Sweating during workout - shampoo daily?

NewToRenting · 24/06/2021 06:23

I used to have long layers that were easy to wash and let air dry. Couple of months ago, I got a disastrous haircut that I am trying to grow out. My hair is right now a bob - almost shoulder length at the back. Since I have a bit of a wave/ cowlick plus thinning hair at the top, it needs to be blow dried to look half decent. I used to wash hair twice a week, let it semi-dry and then give it a quick blow dry - 5 minutes tops.
Now that I am trying to do a short workout daily, I seem to sweat profusely on my face/ scalp, which means I have to shampoo daily (not a problem) and then blow dry daily (I really would rather not!)
Can I get away with not wetting/ washing hair daily? I worry that if I don't wash (or at least rinse) the sweaty hair, I will be reeking.
Any workaround, or do I have to just grit my teeth and wash and blow dry daily?

I wouldn’t be able to leave my hair unwashed after a workout personally. But blow drying your hair everyday won’t be good for it either. Could you leave it to dry naturally and then do a sort of half up/half down hairstyle with a clip to hide the thinning on top and give it a bit of oompf? Or could you do fewer workouts but make them longer so you’re not needing to wash everyday?

I have the same issue. I only wash my hair 2x a week & exercise 3 x/4x a week. I'm planning my workouts around my hair, it's ridiculous.

lazylinguist · 24/06/2021 07:28

I sweat a lot from my scalp too. There's no way I would leave my hair unwashed after a workout, and I'm a bit of a slattern! I wash my hair every day anyway though, so it doesn't make any difference to me.

Salanda · 24/06/2021 07:50

I exercise every day so I’ve just made peace with washing my hair every day. I just let it air dry though most of the time though so it doesn’t cause any problems really. Have you tried different ways of air drying it? I let mine dry a bit and then put in a bun to get loose waves - although yours might not be long enough for that. Alternatively I put some salt spray in and scrunch it for messy waves - there might be more you can do to get it to air dry nicely?

LawnFever · 24/06/2021 07:52

I always wash my hair after a workout, could you get away with letting it dry naturally rather than blow drying every time?

EmmaStone · 24/06/2021 08:10

I workout most days and wash my hair every other day (unless it's been a REALLY sweaty workout). Could you use dry shampoo and/or wear it up? Headbands?

WhereAreWeNow · 24/06/2021 19:54

I've been using L'Oréal conditioning shampoo. It doesn't lather at all. It's basically co washing (conditioner only). It's enough to remove the sweat and freshen up but without stripping the hair of natural oils/colour. www.superdrug.com/Hair-Care/L%27Oreal-Elvive-Colour-Protect-Low-Shampoo-400ml/p/721926?gclid=Cj0KCQjw2tCGBhCLARIsABJGmZ54tMHYxYgmY0i1lfd5eZfZMwmOZ3HTFOYV9joPk0fWDbK5QzzA0KoaAvuUEALw_wcB&gclsrc=aw.ds

I wash with normal shampoo and conditioner once a week but the rest of the time I just use this. Saves time too as you don't need conditioner.

HiHoSylvie · 24/06/2021 21:13

It is ridiculous isn't it? I currently do two proper workouts a week (with PT) and there is no way I could not wash my hair after. I want to start running again, so that will be another two sweaty workouts. I can live with 4 X washes a week, but any more than that and my hair will be a bit damaged I think. My shaved headed DH doesn't have this problem! Maybe that's the answer Wink

I wear a headband which keeps my hair off my face and also absorbs some sweat. Sometimes I wash just the hair around my hairline.
A colleague has recommended using a hairdryer on a cool setting to dry the sweat - I haven't tried it but she says it works.

JaninaDuszejko · 24/06/2021 22:15

I swim and wash my hair everyday. I towel dry it (you can get those little microcloth hair wraps that work well) and it sometimes gets a bit of a blast with the hairdryer in the winter. Doesn't take long, I never really understand why people think washing their hair is such a big job it can't be done ever day.

