Help with my mum's thinning hair!

My mum is in her early eighties and her grey hair is very fine and thinning. Her hairline has receded and she has an almost bald patch on top. She's very self conscious about this. She doesn't want to wear a wig.

Any suggestions of what she can do to disguise this? I've suggested a hair piece but there's not much to attach it to, as her hair is so fine. Also suggested a head scarf hair band, but she worries it's too young a look for her.

My guess is it's male pattern baldness, as it's not breaking off or coming out in clumps.

She has always worn her hair short.

Any suggestions very welcome, as she's really quite upset about it. Thanks Smile

@QueenBee52 ok thanks.

Did you have any more legs finding something @Cantstandtherainydays

3Britnee · 22/06/2021 19:37

Luck!

I've ordered this hair piece in a darker grey from Simply Wigs.

We have to wait 2 to 3 weeks for delivery though. Fingers crossed it'll be ok! It clips on to her own hair, I'm not really sure if that'll work but hope so.

Yes that looks nice.

Cantstandtherainydays · 22/06/2021 22:31

It's got a similar curl to her hair, so I hope it'll match ok.

That looks like a good solution. It might also be worth using a caffeine shampoo to try to restimulate her own hair growth too.

Cantstandtherainydays · 23/06/2021 11:06

I'll post a photo when it arrives Smile

I suggested caffeine shampoo, but she thinks it won't help because where she's no hair out won't grow because there's nothing there at all?

Cantstandrainydays I have ordered that hairpiece before and it is very nice, but they don't do it in my colour,[blonde] only a golden blonde, too dark for me,
Toppix is ok if you have some hair for it to stick to, but no good for bald patches

3Britnee · 23/06/2021 13:40

How are the clip on ones? Are they comfortable, do they move, are they easy to put on?

FridayFeeling21 · 23/06/2021 13:46

My 75 year old mum has a hairline pretty much on top of her head and her hair is whispy. It was very distressing for her as she's quite trendy and dresses youthfully and had choppy copper highlights. Her hairdresser helped her out. It's still coppery highlights etc now probably chin level but short up the back and she styles it so it's a little brushed forward but more like a fringe not a comb over. It's very clever, maybe as I'm used to seeing her but you don't notice the hairline much at all. It's not hiding the receeding hairline but just styled around. So my advice was to see if a hairdresser can make some styling suggestions.

She tried clip on hairpieces and those were okay but she didn't persevere with them.

What about Rogaine or the generic versions of it? That is actually shown to regrow hair - proper testing has shown this. I understand that it takes months but can in most people regrow some hair. This site gives what seems a fair summary of what you could expect with it: www.health.harvard.edu/staying-healthy/treating-female-pattern-hair-loss.

The other thing that I have personally experienced is thinning when I was iron deficient. My hair grew back when I took iron supplements and made a concerted effort to eat red meat.

Thanks all for the helpful information. I'll look into Regain. Unfortunately she always goes to the same hairdresser. I've suggested she have it cut really short, but she insists on having a long fringe to hide her baldness, but it doesn't Sad

aww bless her.. she sounds very precious .. I hope this topper comes soon and she enjoys it 🌸

People over 65 are not supposed to use Regaine, but only because it hasn't been tested on them
I use it and over 65, cheaper on Amazon or Ebay, but not worked on me yet, still hoping,as it can take months
I have had no side effects

Cantstandtherainydays · 23/06/2021 23:28

Thanks princess, just saw that too. I think I'll struggle to persuade her to use it, but will mention it to her.

Honestly nanogen keratin hair fibres really work! My husband was very sceptical, but he did this on our wedding day and it's so weird how they staticly attach to whatever little hair is left. No one knew it was fake.

Worth looking at YouTube? We also had fun in the pub shaking them over our arms!

cathyandclare · 24/06/2021 09:11

Was coming on to suggest minoxidil/regaine- it's licensed for androgenic alopecia in women and men. My DH started losing his hair at 19. he started minoxidil at about 25 and it noticeably thickened up and slowed down hair loss. i'd say it was pretty effective for about 25 years before time and genetics caught up with him!

It doesn't make hair grow on totally bald bits, but it makes wispy and bay hairs much thicker IME.

ppeatfruit · 24/06/2021 09:37

I use a specific massage to help the blood supply to the scalp. It does work, thickening my hair very well, Mum's not totally bald but thinning a bit, she's 92 and it helps her hair grow also thicken.

Place your fingertips either side of your centre parting and gently move the scalp backwards and forwards, not the hair. Do the same round the side.

I do it 4 or 5 times every morning and evening.

Cantstandtherainydays · 24/06/2021 21:41

Thanks.

What's the difference between Nanogen and Toppik?
