Thick course frizzy hair. Help needed!

Hello, I have thick, very course, very frizzy hair. What do people recommend to control it? I am rubbish with hair and make up etc and my hair doesn't look or feel nice. I usually just wash with whatever shampoo and conditioner I'd on offer when I shop, air dry and French plait it. (I know I can't use herbal essence or pantene as it irritates my scalp) No products or heat, infact I don't own any hairdryer or straighteners, curlers etc at the moment but will invest if there are recommendations. Are there some serums, shampoos and conditioners, masks or other stuff that would work to smooth and tame my hair? What kind of routine should I be doing? I did ask on here before about skincare routine and I had lovely helpful comments and advice on products and now follow a routine a poster recommended and my face is looking lovely and feels so smooth and nice. Im hoping you lovely people can do the same with my hair. Thanks.

I have thick frizzy hair in its natural state. I use heads and shoulders shampoo (otherwise I get an itchy scalp) and then either kerastase or an organic moisturising conditioner which I leave on for at least five minutes (very important). Oil on the ends while wet - currently an organic one but have used a loreal oil, I dont think it matters. Blow dry in sections with a Parlux and then run GHD straighteners through it. It's not dead straight but that gets rid of the frizz and it stays nice for 3-4 days. Thick hair is great once you learn how to manage it.

Does your hair have any kind of kink in it? You could try the curly girl method. I’ve only just started but it seems the idea is to wash your hair with just a silicone free conditioner no shampoo) and scrunch with a curly girl friendly gel or mousse. My hairdresser recommended it as a way of turning my thick, frizzy, unruly hair into something more manageable. Apparently it works with wavy hair as well as curly

My hir is similar. I use kerastase discipline shampoo and mask and then kerastase oleo oil on it when it is wet. I have so many but this is the best for me.

I have braveheart hair if I don't do anything with it. Took me years of frustrating attempts to get it straight before I realised I could get it curly which is what I do no. I don't follow curly girl method absolutely but I do always condition after washing and leave for several minutes before rinsing. Then put a couple of pumps of oil through to smooth it and finish with a knuckle of curling cream. I'm currently using Cantu and I really like it. You get a really big tub for the money. I then dry it with a diffuser until it's not quite dry and let it air dry after that which controls the frizz. I can let it go a day or two and just refresh it with a spritz of water, a quick detangle with a wide comb (so not combing it as such, just losening it) and a knuckle of Cantu but I do wash and condition most mornings anyway because I like to. I only fully comb it when it has conditioner on and even then I do it in sections slowly and carefully.

It all sounds like a faff but it's the same as anything else in that once you've got a routine it's easy to stick to. I do it without thinking now.

Hey, thanks for all your ideas. my hair isn't curly but is definitely wavy. The shorter it is the more it seems to wave but I need the length to weigh it down.

This is my hair too. I lurk on curly girl method groups on Facebook and have learned a lot. I'm wavy not curly but think that this courser hair type is possibly more often found on people with very curly hair. I seem to get on with the products /method anyway! I find it much easier than straightening ever was

I can offer a really cheapskate way to do it... Wash, condition, air dry. Then take one part water, one part baby oil in a spray bottle. Shake really well to mix, and 4 to 6* sprays over your hair. Comb it through, marvel at the way your hair suddenly looks 3 sizes smaller. The only drawback is the faint baby smell for a bit.

*Maybe more, but make sure you're mixing it really thoroughly, shake between sprays - you don't want it separating again and spraying pure oil.

I have wavy/curly hair and find that the curly girl method works well for me. Try looking up ‘Sensible curly people uk’ on Facebook. The actual Curly Girl Method is quite strict and the people in here have mostly relaxed the rules to suit their hair. Great advice for taming waves.
I cowash (I don’t often use shampoo), I like AsIAm cowash and condition with Noughty conditioner (the Hellow Wave one). I squish it in with lots of water and rinse out. I then add some gel (favourite is Twisted Sista or Boucleme). There are lots of product recommendations to get you started on the FB group.

I use modified curly girl as well. Shampoo 1-2 times a week, no more of my hair gets too dry. Heavy conditioner (I like Bumble and Bumble coconut conditioner, but the Palmers ones are also pretty good, and much cheaper). Cantu Curl Activator and any cheap hair gel onto soaking wet hair afterwards, and air dry.

Thank you for all your advice, I have looked at curly girl and have decided that you are right it is better for me to enhance my wave rather than try to straighten as a daily hair style. I have bought some of the products recommended such as the bumble bumble conditioner, cantu curl activator and the mouse and actually booked a consultation with a hairdresser that I plan to use in future who recommended a serum to use when it's wet and an elixir thing to use when it's dry that she has got for me and will deliver tomorrow. I'm hoping it goes well. This is a photo of my hair, hopefully this will be one of the last times it's this frizzy ginger mess, roll on tomorrow and hopefully some lush waves, Thanks again guys, fingers crossed!

Your hair is very like mine, curly girl type method has really helped me have more good hair days.

Definitely wave /curl potential there! Good luck and update us with how you get on Smile
