Bobbi Brown...not impressed!

I had a mini makeover from Bobbi Brown yesterday which made me look worse than before they started and definitely older. So I didn't bother buying anything.

I had a Benefit makeover - my regular brand - the previous week which made me look great and I bought 3 things straight away and put another few on a mental wishlist.

Did I just get a bad assistant at Bobbi or is this range only for folk who look young and perfect in the first instance anyhow?

Oh how interesting- I've been dying to try Bobbi Brown because so many people rave about it. I'll be interested to see what people say!

sophierosie · 24/11/2007 15:53

oh no... I think you must have got a bad assistant - normally they are so good ime

I have always had great makeovers there.

Did she use cream concealer under your eyes and then powder? That looks awful on me as it just accentuated my wrinkles. The girls are too polite to admit it though.

Why did it make you look older, was it too dry for your skin?

I guess that the assistants make a huge difference. So now, there is only one Bobbi counter in my area, there are about 3 assistants but I can't go back and say I want a different assistant, can I?!!

The useless Benefit assistant in my local Boots suggested I buy spot cream for a 40th birthday present for my friend! When I tried to say how rude and insensitive that would be in the context of a glamourous present for her 40th, her response was to insist adamantly "well,if she needs it then it would be a good present". Luckily the other Benefit counters have lovely staff...

The colours looked orangey fake tanny on my pale skin - even though I expressed this reservation about the colours she selected beforehand, and they made me look tired yet over made up, although the assistant claimed that Bobbi Brown always aimed for a natural, no make up look. She said that I couldn't wear the pink colours I wanted to try as I have too much pink in my skin so I was willing to try her advice.

She used black eyeliner and mascara but I am blonde so it looked too harsh.

It was only eye make up that I had done and she took off the lemonaid base I had on and didn't use a Bobbi Brown base for the eyeshadow, just put it straight on.

Mainly the experience compared so incredibly badly with Benefit the previous week. Benefit scored 9/10 and Bobbi 0/10

god sounds crap

did you politely walk away hiding your orange face ?

hope you said it was shite

Blu · 24/11/2007 16:53

I have never dared have a makeover - am far too self-conscious and untamed raw material...but what smidgeon of make-up I do use is bobbi brown, and I like it for it's gentle natural colours and really long-lasting products.

Even I know that orange and all that black eye-liner sounds ott for a blonde!

Spidermama · 24/11/2007 16:59

PMSL @ 'untamed and raw material Blu. I know exactly what you mean.

There are probably products out there for 'problems' I never knew I had and I think I'd rather not know.

A friend once told me she'd been desperate for years to get me to exfoliate my knees FGS! Now I have to be self concious of my knees so heaven only knows what other part of my anatomy is glaringly hideious and unkempt to the tamed eye.

Spidermama · 24/11/2007 17:00

Ignore the extra 'i' in hideous please.

Blu · 24/11/2007 17:05

Oh, yes, beware the tamed eye!
Am worried now about who exfoliates their knees, and whether it is everyone except me and you....
Kneee exfolliator? Have I seen that in Superdug?
LOL

DarthVader · 24/11/2007 17:49

I was too cowardly and ashamed to say how crappy and old I looked in case she said something back about not being able to perform miracles! Being me it is half a miracle that I didn't buy something anyhow out of obligation!

I should have known by the make up the assistant was wearing which was quite like mine ended up! I don't even aspire to the tanned look, I am naturally pale and quite happy that way, which I did mention at the start. Come to think about it, I did say I liked her eyes but it was a polite lie to make her like me before she got started. So perhaps it is mainly my own fault. Sigh...

Note to self - NEVER under any circumstances ask someone to make you up when you don't rate the make up they chose for themselves. Should I really have told her it looked crap?

ggirl - what would you do to alleviate dark rings then as i agree foundation/concealer can accentuate wrinkles?

brimfull · 24/11/2007 17:57

well I usualy use cream to moisturise then touche eclat when the moisturiser has sunk in.

But I do find it sometimes looks too dry

BUT I have just bought bobbi brown's tinted balm herewhich is very moisturising so no need to put cream on first. So as I don't have really dark circles I just use that on it's own.It doesn't give masses of coverage but that suits me as I prefer the unmade up look.
You do need the powder to set it though.

Spidermama · 24/11/2007 19:11

IME make up experts in shops are always ridiculously over made up even when they're going for the natural look. They glow from behind their fragrant counters.

Blu my knees where like elephant knees aparently so I was given a special cream with hsarp, scratchy bits in it to scrape on in the shower. It left me with red, tender knees which were, quite frankly, no longer any good for kneeling.
