Winter wedding - what to wear?

Thunderpants · 24/11/2007 21:52

I mostly, well always, wear jeans and t-shirts since becoming a full-timer mother and overweight. As I rarely go anywhere that requires smart clothes, I am completly out of touch with what's in at the moment. Desperately need some help - can anyone come up with something suitable for a post-Christmas wedding, for a size 18 top (big norks) and size 16 bottom half. Don't want to wear heels as DP is the same height as me, and I hate looming over him! thanks so much in advance for any advice/links at all.

More info please - such as, what sort of wedding? Cold church, warm hotel? How formal? Day/evening? Budget ?

pinkspottywellies · 24/11/2007 22:00

What colours do you like? Would you wear a dress or prefer trousers? Will you wear a hat? What kind of budget do you have?

Jenkeywoo · 24/11/2007 22:02

I got married on 28th December and most people wore normal wedding fodder with nice cosy pashminas and the like. Lots of skirt suits with jackets etc. There wasn't too much time outside anyway. As it was winter a couple of women wore black dresses which looked ok although I'm not keen on black for weddings myself.

JackieNo · 24/11/2007 22:05

If you think you'll need something warm to wear, how about a glamorous coat like this? Maybe some wide legged trousers, and a glam top? How are your arms? Happy to show them off or do you prefer sleeves?

Thunderpants · 24/11/2007 22:38

sorry - got caught on the phone! I do like black and generally am not a fan of bright colours - prefer khakis/browns that type of thing. Budget probably up to £100 if it's something I would wear again. I have some long black suede boots or "mary-jane" type shoes. It's a church wedding with usualy reception/evening do. I'm thinking maybe long black skirt, fitted jacket and some sort of coloured top. Probably not a hat, as it's not a posh do (at least I don't think it is!). think I'd rather go for a skirt than trousers, although quite like cropped trousers. Does that help? Looking forward to your suggestions.

Jackie - that Wrap website has some lovely things, but all a bit too pricey unfortunately! Or am I that out of touch?

pinkspottywellies · 24/11/2007 22:42

How about a dress?

JackieNo · 24/11/2007 22:46

No - you're right, Wrap is quite pricey, for some things, at least.

Thunderpants · 24/11/2007 22:50

I'd love a dress, but just feel too fat to wear one. 5 years ago, when I was a size 12 I had some gorgeous dresses, but just don't have the confidence to show off arms and flabby bits. have just been looking at another thread like this one and there seem to be lots of suggestions for wrap dresses with boots - the longer sleeves would be a bonus and I already have the boots, so anyone come across any nice ones? don't particularly like the 70s style big garish patterns that lots of them seem to be. note to self - stop beng so bl88dy fussy

Or next have a nice black trouser suit.

JackieNo · 24/11/2007 22:54

Yes, I agree a wrap dress should work well for you - any of the ones (especially the first 3) here take your fancy?

pinkspottywellies · 24/11/2007 22:56

I'm guessing this would be a bit off colour wise?

JackieNo · 24/11/2007 22:57

Or something like this could look good (also comes in black if you're not keen on the magenta). that draping detail should be v flattering if you're not keen on the tummy area.

pinkspottywellies · 24/11/2007 23:00

This one is similar to Jackie's last one!

Thunderpants · 24/11/2007 23:05

I think the last one is probably the one I like best pinkspotty. Would I wear shoes or boots, thick tights or thin? and what sort of bling? (i believe that's what the young people call it these days ). Thanks for all the suggestions everyone - I think the wrap dress is going to be the answer.

pinkspottywellies · 24/11/2007 23:06

Just had to add one

pinkspottywellies · 24/11/2007 23:09

Are you thinking black tights? I would think thin tights so you don't look like solid black all over! What kind of jewellery do you have? I would think a plain gold/silver pendant would look nice.

Thunderpants · 24/11/2007 23:10

Actually I like that m&s one pinkspots - please feel free to add any more as you seem to be on my wavelength!

Thunderpants · 24/11/2007 23:14

Yes, I was thinking solid chunky silver earrings and a simple but chunky silver pendant. I find it hard to wear delicate jewellery as I think it makes me look fatter - I know that probably sounds daft, but the chunkier stuff just seems to look better. Much the same reason I was thinking of wearing boots rather than shoes, as I don't do dainty very well. Have some lovely silver bangles, so might throw on 2 or 3 of them (and then try not to jangle too much during the service lol)

thunder saw this the other day and just want to say I think the black wrap dress is fab, would look v sexy with high heeled boots. Re jewellery agree re the chunky and sparkly but I have a thing against necklace and earrings together...dunno why!

I would go for fab stylish earrings and chunky bracelets and bangles and just leave the cleavage plain with a great bra underneath...understated and very glam!

What about hair and make-up?

Am also going to a winter wedding, so far am wearing a red dress from Zara and a black( 3/4 sleeve) swing coat from a sale. Just found some black velvet long gloves for 8 euros in Bershka! Sounds dodgy but I think it will work!!! Don't know what jewellery yet

Thunderpants · 26/11/2007 16:43

Ooh that sounds lovely! Have so far bought a green wrap dress from ebay for a fiver, ordered two from grattan (one black, one plum), just to see what looks best. Was thinking, like you, that I'd rather have a coloured dress and black jacket, rather than the other way around. Like the idea of no necklace - I agree it can look cluttered. I tend not to wear earrings if my my hair is down for the same reason. Do you think I could do flat boots or would that make it look frumpy?

OP posts:
Thunderpants · 26/11/2007 17:02

Also, does anyone know of any industrial-strength undergarment that actually looks attractive? (we are staying overnight you know ). An all in one type thing.....

OP posts:
iwantacoolchristmasnickname · 26/11/2007 18:47

depends how tall you are, i suppose (or, after all, what YOU feel good in!!)

I'm titchy so always feel better in high heels.

when you say undergarmet, do you mean a body for holding all the bits in the right places (am planning to buy one of those myself as 3 children has wrecked my tum) or nightwear?

MrsArchieTheInventor · 26/11/2007 18:56

How about something from these selection of dresses

JackieNo · 26/11/2007 18:58

Bravissimo?
