How to get rid of a full fringe

I currently have long wavy hair with a full fringe. I've had the same hair style for about 14 years and always loved it, but now I'm starting to get bored. I think about growing it out, but then it gets to that stage where it's poking in my eyes so I just trim it again

Posted that way too soon!

Ideally I would like the kind of style where you have a rough middle parting and then bits down the front to frame the face, but how do I get to there from where I am now? Do I just have to wait ages for it to grow out naturally? I've seen clip in things that would hide my fringe but I don't know if they look shit in real life

It’s a pain when it gets to that in between length, can you pin it back until it grows a bit more?

LazyMareofEastown · 06/07/2021 10:28

When I've grown mine out in the past I just let it part naturally in the middle as it grows to avoid it obscuring my vision and then, once long enough, style it to flick out like this picture.

This lasts for about 2 weeks before I realise I am not me without my full fringe and cut it back in 😆.

You just have to grit your teeth when it gets to the annoying length or clip it back. I started growing mine out in lockdown. It’s chin length now.

Golden2021 · 06/07/2021 10:31

Maybe try a side parting and a clip hidden under your hair at the side as a temporary measure, then you can do middle parting and have it hang. It wouldn't be for long.

Avelosa · 06/07/2021 10:31

@LawnFever stupidly I am really self conscious of my big forehead so I don't know if I'm brave enough to pin it back haha. I'm sure nobody would pay any attention but still

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow that's impressive! Was that since March last year? Mine does grow pretty quickly so hopefully mine won't take too long either

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 06/07/2021 10:34

No, since this year!

But it was long before then. In my eyes. It’s only grown from eye length to chin length!

I wish ld done it years ago, I look so much better. Younger even.

Maxmac · 06/07/2021 10:35

Side parting with fringe clipped to one side is what I had to do. I also have giant forehead and it took a while to get used to seeing it again!

RubyGoat · 06/07/2021 10:35

I grew a buzz cut out over lockdown. Real pain in the arse TBH, you just have to grit your teeth. Hats (sun or winter), clips, bands etc. Now it’s shoulder length & I can almost get all of it in a ponytail, just a few wisps at the front won’t quite reach.

Avelosa · 06/07/2021 10:35

@LazyMareofEastown that style is lovely and exactly the kind of thing I'm thinking, but I'm also concerned that I'll get to that point and then miss my fringe like you doGrin

@ArseInTheCoOpWindow mine is currently just above the level of my glasses so that gives me hope!

@Maxmac I've been looking at various styles to hide it, think I'm just going to have to do that and try and deal with the forehead. I guess it's not going anywhere or getting any smaller is itGrin

I was the same - wanted just a few strands to break up my forehead rather than the wide, straight fringe I had.

I started by just chopping roughly and vertically into the central part of it and left the sides alone. Kept doing this until the longer sides eventually grew to a length they could be incorporated into my style.

It doesn't look great for about three months [in my case] but it worked.

lollypoppi · 06/07/2021 11:19

U just need to persevere. Can you get side bangs while it grows out?

It took me years to grow mine out properly it was a side fringe. I'd get it even as long as my lips sometimes even closer to my chin and then cut it bk in. Is decide I don't suit not having one 🙈 I haven't had it for about 4 years now though.

I'm now fed up and I really do suit having something around my face more but I wear glasses sometimes (contacts some days) and it doesn't sit right. I really want side ones back like this:

Get it thinned out then create a smaller fringe while leaving the original fringe to grow out.

Nitgel · 06/07/2021 11:23

Like telling said

Happy36 · 06/07/2021 13:06

Get it thinned out regularly so it's more like face-framing (short, for now) wispy layers.

Have it cut into a curtain fringe if you want one. Then it will just grow progressively longer.

Lupinhere37 · 06/07/2021 13:38

I’m in the middle of this process. I just used the straighteners to curl the length under for a few weeks, to stop it going in my eyes.
Then (I know…..really poor of me) I cut either side diagonally to create an arch shape around my face.
I’m very pleased with my efforts and it still partially obscures my forehead. My hairdresser may think I should stick to my day job, howeverGrin I think it looks nice, as does my very critical teen.

Avelosa · 06/07/2021 16:38

@lollypoppi that's exactly the kind of style I'm hoping to achieve but feels like it's going to take forever

OP posts:
Avelosa · 06/07/2021 16:39

@TellingBone that sounds like a good idea! Might give that a try and if it looks horrendous I guess I can always get a wigGrin

I had a full fringe for years but during lockdown and no hairdressers my wavy hair got long and my fringe grew out. it was pretty awful when it was at that annoying stage but when I did finally get back into the salon my hairdresser cut in some curtain bangs (what she calls a Gringe or grown-out fringe). My hair parts very slightly off centre so I feel as if I have a bit of a messy, 1970s vibe going on Grin

I wouldn't go back to a full fringe again as I have a small forehead and this looks much better. It also looks pretty to have the loose bits when you wear your hair up. I urge you to stick with it through the painful stage.

TigersandTeddybears · 06/07/2021 18:27

There are lots of ways to disguise a fringe while it grow out. I love a scalp plait 'hair band', the 'twist and grip' and/or a nice headband or hair accessory, but you can get really creative. Then once it gets to a more manageable length you can start to have it integrated into your hair cut. I really like the flicks 70s dos too though, and those are really on trend so there's never better time to grow out a fridge really.
