Hi,

My wardrobe needs a bit of a shake-up and I've no idea of what suits me anymore. So, I've booked a session with a stylist based in John Lewis. I'm both looking forward to the session and terrified at the prospect of having this thing - I'm not sure why! It's my first time, I guess, and I'm not sure what to expect.

Do you have any tips for me?

If you are going to be trying on clothes wear good underwear.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Don’t waste valuable time trying on items selected for you that you absolutely know you don’t like . While you are trying on other stuff the stylist can nip off and select you more stuff .
Have fun 🤩 and report back.

Good point, @SpeckledyHen.

For example, if you never wear skirts, dresses, trousers or jackets that have no pockets, don't be persuaded into them.

If you're the sort who already has a pile of unworn clothes that need altering, don't get anything that needs altering.

You don't have to buy anything.

Get clothes for the life you live, not the one you'd like to live.

Check the side and rear view as well as the front.

I’d say be open to trying new things. Don’t expect the world, you may only get one outfit out if it. Take a handbag mirror so you can check the back view!

I really enjoyed this. She showed me where my waist is (thinnest part of me - just below bust) so was able to advise what dresses best suit (ones that are tightest on waistline) and what colours suit me. I'm not so floundering about in the dark looking for dresses any more. I'd love to go back and get workwear but out local John Lewis has closed.

Oooh, thanks! I'm looking forward to it.

Hi- lurker here.

I had a JL personal styling session recently, and took with me a couple of existing items of clothing I wear a lot in my “non-base” colour. My base colours are navy and charcoal, and I took a dark pink cardigan and a grass green blazer I love.

The stylist was able to select tops that went with those colours/items of clothing, as well as the basics it is easier to describe, and I came away closer to having a capsule wardrobe.

I went with my sister while she had one at John Lewis recently and it was fantastic. The woman knew exactly what she was doing, stuff we’d never have picked up on the shop floor actually looked great when she tried it on. I’d say go in with a totally open mind, and be really open to the suggestions they make. My sister had no idea really what suits her as she’s just not into clothes, but she came out with some great stuff and was enthusiastic to go back for another session.

I've done it a couple of times, and it's really good, but be conscious of your budget and what you really think something is worth. She found me lots of lovely things, and one top I really liked was (for me) very expensive. I still bought it, but actually now still feel I shouldn't have done so... just because something looks good, doesn't mean you have to have it, IYSWIM.
