How to tame long thick coarse hair? With styling or treatment?

My hairdresser makes it look smooth and thinner when it’s blow dried but I can never make it look like that. She does thin it out but it’s still thick and wavy. I now work in quite a smart place and go to lots of events (well pre Covid) and I realise it easily looks messy. Is there anything I can do to make it look a bit neater? Just get better at blow drying?!

I have similar hair and always had to put the tongs through it the night before an event. That made my hair a bit wavy but overall it would tone down the texture. I think you can also get a straightening perm?

L'Oreal no frizz serum and damp hair.

Blast it so it's nearly dry with a hairdryer then finish off with a Revlon One Step which is an absolute game changer.

Keratin treatment at the hair salon? Then use shampoo that is sulphate free? That helps for me.

ZaraW · 01/07/2021 18:47

L'Oréal steampod is great. Better than ceramic straighteners as there's less damage. I can go 5 days without washing my hair. Prefer it to keratin treatments.

Olaplex 3 is pricey but works wonders!

JudyMoonlight · 01/07/2021 21:26

Thanks for the suggestions. @peanutbutterandbananas how pricey is pricey? Also how long does it last?

It's just over £20 for a small bottle that lasts me about 6 - 8 uses, but it does really work! Wet your hair then put it on for c15 mins (or overnight), then rinse out and shampoo and condition as usual

JudyMoonlight · 01/07/2021 22:25

And do you need a special shampoo? Thanks for replying!

My thick hair looks much better when I use regular hot masks and an oil or serum for styling. Lots of them work well but the L’Oreal one mentioned upthread is excellent for about a tenner.

ceeveebee · 01/07/2021 22:28

Nanosmooth/keratin treatment. Expensive but lasts for 3-5 months

DukeofEarlGrey · 01/07/2021 22:28

Hair masks, not hot masks.

Me too!

I have the original ones and was wanted to treat myself to an upgrade - but oh my, have you seen the price now? I’m certain I paid half of that for mine!

They are the best thing I have. That and finally finding a hairdresser than knows how best to cut my hair.

AnyFucker · 01/07/2021 22:58

I agree the Revlon One Step is a gamechanger

Shmithecat2 · 01/07/2021 23:00

Brazilian blow dry. Expensive, but lasts approx 12 weeks. No straighteners needed, just a hairdryer. Its amazing.

JudyMoonlight · 02/07/2021 08:31

Thanks for all the ideas I will do some googling!
