Kiehls?

RedLollyYellow · 09/07/2021 12:16

I have been given a voucher, it's quite generous, I have never shopped at Kiehls before.

I'm mid 40s, white of Roma heritage so tend to tan easily have Botox every 6 months, and I'm considering other injectables. I look after my skin and, for a woman of my age, it's in good condition. Some enlarged pores, no breakouts, no discolouration or other concerns e.g. rosacea and no persistent dryness.

What should I spend my Kiehls voucher on?
What are the must-have products? And the ones to avoid?

I love midnight recovery concentrate to wake up looking better. The hand cream is brilliant. I also use the amino acid shampoo and sometimes the avocado eye cream. I have had the calendar a couple of times so I've basically tried it all!

RedLollyYellow · 09/07/2021 12:31

That's excellent, thank you Toastfiendish that's exactly the sort of advice that I need.

I've been eyeing up Midnight Recovery because I like using oils at night and the Avocado eye cream sounds good too. I'll hold my hands up and say that I don't use eye cream often enough.

How do you rate any of their SPF products?
What about any of their toners?

Also (anyone) is their clearly corrective dark spot solution any good?

Anoisagusaris · 09/07/2021 14:37

Midnight Recovery is fabulous. You feel good just using it.

Toastfiendish · 09/07/2021 16:04

I've had a sample of the clearly corrective but it didn't do much for my skin. I'm 33 so I'm not sure whether it's designed for my skin. I've never had the SPF but actually have been eying it up to try recently as I know I should use a proper SPF as well as my moisturizer. The only toner I've had as a sample is one which has bits in it and is botanical or something? I can't remember the name. That didn't do much for me.

equuscaballus · 09/07/2021 16:10

I can't be without the ultra cleanser.

Its just soap but its effective, unperfumed and mild. Nothing else does the job as well.

Avoid their moisturiser, it has loads of alcohol in and is generally dreadful.

RainbowCrayons · 09/07/2021 18:00

I have found the calendula moisturizer great for my skin which is prone to oiliness and acne. I also use the volumising shampoo and conditioner. The midnight recovery stuff is really nice but I tend to only use it in winter when my skin gets drier.

RedLollyYellow · 09/07/2021 20:27

Was it the calendula toner Toast?

Equus is that one particular moisturiser? Or have you tried lots?
That's helpful information about Ultra Cleanser.

You sound like you have younger skin Rainbow? I was eyeing up the calendula range earlier.

I love Kiehls! Use it on the vitamin C serum which is called something else: line reducing formula or something. Also try the Iris Activating lotion which you out on damp skin before the serums/moisturiser.

Toastfiendish · 09/07/2021 21:14

Yep have just looked it up, that's the one. Agree that I like line reducing concentrate. If you're able to get to a shop they have really good samples and I'm sure would give you a couple (they always give you two or three when you buy anything).

RedLollyYellow · 09/07/2021 23:23

Those are good tips LadyLinton I'm particularly intrigued by the Iris stuff.

We live in the back of beyond Toastfiendish so I could get to a Kiehls shop but it's tricky, which is a shame. That's the downside of living in the countryside Smile

Really, that's why I was asking for recommendations; because I can't easily get to a shop.

The vouchers are £££, I didn't ask for them but it's a thoughtful gift.

Go to the Selfridges website and put Kiehls into the search facility. The descriptions are very good and will help you decide what you like and/or need. Make a note of what you fancy and then you can go to Kiehls with the voucher. Alternatively, wait until October and pre-order the Kiehls Advent Calendar. I’m still using some of the products from last year’s.

RacheyCat · 10/07/2021 00:43

I really like their clay mask in the tub. I have their caffeine eye cream too, although it doesn't do much. I spend more in there on buying stuff for DH than myself.

dudsville · 10/07/2021 07:41

Over the years I've tried a lot of their stuff. As I've got older they no longer suit me but the last things I purchased were their shampoos and conditioners. Great products with gorgeous scents

Grognonne · 10/07/2021 08:23

The ultra cleanser made my skin very tight and dry (but I am prone to sensitive skin and dryness), and the midnight recovery didn’t do any thing for me, but it might be for older skin? The spf is amazing, just feels like regular moisturiser. The deodorant is good. The best is their ultimate strength hand cream. I buy about three at a time and leave in various rooms of the house. Their lip salve is also very good.

