had my hair professionally washed trimmed and styled was august 2012, the day before my mums wedding.
I only ever went to the same place and had it done by the same lady. She knew exactly what I wanted and liked (I always had exactly the same thing every time). She used to say "usual"? And I'd say "yes". I trusted her 100%.
I moved 250 miles away in 2013 and never bothered to try anyone else, especially for a cut or trim. Even when I got married I didn't have my hair professionally done as the hairdresser didn't turn up on the day as she 'couldn't be bothered', her exact words.
I first took my son to a local barber who came highly recommended in 2018. She's brilliant. She can cut ladies hair but she doesn't usually do it, only occasionally for certain people, and it's only a basic dry cut or trim. She did mine a few days after she did my sons hair for his birthday in September 2018. So I went 6 years without having anything at all done to my hair professionally. She was brilliant and wasn't too scissor happy like some can be. I got it trimmed again a year later again around my sons birthday in September 2019. We joked that I'd have a trim once a year. With everything that happened I haven't Ben since September 2019 and won't be going for ages yet. It doesn't bother me at all as I don't need to go. I wash and condition it myself, leave it to dry naturally if I can, and I straighten it myself (I have what I call 3 levels of straightening, 1 where it's a very quick going over while it's in a ponytail to take the frizz out. 2 where I section it and do it but quicker and not as carefully or as good, that's if I'll be putting it up after. And 3 where I do it properly with proper tiny sections and I take my time, like a hairdresser would. That's if I'm leaving it down).

RubyGoat · 25/07/2021 03:18

If you don't use heat or box dyes on it, don't over-wash it, make an effort to keep the mid lengths & ends adequately moisturised & hydrated, & if it's very long, wear it up in a bun or something a lot of the time, there's no real need to cut it regularly. I used to have very long hair in my teens & 20s. I usually went 4 or 5 years between cuts, virtually no split ends. I always wore it up in a bun or plait, & allowed it to dry naturally. DD has similar hair - I've only ever used a hairdryer on her twice (she's 9) & her hair used to be knee length, thick & undamaged right to the end. Chopped it off at shoulder length a couple of years ago & it's already nearly at her waist again. She's had 3 cuts/trims in her life. (Hates the scissors!)

I last cut my hair in February last year. No split ends yet. It doesn't grow as fast as DD's any more though, sadly. And it's going grey now!
