Is this ok for a job interview?

I have this dress in black, do the sleeves look ok or too short?

It’s my first ever interview so I’m really nervous and want to at least be confident in what I’m wearing!

It looks a bit casual to me. What is the job? How 'formal' is the interview?

Crabwoman · 28/06/2021 13:10

How long is it on you? And what is the interview for ? That would be too informal for most interviews I have been to.

If it is longer, and if you can add smart shoes and a blazer it might be passable as long as its not a corporate job.

mistermagpie · 28/06/2021 13:11

Depends on the job. If you wanted my particular job then no, it's not appropriate at all, but if it's something in an industry that is more fashionable, modern or laid back then it might be fine.

4PawsGood · 28/06/2021 13:14

With smart shoes, bag and hair etc I think it’ll look good.

TooExtraImmatureCheddar · 28/06/2021 13:17

Is it in person or over Zoom/Teams?

Sickoffamilydrama · 28/06/2021 13:20

Agree with others it entirely depends on the role.

accentdusoleil · 28/06/2021 13:21

I would say it makes you look a bit young (without knowing you or the role )

Willwebebuyingnumber11 · 28/06/2021 13:23

Too casual IMO. I usually go for high waisted wide leg trousers, a small heel & a shirt / blouse.

thebattleofschrutefarms · 28/06/2021 13:26

Depends on the job. Would be fine for mine but too casual for others.
I prefer trousers and a shirt/blouse, don't think you can go wrong with that.

MalfunctioningRobot · 28/06/2021 13:33

Thanks everyone for your thoughts. I’m really short so it is longer on me than in that photo, around knee length.

It’s an in person interview, for a receptionist job at a manufacturing company. I might stick with black pants and a blouse type top, that was my second option.

Too casual . If you're asking about sleeves then I assume you're not wearing a jacket , a jacket might have saved it.
Yes sleeves are much too short .
Can you wear a blouse & trousers ?
A dress needs to be quite conservative if it's for an interview.

OneMoreForExtra · 28/06/2021 13:43

Def go with your second option. It looks very girly with the frilled cap sleeves and skirt flounces. You want to project competence. Good luck!

dudsville · 28/06/2021 20:51

Can you pop in and see what folks are wearing at that company? I agree with the PP that, for summer, and paired with a good bag and shoes and smart hair it could be a nice interview outfit. Most applicants will wear the safe black trousers... standout and be remembered in a good way!

Zparks · 28/06/2021 21:07

Second option is preferable, no question. That is not an interview dress! Good luck Star

MalfunctioningRobot · 28/06/2021 21:09

Thanks everyone. I didn’t want to feel too hot in a jacket/black trousers. I see what people mean though about it looking a bit summer school dress, I’m not sure if it’s the colour that makes it look that way though?

I couldn’t find the black on the website before but have attached a photo of the black version. I was planning on wearing suede loafer type shoes with it.

Definitely go safe with the black trousers option. Good luck!

EShellstrop · 28/06/2021 21:11

Always err for slightly too formal at interview, in my opinion. I definitely don't dress as formal in my job as I did during the interview process, but still wear 'work' clothes, just not the shirt/trousers/blazer combo.

AOwlAOwlAOwl · 28/06/2021 21:11

If it's knee length on you and you've got a nice jacket and shoes to go with it, I don't see why not. I get why people think it's too casual, but it's arguable that it is perfectly ok office wear.

catfunk · 28/06/2021 21:21

No sorry op it's not suitable

MalfunctioningRobot · 28/06/2021 21:32

I’ll stick with trousers and a smart top, thanks everyone for helping me out with this.

omgthepain · 28/06/2021 21:45

It's a lovely dress but I'd wear it with lovely sandals on holiday it's very casual but good luck for your interview

SpeckledyHen · 28/06/2021 22:32

Good luck 🤞 and let us know how you get on .

GoWalkabout · 28/06/2021 22:39

Wear whichever makes you feel most confident. Good luck.

grey12 · 29/06/2021 11:37

As a rule of thumb you should be too formal rather than too casual

Good luck!!! Thanks

StarlightLady · 29/06/2021 17:56

If I’m interviewing, although l notice what someone has on, unless someone turns up in a clown suit or dirty clothes, l pay little regard to what they are wearing. I’m more interested in what they have to say.