AlGorithim · 24/06/2021 22:27

I have very long, thick hair which needs drying/styling and this has been an issue for me too. I usually wash it every other day.

I have got around it by always tying it back in a low ponytail or knot then undoing it as soon as I’ve finished to dry out. You don’t need to wash your hair after every workout unless you’re absolutely smashing it and sweating a LOT.

Because my hair takes 14 - 20 hours to dry. People are different.
HiHoSylvie · 24/06/2021 22:48

My hair dries ok on its own and very quickly. But, I don't want to wash it too much, as I find it damages my hair.

JaninaDuszejko · 25/06/2021 07:09

If my hair took 20 hours to dry I'd cut it short to free up time. People are different.

Neeko · 25/06/2021 07:47

I've read that taking sea kelp tablets can really help with thinning hair and strengthening hair generally. It won't help with the washing frequency but might be worth a try to limit the damage. (I haven't tried these myself yet.)
Could you manage without washing by using dry shampoo before exercise and wear your hair up for the rest of the day? I have to wash mine after exercise but I know people who do the dry shampoo thing.

Kintsugi16 · 25/06/2021 07:49

Some sort of workout each day
Wash hair once a week 🤷‍♀️

Ha! I did say up thread that my DH doesn't have this problem as he shaves his head. Seems a little extreme though and I feel I'd look like Uncle Fester & Matt Lucas's love child.

Sorry only just managed to check back in....so many replies, thank you!
Problem isn't washing daily, problem is blow drying daily - I am really bad at it, and just barely manage to make it look half decent.
With my awkward hair while I grow it out, air drying looks really really bad. Hair is too short to tie up, without straggly bits sticking out at the nape - and a ponytail highlights the balding patches at the temple.
The more I write, the more I realize that the real issue is that I only know one way to style my hair (and not too well at that!). Next time I wash, I'll air dry and post a picture. Maybe I could get suggestions for air drying but looking stylish!

I'm going to have to start washing mine daily , hot weather and sweaty little menopausal head in PPE hat is too much

My hair is shoulderlength so fine to tie up and I don;t even own a hairdryer (DD has one if I need it)

But my hair is greying so I might try shampoo/condition one day then maybe 1-2 days conditioner only otherwise I think it'll rebel.
At the moment it's 2xweek

jakalaka · 25/06/2021 22:49

Good job, JaninaDuszejko. Well done on washing your hair every day. You're doing amazing, sweetie.

Hopeislost · 26/06/2021 09:58

I sweat a lot so I have to wash my hair every time I workout. And my hair needs blow-drying too! So I've learnt a few new hairstyles from watching YouTube videos. My favourite at the moment is a plait across the front of my hair - I stick the rest in a pony and it looks 'done'.

slightlysnippy · 26/06/2021 10:23

I feel your pain OP, I went from long hair to short Bob 6 months before lockdown, and oh my was so much effort, needed to blow dry and straighten or curl every morning to have it look half decent.

If I sweat during a workout I need to wash my hair.

Can you buy decent straighteners the make living with a bob easier?

You must have serious comprehension problems if you can't understand that people have different hair types.

I have thick frizzy hair, and a lot of it. I wash it 3 times a week and it's a total faff to get it dry, usually sticks out everywhere and is usually better the day after I have slept on it.

My best friend has fine straight hair that dries completely fine 30 mins after she washes it.

NewToRenting · 26/06/2021 16:28

Sea kelp tablets - great idea, will get some. Straightening iron, yes I do own a pretty good one, but though my hair is thinning at the top, I have a lot of it at the bottom, bits of it stubbornly wavy - even a salon straightening doesn't last more than a couple of hours. I blow dry it turning it in at the bottom - it's probably really dated but seems to work for me.
Will post a pic soon, maybe you will all tell me that shaving it all off is the only answer Wink
