Philips Lumea/braun IPL - do they work?

I am verrrrrrrrrry tempted by one of these since they are both reduced on Amazon at the moment. But, do they work? I have dark blonde hair and pale skin. Does it work on the chin hairs that seem to be appearing daily? Confused

I have a Babyliss IPL. It has significantly reduced my hair but it's not 100%. It's most effective on my legs, smaller areas are tricky to do and the result has been less dramatic but still visible. My machine was only £25 so a bargain when considering the results.

catfunk · 22/06/2021 23:18

I'm really pleased with mine

Twoforthree · 22/06/2021 23:19

Yes but I think it works best on dark hairs.

MarkRuffaloCrumble · 22/06/2021 23:21

Worked wonders for me but I have dark hair and olive skin. Used it about 4/5 times on my chin hair and it’s been gone for years. So relieved.

roses2 · 22/06/2021 23:21

I've got a Lumea and dark hair. It did wonders for my chin!

Shinyrainbows · 22/06/2021 23:22

Phillips Lumea does work. It does take quite a bit of effort in the beginning but it’s definitely worth it & really works. I have an app to remind me when the next treatment is due. Legs take ages but practically hair free now after a couple of years.

Shinyrainbows · 22/06/2021 23:23

It is recommended for dark hair though.

I suggest that you do a search to find the other threads on this. Watch out - some people develop folliculitis (infection in hair follicles) with this so maybe trial it a couple of times on a discreet area before using more widely. Also don’t think works as well with blind hair.

EvelynBeatrice · 23/06/2021 13:42

Blond hair, not blind!

My Lumea Prestige has changed my life (previously very coarse, fast growing hair to now next to nothing after 6 months use) but I have dark hair and pale skin which is the optimal target group so not sure how it would work for fairer hair.

Selkiesarereal · 23/06/2021 21:14

Absolutely love my Lumea! Was not expecting such great results on my legs. Strangely one under arm is completely clear and the other not as good.
Moustache is a lot better but taking longer to sort than the chin.
Totally worth the effort to be able to just go bare legs in summer without stubble.

BigButtons · 23/06/2021 21:26

How do they work for peach fuzz on face? After years using an epilator my leg and underarm hairs are pretty sparse. I would be interested in sorting out the increasing hairy-ness of my chin/ lip and lower cheek area though.

PerciphonePuma · 23/06/2021 22:49

Can I ask an oddly tmi question?! Is there anyone who has naturally light blonde hair but has hair in certain 'places' that is much darker and has found IPL to actually work in those areas, please? Grin

megletthesecond · 23/06/2021 22:53

It's worth it-ish.
I've been using my Lumea every two weeks for six months and hair still grows through. It has slowed it down though and I have bald patches.
I'd been waxing for 30 years and think my hair is just too strong to be killed off. The post laser itching is terrible too, it's kept me awake at night and really got me down tbh.

I hope its really worked this time next year. It's a very long term commitment.

I bought the Lumea Prestige about a month ago. Early days, but particularly noticed a huge difference under my arms and legs. I have dark course hair and pale skin. Used to have to shave daily, now maybe once a week. I also have a lot of hair on my upper lip and neck. Haven't noticed a huge difference there as of yet, but might take a little longer not really sure

BippityBoppity87 · 23/06/2021 22:56

coarse*

Completely agree. It has been life changing for me. I don't use on chin area but do my whole legs and bikini area but it's no good on my underarms, no idea why. Mine was from Costco. I accidentally bought the corded Lumea which on reading reviews afterwards is the best one as although the wire can be annoying apparently the cordless ones can stop charging after a while if not used but you might want to investigate this!
snowdropsandcrocuses · 24/06/2021 01:51

It has been life changing for me too. I was plucking chin/neck hairs daily and after fairly inconsistent use I have reduced this massively. I have top lip, chin, neck and even the odd cheek hairs, dark and course. The hairs were destroying my neck skin leaving me red, lumpy and stubbly. It is important to know it hasn't 'cured' it. I am still getting hairs and unfortunately as I age those hairs are greying which is a problem as the Lumea will not do anything for white hairs. However my confidence has rocketed and I cannot express how happy I am with my smoother skin.

I have also used it on my legs but with no consistency. It takes a long time to do full legs and I don't always have time to devote. However my leg hair responded really well and the hairs that grow now are very patchy, even after maybe three uses of the Lumea.

As long as you go into this hoping for an improvement but not a cure, it is worth every Penny in my eyes.

The hair on my head has gone grey/white but my body hair is still dark so IPL works. You need a contrast between hair colour and skin colour in the area being treated for good results.
