If your hair needs washing every day but you don’t wash it every day

Yes I know I could just wash it but it’s long and thick and takes ages to dry and if I’m not doing much eg just around the house or out to the shops, I can’t be bothered every single day.

Sometimes I just wash the fringe and that gives me an extra day. I’ve tried scraping it back into a ponytail but it does not suit me at all.

I’m sure my hair has got greasier over the years. I never needed to wash it every day when I was young.

What do you do with your hair when you don’t want to wash it?

I use dry shampoo. Sprayed well into the roots and leave for a while before brushing through. My hair is in much better condition now as I am not washing so regularly.

4PawsGood · 02/07/2021 09:03

Same. Batiste all the way.

ButterflyBitch · 02/07/2021 09:06

My hair used to ‘need’ washing every other day as it got greasy. During the first lockdown I stretched it out to washing every 3 days. Now my hair only starts to get greasy on the third day. If you consistently only wash every other day then your hair should get the message.

namechange90832 · 02/07/2021 09:15

I used to think I needed to wash my hair every day, I started doing it every other day (just scraping it back the second day) now I can have 2 days with it down looking clean and scrape back the third day, I think over washing our hair does make it need more washing.

Whyarewehardofthinking · 02/07/2021 09:17

Dry shampoo; my hair is dyed so I'm very careful about not overwashing it and drying it out. I use it before bed and then a touch up in the morning; it seems to help it sit for a bit. I buy whichever colour suits my hair colour at the time to make it less obvious!

RubyGoat · 02/07/2021 09:24

My hair would probably look a lot better if I washed it daily but I don’t. Usually 2-3 times a week. I keep it tied up now it’s long enough, & don’t touch it. I don’t use dry shampoo as it makes my scalp hideously itchy & sore. And I wear a hat if I go out, always. It definitely needs less washing now than it used to.

Uptoongirl · 02/07/2021 16:38

Try spritzing it with water and giving it a blast with your hairdryer. if the front/roots are greasier add more water than say the ends where it doesn't need as much 'refreshing'.

Willowwarble · 02/07/2021 17:17

Dry shampoo, I spray it on, work it in and tie it up the night before and then brush it out the next morning which seems to stop the white residue

Rockitrosie · 02/07/2021 17:17

Batiste!

jasminoide · 02/07/2021 17:21

My hair never got the memo of supposedly regulating the amount of grease if you leave it longer between washes. I'm peri and used to be able to wash mine once per week, now it's like an oil slick on the second day Sad I just tie it up and ignore it until I can wash it, must try some dry shampoo to spare the nation.

MilduraS · 02/07/2021 17:35

Batiste user here too! I need less if I apply it to my roots in the evening rather than waiting until the morning.

Yafilthyanimal · 02/07/2021 17:39

Dry shampoo on the night before makes it fresh. I cant handle the greasy scalp if I dont do that. I was it every other day.

Sexlife · 02/07/2021 17:44

Dry shampoo makes my hair fall out. Sometimes I put talc in it, blonde! Otherwise, I just tie it back and ignore it.

Backthewaywecame · 02/07/2021 19:27

I will try the dry shampoo the night before as it can be hard to blend if you put it on straight before you go out.

Are you buying one that’s dark enough?
CimCardashian · 02/07/2021 19:53

Get the coloured dry shampoo.

This:

https://www.lush.com/uk/en/p/no-drought-dry-shampoo/115g

Is amazing!! I don't like the feel or smell of batiste or other canned dry shampoos. This one is like a chalky powder in a bottle, a little goes a very, very long way and it smells amazing! I've had mine for ages, use it every other day. I've found that on day two now my hair is a lot less greasy so I hardly use any of this. I think there's less oil in my hair since I switched to this shampoo:

https://www.faithinnature.co.uk/products/dragon-fruit-shampoo-400ml/finshampdrag400ml.aspx?productid=finshampdrag400ml

Makes your hair feel squeaky clean in the shower. I then use a mask from root to tip as per hairdressers instructions since having a lot of highlights put in. And I would say my hair is in better condition than it has been for years and years! And definitely less oily than when I use Pantene or herbal essences.

So now I can get two days of hair down and styled (straight or wavy). I used to be day one clean hair straight/wavy then day 2 I'd have to scrape back onto my head and avoid mirrors all day. I reckon I might try and stretch to 3 days when baby is born next month!!

Good luck Smile

Lucked · 02/07/2021 22:06

I have fair hair and if I know I can’t wash my hair the next day I rub talc into my roots, preferably before it gets greasy - I do this when travelling
or if I have a ridiculously early start.

I am interested in the lush product linked above as the sprays don’t work for me, I have a ton of fine hair so it practically takes a bottle to see an effect, it feels really wasteful to use and my hair feels disgusting all day.

Flippanty · 02/07/2021 22:09

Dry shampoo, hats, plaits, bun, ponytail, half up/half down, headscarves, curl with tongs. Any number of things! You could probably go at least 3 days without washing if you train your hair. The more you wash it, the quicker it gets greasy.

Re. ponytails - you might just have not found a style of ponytail that flatters you. Why do you feel it doesn’t suit you, is it your face shape?

4PawsGood · 03/07/2021 08:30

I will try the dry shampoo the night before as it can be hard to blend if you put it on straight before you go out.
Or, another thought, are you using too much/spraying too close to the hair? A quick ruffle should be enough to make it good enough for going out.
DixiePeach · 03/07/2021 08:43

If you’re going to try dry shampoo try colab overnight detox it’s in a navy can from Boots. It’s really good, I can go 3 days without hair wash. Definitely recommend it.

DocsOddSocks · 03/07/2021 09:00

@Backthewaywecame I'm not a fan of dry shampoo as it makes my scalp so itchy!! During the first lockdown, I shoved my hair into messy buns etc and can now get to 5 days before it needs a wash. I've found that if I sleep with it in plaits or do the dressing gown cord curls (google), my hair seems to last longer than when it's straight which it is naturally Smile

My hair will also not be 'trained' to need less washing. I tried plenty of times in lockdown.

Talc the roots
