What do stylish people wear on the school run?

I've got a new job and can now do school drop offs and pick ups Smile

After years of pregnancy/toddlers/wearing uniform to work I'm feeling hopelessly out of fashion.

I've definitely missed the veja trainers and wide legged dungarees memo that the other school run mums seem to have received.

Obviously it doesn't really matter but...I would like to fit in more! So, how do stylish people dress on the school run where you are?

I commented on someone's post-lockdown school run thread a few weeks back - loads of snidey comments on there too. As if it's really hard to imagine that after being stuck at home for months someone was after a few ideas on how to make a bit more effort - even if their only reason for leaving the house was the school run. If you feel like shit about your style then comments like "where what you normally wear" aren't exactly helpful.

I can totally relate to that lost post-babies/new body/new life feeling. I want to wear what I wore in my 20s when I was all willowy but unfortunately most of the stuff I wore then doesn't suit me now I have flab, so yes I'm going to look around me at people roughly my age for ideas about what would/could help me not look quite so crap. And yes, most days the only adults I see during my day are on the school run.

Snort laugh at "no. One. Cares." being mental health support from Maisie. I'm sure your intentions were good, but don't give up the day job to take up a role supporting people's mental health will you?

Anyway, yes, this was a good natured thread with some debate until it went...weird.

I'm glad you started it op though. Maybe we can talk about casual clothes which also look stylish now, which you have clarified is what you meant, using school run of an example of what you'd do in said clothes.

For clarity picks up megaphone: we know you don't care about what anyone wears on the school run. Well done you. You don't need to say it again. (For any smarty pants late comers who think they're being original).

You've been very gracious on this thread OP. Sometimes I really think S&B threads should not appear in Active threads ffs. It seems super clear to me that the op is asking for suggestions of what to wear for a change in her daily lifestyle.

Anyway sorry I can't actually help, as I only have a DC at nursery and also I live in Sweaty Betty central, but if I were you I'd enjoy people watching for a bit and then come back on here and ask for ideas of where to buy specific items like jeans, sandals, dresses etc.

I would think a good starting point would be jeans if you wear them. White / ecru jeans are having a moment although possibly not great with little kids around. I’m not going to invest heavily in that trend but wanted to give it a go so I got these jeans. They’re higher waist and slightly cropped. I spent a bit more on an indigo pair with a similar look from Kin at JL. If that’s not your bag then there are so many styles around that aren’t skinny it’s worth a try on. I wear with these linen shirts which are slightly cropped. Shoe wise I’m stalking a pair of new chunky Cos sandals on eBay but wear 2 strap Birkenstock’s in the meantime or trainers.

The white shirt is lovely, Divebar. Is that Cos?

@thecatfromjapan

I wear a lot of Cos but that shirt is H&M. ( as is the black). It’s a great shape and not too short. ( it’s current season)

I think Divebar might be my new style crush Smile

Is it just me who can't wear these boxy style shirts and tops? They hang off my boobs and make me look hugely wide from front to back and side to side, like a massive marquee!

I don't really suit boxy shirts tbh, although it can depend on length as well. I'm not a crop top kind of person, but actually, I do suit shorter tops if they are boxy. If they're a bit longer I look like a walking yurt.

I do love that style on other people though and love @Divebar2021's style!

Always find it amusing that people march onto this Style & Beauty forum to declare they have zero interest in clothes. Do they also march onto Pets Corner and announce they are oblivious to all animals? I mean, why? Why?

I love clothes and one of my pleasures is choosing my outfit for the day ahead 😊😊😊

I think op is interested in the ones who actually are stylish, as that's what she asked.

Exactly. Everyone competing to care the least of all, 🥇🥇🥇

Did I miss the memo? Is there some lofty, moral high ground where all the badly dressed people are gathered?

Ooh thanks for the nice comments @SpinbikeNotebook and @Flosime - high praise indeed. I think I feel a bit defensive about some of these snidey comments. I’ve really found S&B a great source of support and information over the lockdown. I’ve totally re-vamped my skincare routine and haircare, I’ve bought bloody dresses I wasn’t planning to buy and shared some of my outfits on the Plus Size thread. I’ve also found myself googling for outfits for some strangers events when I’m supposed to be working. Smile I can definitely remember feeling a bit lost style wise and I can sympathise when people are in that place. I shall continue to frequent the board and hope normal service can be resumed soon.

@Divebar2021 I feel exactly the same. This is actually v similar to those ones who post on the skincare threads saying you're wasting your money, just use soap and a brillo pad 😂

Op I'm no fashionista but I wore this t shirt dress, cropped leggings and this trench with leather trainers today.

I'm slightly overweight so need comfort as I can't squeeze myself into jeans.

Love the trench. I gave up on H&M a few years ago but what with Divebar's linen shirt and now that coat, I may need to give them another go.

Gym wear because 99% of the time I'm going to work straight away and it's what I work in. If not a dress and air and grace trainers or chunky black sandals, maybe jeans with a white t shirt and slouchy blazer or my fave denim dungarees and trainers and white t shirt.

Most mums are wearing gym wear (even those that plainly have never been near a gym), jeans and t shirt or smart work clothes (those going straight to an office job). Some wear White Stiff style things, some grungy almost goth type stuff (younger age group).

It's a whole mixture. Find what suits you and you feel comfy in and stick to it regardless of what others are wearing.

HUGE EYEROLL at the pointless and try hard 'no one cares' comments.

Perhaps a forum dedicated solely to discussions about Style & Beauty isn't for you Confused

Probably the same people that reply just "Google it"
The discussion is the point, sometimes it's for pleasure rather than just trying to get hard factual answers, sometimes I feel you get a lot more from a discussion as you get a range of ideas and things you haven't thought of.... Hopefully I'm not alone in thinking this!

Some mums at our village school clearly get up around 5am to get ready for the school run! I couldn’t contemplate contouring and multiple eye shadow applications before noon …