DedalusBloom · 10/07/2021 08:46

I thinks it's expensive for what it is. The midnight recovery is the standout for me.

I've got skin like yours OP and the iris essence did the square root of Jack shit. It's a pointless layer of faff.

LienD · 10/07/2021 08:51

The vitamin c serum en midnight recovery are great! Let a consultant advise you when you're at the store, they do a brilliant job.

PickleKing · 10/07/2021 11:17

I absolutely love their Ultra Light daily SPF 50. It's the only one I've tried that sits perfectly under my foundation. It's loved by make up artists apparently. It's so lightweight and non greasy, yet moisturising at the same time

RedLollyYellow · 11/07/2021 20:30

Thank you Pickle, it's a good SPF that I am really looking for.

Through years of trial and error I have found products that suit my skin and I've got everything else 🤷🏻‍♀️.

A really good SPF that doesn't pill or cause white streaks evades me Grin

SPF serums always seem to contain silicone, so they pill, especially under makeup.

I would love to find a good, fairly rich moisturiser with SPF but again, it seems impossible to find.

I'll try the Kiehls one because heck, I think I have tried all of the others.

Midnight recovery would be a good idea. It's my favourite so far, just looking around their site.

I like the look of the avocado products too.

LadyLynton the Selfridges tip is very helpful, as is the idea of waiting for the advent calendar, thank you. You've given me some great pointers.

Over the past few years I only use Michael Van Clarke hair products dudsville and I love them, so I'm reluctant to swap, unless Kiehls hair products don't contain silicone etc. I'll go through the ingredients lists.

It may be expensive DedalusBloom but this was a gift. I spend as much as I feel it needs on good products though I love a good, inexpensive product. Kiehls wasn't my choice, a friend was trying to give me money for something and I wouldn't take it, she knows that I am fastidious about skincare, so she put the voucher through my door and made a donation to charity of the same value: It was very kind of her, and unexpected too. I'm going to ask her what she buys from Kiehls. She may be able to advise.

My friend says that she still 'owes' me more she doesn't, as I am still helping her out. If she insists she will I will ask her for a voucher for a store selling a range of brands; Cult Beauty or similar, 50/50 with the charity donation as she has done before.

It will be a while before I can get to a Kiehls store LienD, I'm excited at the prospect of visiting Grin

I’d prolly go for washy stuff like shampoo and conditioners, or lip salves and sunscreens. The furthest I’d venture into skin ‘care’ would be a light daywear moisturiser (to layer over gutsier serums from other brands).

Fundamentally, they don’t have enough ‘actives’ in their products to really make any real difference to common face concerns (lines, breakouts, pigmentation, dullness, etc). You could buy products you like the smell or texture of, then drop in some boosters from Paula’s Choice or The Ordinary I guess?

Otherwise stock up on products for travel or household, when you’d be less likely to use actives (if you’re like me). I’m a fan of their packaging, and the traditional plant ingredients, but the amounts of proven modern hero ingredients is just too small for my skin. I want niacinamide, vitamins & acids, centella, in proven %.

It’s always fun to have a play though.

mamakoukla · 11/07/2021 21:30

The hand cream, as already recommended. Bought again and again.

I use the hair oil instead of hair products. No longer need to use hair conditioner since I stopped using mousse etc.

I like some of the facial moisturizers but change what I am using depending on the season.

Yes to the clay mask. Handy for softening dry patches, treating spots or just making blah skin a bit brighter

RainbowCrayons · 12/07/2021 03:54

@RedLollyYellow I don't know what I would class my skin as! I'm mid 30s and my acne is mostly hormonal. 3 weeks a month it's great but 1 week I end up with terrible spots all over my chin. However my forehead is quite dry and prone to wrinkles.

I did find a great offer a while back where if I spent a certain amount I got 6 mini products free to try out (minis rather than the usual sample sizes they give out) and I found several of the masks (masques? Rather than the covid variety! Grin) very good

StartupRepair · 12/07/2021 04:05

I love Midnight Recovery but it makes me break out sometimes. I'm 60 so I guess that makes me look more youthful!

Coachradley · 12/07/2021 11:29

The ultra facial cream is very popular. I love the ultra cleanser too. I have a travel Verizon of it and I was surprised at how nice it felt. The midnight recovery oil smells amazing. I’d probably get a discovery set so I could try a few of their products

Housewife2010 · 12/07/2021 15:24

Their Midnight Recovery Cleansing Oil is beautiful.
